TL; DR - Selso, the lead tour guide, made numerous sexual comments to the college students on a trip that I was chaperoning. He made many of the female students uncomfortable with his conversation and by physically touching them. He made the male students uncomfortable by asking…

Response from Lida H, Gerente at Machu Picchu 2 días y 1 noche

We are most distressed to see this terrible review in response to our services regarding this group. As a result of this, we have completely reorganized our company and services. Most admittedly, the actions described above are not acceptable. Eco Tour Cusco has been in business for 25 years, and never have we had such a bad review, and it has required that we look very closely at what our group participants are experiencing. Our focus in the past has been on tours for people from Latin American countries, and we are now branching out into some the other global markets. We have spoken at length with the guides who accompanied this group, and communicated directly with the author of this review. Many of the issues itemized above are a result of cultural misunderstandings. People in Peru are much more “touchy feely” – we kiss each other hello and good-bye. Personal space is not perceived the same, and non-traditional sexual orientations are not well tolerated – it is true that typically Latin American countries are guilty of this, and perhaps even the sense of what was considered to be humor may have been misunderstood. We are not excusing any inappropriate behaviors in regards to innuendos. We have put together a training program for guides that are now working with us that require that they be much more sensitive to the culture differences with non-Latin American cultures. Unfortunately, several of the items mentioned are all too common in Peru. Peru is a developing country, and standards are sometimes quite different from what people expect in first-world countries. As an example, tap water is typically not potable. Bottled water in every restaurant in Peru, comes at an additional cost. Trying to keep to a timetable does often require that some people feel rushed. Machu Picchu and Peru have become extremely popular as a destination, the lines for buses and entries are long (think Disney World) and some of our visiting tourists find the altitude, multitudinous staircases, and bacteria to which they are not accustomed compromise their health. We are now making it a priority to ensure that travelers who are not accustomed to being in a developing country are aware of these potential difficulties and that our guides are extremely cautious with these issues and to be much more sensitive to the cultural differences and expectations. We have offered our apologies for any misunderstandings or inappropriate actions, and we determine to make sure that this situation never happens again. Sincerely, Lida Huallpamaita. Manager, Eco Tour Cusco.
We were a group of four Australian who were planning a 13 day tour of the main tourist sites in Peru and Bolivia. Our local travel agent did some research and identified Eco Tour Cusco as the best company to deal with and what they arranged more than met our expectations. We…
