What to expect
  • The Mountain Pine Ridge reserve is over 100,000 acres of protected forest. It is comprised mainly of Honduras pine and some wetlands, the Macal River valley and some subtropical forest. The area is mainly granite and limestone, and is home to numerous rivers, springs, waterfalls and caves. This is truly a nature lover’s haven! There is a small forest ranger post and very little habitation, except for a couple of isolated Maya communities and a small settlement of Mennonites. A former logging settlement at San Luis is now abandoned because the area has been protected since the 1940s. This stunning and unique natural habitat is home to numerous bird and mammal species, and is a great place for birdwatching and enjoying the peace of the natural environment. The first feature of the reserve that we will explore is the Rio Frio Cave, the source of the Rio Frio river and the largest cave entrance in Belize. Our next stop is the Rio On Pools, a series of shimmering natural swimming holes and rock water slides that allow for cooling relaxation and meditation. Enjoy a water massage from cascading waterfalls that run over a wide river bed and smooth granite rocks. Take a homemade picnic lunch break at the pools followed by a short drive to our next destination, the fabulous Big Rock Falls, a 150-foot waterfall on Privassion Creek. Here, the cool spray of mist from the waterfall refreshes swimmers in the clear, deep pool below. This day of hiking, spelunking, swimming and possible wildlife watching is not to be missed!

This was everything we had hoped for: beauty, adventure, history, culture, and fun.

Our guide was Anselmo, who has Mayan ancestry and shared such rich insights on the Mayan culture and Belize history as we drove from San Ignacio to the highlands. He was funny, patient, accommodating, and overall a great host.

Our first stop was Big Rock Falls, which includes the biggest adventure of the trip. You climb down a set of rickety old wooden steps through the forest to get to the falls. Then the guide helps you navigate the safest way across the very slippery rocks to swim across the main pool toward the falls. The water was cold, but it was worth it to experience the beauty and peace. Anselmo was smart to make this our first stop as we had it all to ourselves.

The second spot was Rio Frio Cave, a truly sacred place to visit respectfully. It is not an adventure cave; it is wide and tall, not requiring squeezing through narrow passages. Standing in the middle, you can see both ends. Again, Anselmo’s knowledge added richly to this unique site.

After coming out the cave, Anselmo spread a picnic blanket on a table and set out a wonderful Belizean meal of rice and carrots and stew chicken, plus rum punch. This ultimately was the best meal I had in all my 9 days in Belize (and we ate at a wide variety of restaurants!).

Our final stop was Rio On Pools, a beautiful setting for sitting and enjoying the beauty even if you don’t see like getting wet. There are changing rooms for getting in/out of your swimming attire.

The roads to get to these locations are a bit of an adventure themselves. Be prepared for a rough and bumpy ride. (We loved it, but it’s not for everyone.)

Even my 17-year-old said she thoroughly enjoyed every part of this excursion. Thank you, Anselmo and Maya Walk Tours!

We went on the Mountain Pine Ridge tour with Joshua and Julio and had an amazing time--breathtaking views of the waterfall and pools, plus a large cavern and creek that's fun to climb around and explore. We went with my mother-in-law who was 70, and she was able to reach every site on the trip thanks to our guides' patient guidance. We really could not have asked for more considerate guides--Joshua helped her down the steps to the waterfall, lending a helping hand when needed, and they laughed and joked the whole time. We had such a great experience we decided to do a second tour with MayWalk the following day--cave tubing at the Nohoch Che'en Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve.

This was my first tour in San Ignacio. Our tour guide, Francis, was great and even provided lunch with rum punch. There are 3 stops. The first is to a cave, then to the Rio pools, and finally a waterfall. There's more sitting the car than the other tours I did between the stops.

I did this tour with Paradise Expeditions and our guide Lucy was phenomenal! She has taken so much training for tourism that she has facts and stories about everything we saw all day!

Most of the tour is spent driving. The road is a very rough forestry type road and it’s slow going. The cave is spectacular, the waterfall and swimming was beyond fantastic, and the 1000 ft falls is a great view.

I highly recommend this tour for anyone, including families. I loved that none of the sites were crowded with people. I wish hiking had been a component, but I really enjoyed it anyway.

My trip was booked and there were four others due. They didn’t arrive but the company still run the tour with me alone.
I booked this trip because I wanted to see the waterfalls and the National Park. I’m not young and a lot of hiking was not an option. I got to see fantastic views, lovely waterfalls, had a delicious lunch with a great view (and rum punch!) it was possible to go swimming but I opted out. I would certainly recommend it if you can.
My guide was so very knowledgable and extremely helpful, in fact it would have been impossible without his help.
If this trip is an indication of what the other trips offer you can’t go wrong.

We had a great time using Maya Walk! I don’t remember our guides name, but it was for the Rio Frio Falls, and the Rio On Pools, and the cave on November 3rd, 2019. They were all such amazing sights. We loved swimming in the Rio On pools. Our guide was awesome! When we got to Rio Frio pools, we wanted to jump off a high ledge, but at the last minute I got too scared. So he climbed all the way up with my friends, and jumped off with them. Once they finished I changed my mind and wanted to try it, and he went through the hassle of climbing back up again and jumping off with me. Then, we were talking about some of the animals we wanted to see, and he kept stopping, pulling over, and pointing out different animals for us to check off our list! He ended up spotting 6 keel billed toucans!

We spent yesterday with MayaWalk Tours in pine ridge mountains. The scenery was beautiful - large cave, Rio pools. Big rock waterfall was incredible and the water was perfect for a nice swim. The staff was great and the tour was well worth the price.
