Excellent Day Trip
Nov 2019
We chose this 6 hour wine tour primarily because it advertised it was tailored to fit in with the cruise ship timetable. Firstly we were pleased to see we were in a 10 seater van so we knew to expect a more intimate tour than on a large coach. From the pick up at the Picton I centre until our timely return, we were treated to a wonderful informative tour of 6 wineries including boutique wineries, tasting up to 30wines where we had personalised talks by winery staff. While driving between them, our tour operator Chris added more interesting information about the region. Lunch was not included in the price but Chris had made a table reservation at Alan Scott Winery with ample time to enjoy our own choice of food.
While we were on a strict time frame, Chris still managed to squeeze in a quick visit to a chocolate factory, and when we asked about buying bottled water before our imminent return to the ship, Chris kindly made a brief stop at a local shop for us.
Thank you Chris for an excellent day.

Once again we have had a wonderful wine tour with Chris & Bill. The wineries were great and Chris's commentary was very knowledgeable. This is our 3rd tour with Chris and we highly recommend this excellent company. Geoff & Kim Valentine

Excellent Private Wine Tour with Chris
Jan 2019 • Couples
After much emailing back and forth with Chris, we booked a private wine tour for 4 for a port stop on our cruise. Chris met us exactly where and when directed and whisked us off in his comfortable van to tour 5 wineries. I had discussed previously that we were mostly red wine drinkers and he taylored the tour to accommodate, but I must admit to being converts to some of the whites which we were also introduced to as well. Each small winery visited was expecting and ready for us. We got detailed background about the wineries from Chris prior to arrival and additional information from each winery tasting room. Midway through our day we stopped for a delicious gourmet lunch (Chris sent me a web link prior to be assured we'd like the selections available there). We paid a flat per hour fee for Chris's time and transportation and additional charges for tastings where applicable (no charge at ones which we ordered wine) and for lunch. All was explained up front prior to booking. At the end of our very enjoyable tour, Chris processed our credit card payment and we sadly parted ways. It was a seamless progression from start to finish, and I would highly recommend Na Clachan Wine Tours.

Hi Kathleen, thanks for taking the time to write your extremely detailed review including me taking payment! I really enjoyed your company on the tour and your willingness to explore the white wines of the Marlborough region as well as the red wines. I hope all the wines you ordered arrive in good time and they bring back great memories of your day out in Marlborough. Thank you for choosing Na Clachan Wine Tours. Regards Chris

A bit of a disappointment - very mediocre
Jan 2019 • Couples
We booked this shore excursion because we have gone on wine tastings throughout California, France, and Spain and enjoy tasting good wines and learning about the regions. This tour offered 5 wine tastings for their shore excursion and said it would not be more than 11 people in the van. We expected to pay for lunch. Not a problem. They were timely, very friendly and did take us into 5 areas. It was a fast assembly line of tastings in each place. Very little information. Very cheap wines. Thank goodness we didn’t care for the wines enough to purchase any because there just wasn’t the time anywhere. We had between 15-20 minutes in each place except the one where we ate lunch. Each place herded groups in and out and offered 4-5 wines. How much time would you expect to be given to taste 5 wines and have any sort of discussion with the winery staff? That 20 minutes included loading in and out of the van and walking to the tables. At several places, I asked to pay extra for upgraded wines. Only one allowed it and their better wines were definitely worth the taste. The wines offered for the standard tasting (which we found out was only 5 NZ $ per site) were not good. Hardly any of the 12 people on our tour finished the less than 2 oz. tasting.
Our guide was friendly. He did the basics, no more. He didn’t seem to know much more. So sad. Traveling from the USA, I would have loved to be able to purchase a tour that may have costed more, gone to less wineries but served their better wines. If you agree, please think twice before going with this company and Phil.

Thank you for your review. I take customer reviews and service very seriously and I feel your review needs a very detailed reply. Before writing the reply I have spoken to Phil (Tour Guide) and a number of cellar door representatives to verify the factual details below. To comment on the issues raised; 1. 12 instead of 11: You are correct in this instance we did have 12 on the Van. Unfortunately one couple in the tour group had booked a tour incompatible with the cruise ship times. We have changed the tour description to stop this from happening in the future. I made the decision as our Minibus is licensed for 13 that in this one instance we would take 12 passengers so the customers who booked the incorrect tour would not be left without a tour. 2. Cost of the tour: You make the observation that you wished you had paid more for a tour and received better wines: All the tour companies receive the same wines at the wineries visited so with respect, I think this part of your comments is misguided. If you had wanted a more tailored tour to your needs we also offer Private Tours which are discussed with clients and planned in advance and maybe this would have been better for you as you could have paid for the small parcel wine tastings offered at a few select wineries. 3. Times at each winery: You mention we took 15-20 minutes at each winery including getting on and off the minibus, and visited 5 wineries that tasted 4 or 5 wines at each: If this were the case your tour would have lasted much less than the 6 hours you were on tour for. The times allocated at the wineries were in chronological order; 45 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 90 minutes for lunch and tasting, and 35 minutes all confirmed by cellar door bookings. Within the tour there was also travel time allocated between wineries. These times are all based on our past experience of the wineries we visited and also in line with the time each winery has asked for. 4. Wines and information at each winery: All the wineries visited on the day have multiple tiers of wines. Marlborough is world renowned for quality wines. It is not in the interest of the wineries to serve you “very cheap wines” as this creates the wrong impression of Marlborough and us. Not one of the wineries served you any non-estate quality wines. We state that all ‘Standard tasting charges’ are included in the tour and we leave the choice to the wineries as to how they decide the wines they serve on the day. Some of the wineries vary their tasting by the day but most have a standard set of wines they taste day in day out and previous customers have commented favourably on their quality compared to the wines they get at home. I guarantee that you were served many award winning wines on your tour including the most widely requested white wine by the glass in the USA according to that particular winery. Having spoken to one of the wineries you were served a single vineyard Pinot Noir and their Reserve (best) Sauvignon Blanc, one of the most awarded Sauvignon Blanc wines in the region. At another winery they have 3 tiers of wine and a few vintage wines. That particular winery served their highest tier of wines but not the small parcel vintage wines. At another winery they added a bubbles to the tasting even though that is not normally tasted. I agree it was not the reserve but they never taste that due to very small stock levels. With regards information given at wineries, again I have spoken to a number of them. All confirmed to me that they gave a history and background to the winery and presented each wine to you giving information about the wine. 5. Phil our driver: Phil is very diligent in what he does and wants to ensure a good experience is had by all. During the tour he gave you information on the history of the region and the varieties planted and their relative production as well as talking about the region in general. Before arrival at each winery he introduced the winery with regards to relative size and what you would be tasting. During the tour he took you into a small winery and talked about production and at another talked about the production through the glass window at the back of the cellar door. He also talked about the different soils in the region, the fact that wineries own some land and also that they use contract growers to increase their fruit supply. He demonstrated this using a map at one of the wineries.

Fun, personal experience and great value!
Dec 2018 • Couples
This wine tour was a real highlight of our cruise in New Zealand! From the time of booking, Chris was responsive and organized, and he provided detailed instructions for when and where to meet that left no uncertainty or worry related to booking independently of the cruise.

Our group had six guests, in a friendly, small-group environment that allowed us to get to know fellow travelers, as well as Chris and his wife, who were chatty and personable and from whom we learned a lot about living in the Marlborough area. They were knowledgeable about the different wineries in the area and different offerings of each, and were flexible in choosing which ones to visit depending on our preferences. We were able to visit several (Allan Scott, Hunters, Clos Henri, and more), including a lunch stop, a walk in the vineyards, and a bonus lookout/photo point, without feeling rushed and got back to the Picton I-site well in time to return to the ship.

This tour was a great value - a much better price and itinerary than the cruise ship excursion as well as many of the other companies we considered. Tasting fees were included. Highly recommend!

Hi Pim, Thank you very much for your very detailed review. We really do try to be very chatty with our guest and educate them as per your comments. One of Cruise ship guests big concern is getting back to the ship on time. We have been doing cruise ship tours for many years and we always get guests back to Picton 1/2 hour before the last shuttle to ensure there is no stress for our guests. I hope you had a good flight back to the USA. Thank you, Chris
