      Awesome snorkeling .
Loved the small boat tour. Captain saw a boat out far and brought us out to see if pilot whales and there were. Saw them from distance then stopped engine and a couple came over and swam under boat!. Great instructions when we got to bay to snorkel. Wonderful amazing variety of fish in such clear water!. There were a couple spinner dolphins briefly a bit away. We took 11am tour. If you go earlier you may see more Description and info on a couple stops on way back that we're good. I enjoyed seeing the long tailed hills.

Highly recommend! Captain Corey and 1st Mate Sara provided an amazing experience =-)
My husband and I have traveled to Hawaii about a dozen times and always enjoy our adventures here. Hawai’i Oceanic’s tour to Kealakekua Bay (Captain Cook monument) might be our favorite! Corey and Sara were friendly and entertaining from the start. In the trip to the dive spot we went out to sea to look for whales, whale sharks or Bottle-nose dolphin. No luck but the snorkel dive was amazing! Listen to Corey when he points out the best spots. The community of sea life is diverse and abundant! We had 90 minutes of water time before snacks and a quick tour of the bay. Then, as if by magic, Corey found spinner dolphins.🐬 Corey whistled and they leapt about in the spins that gave them their name. Beautiful! On the way back we got a perfect view of the rugged cliff revealing the goddess Pele! It looks just like the scene in Moana! We all arrived home tired, happy and no one got the least bit seasick. Highly recommend!

      Awesome Tour Group!
This was a wonderful experience and highly recommend. Our first trip had to be cut short by maybe 45 minutes due to health related problem with one of the other passengers. They offered to rebook us, but we had such a great time and the crew was awesome that we didn’t find it to be a big deal. THEY then reached out again! That’s the kind of people and business they are. So we went again and once again had a wonderful time with the crew, the snorkeling, and tour. Thanks again and will definitely rebook next time we are here. Thank you!

      Excellent snorkeling experience and service
Managed to get a last minute booking. Jordan and our captain were very knowledgeable about the wildlife and history. On the way to the cove they took us to deep waters where animals had been spotted recently, which led us to some pilot whales. We were on an early tour before the cove got crowded. They started us in a perfect spot to see lots of coral and fish. They had prescription masks available, which it turned out I needed badly. Fresh pineapple and snacks after the dive and a few stops at interesting geological sites on the way back. Great tour!

Definitely worth it! Very laid back and fun tour!
Captain Alan and Jayna were great hosts, very casual and fun. Kealakekua Bay gets very very crowded, this seemed to be the best time since many tours go either in the morning or the afternoon. We went in between the two so didn't have as many boats there, it was very nice snorkeling. You need to be a decent swimmer and should have some snorkeling experience, it was basically "here's your mask and snorkel, have fun." We also stopped at a couple of notable shore places on the way back, which added some nice touches. Thanks for the great tour!

      Great snorkeling on this trip
We had an amazing time on our snorkeling adventure. We went on the 8 am trip, it was less crowded. The crew took really good care of us and we had a 10 year old and 8 year old on board. It was the best!

Very pleasant small group snorkeling experience with Hawaiian Oceanic
We had a great time with the small group experience on the snorkel outing to the Captain Cook monument underwater park. Carmel our snorkeling guide and Cory our captain did a great job explaining and entertaining when they needed to and otherwise stay out of the way. Their smaller (but not small!) boat seemed to get us there a bit earlier in the day, as the location eventually gets a bit overrun with other snorkeling parties. Just when we got there we noticed down dolphins playing in the water around the boat, which of course delighted us and made us get in the water a bit later. Swimming with the dolphins is no longer permitted but watching them is! The reef and coral area is nice and easy to swim with plenty of fish to see. Just when we boarded back onto the boat a manta ray was swimming deep underneath the boat as a stylish finish. On the return trip they sprinkle in a few stops along the coast to explain rock formations and related Hawaiian tales…a nice touch of culture. Overall a nice short (3 h) trip which we finished off with a nice lunch in nearby Kona.

Best snorkeling on the island and first boat to arrive!!
We had a wonderful experience with Hawaii Oceanic, on April 22, 2024, our Captain and crew were friendly, helpful, funny and very knowledgeable. The Captain took us out and we searched for dolphins and whales on our way to Kealakekua Bay, the trip was gorgeous. When we arrived WE WERE THE FIRST BOAT THERE, so we had it all to ourselves for about half an hour! They gave great instructions and really encouraged us to go slow and how to look for octopi, etc... I want to add that to anyone who says it's a dead reef... with no life. Their eyes were closed. We've snorkeled in top places all over the world and yes, there's been a decline in reefs everywhere, BUT HAWAII is the only place that we've seen NEW CORAL GROWING back!!!! The water clarity in Kealakekua Bay was crystal clear, SO many fish, eels, coral, etc, etc... we could not have asked for more! Also we got to go at our own pace (we stayed out a bit longer than others) and were served fresh pineapple, chips and drinks when we got back onboard. Then we got to hang around sleeping dolphins and stopped at several historical locations on the way back to the harbor. Well worth the money and highly recommended!!!

Dead coral and sparse number of fish.
Though it is a helpful and pleasant crew, I come to see the coral and fish. These coral are dead. I saw no living coral and that meant the number of fish were quite sparse. Fish were surviving on the growths on the dead coral.

      Snorkeling in Kona
What a Great Excursion. Small group experience which is what we wanted. The captain and crew member were both knowledgeable about the area and safety conscious at all times. I won't hesitate to use this company again when in Kona.

A magical day! Jayna and Cody ran a welcoming and wonderful ship. As a traveler with a mobility disorder, they were so kind and supportive in helping me to safely enjoy snorkeling in the aquatic wonderland of Kealakekua Bay. Would absolutely recommen!

      Great experience
Staff was so Amazon! Saw so much marine life (dolphins, whales, TONS of fish). We’ve been snorkeling quite a few times and I would say that this was the best time we’ve had. Highly recommend.

Manta Magic lived up to all the great reviews. A wonderful experience to observe these manta rays - they are magnificent and so graceful - they glide as though they are flying in the air. The big blue does not disappoint with its beautiful royal blue crystal clear waters especially as the sun sets. The Captain and staff are very friendly and knowledgeable and make the entire trip perfect from check in to walking off the boat when you return to harbor. This is a must do in Kona!

Took the teens to go see some manta rays. Super friendly crew and Micah was fantastic with information and helpful tips. The sunset tour was perfect. Early enough that we were in the water just after sunset, and hardly any other boats there at that time. The manta rays were there almost on cue. We saw at least five, I believe, and they were AMAZING. They came SO close to us, it was stunningly beautiful. My daughter is 14 and a bit nervous in open water, but the guides were great at reassuring her, the wetsuits totally helped. Even once in the water, they were still making sure we were comfortable and moved us around to better positions to see the rays. All in all, this was a fantastic tour. Cannot thank the crew enough for such a great experience.

We were on a small boat with 11 people in total. Small no frills operation. But, the most amazing experience due in part to the size of the crew and tour group. We saw other groups with 20-30 people all crammed together in the water. Our water guide (Aaron) pulled/swam our group to the area where the mantis were swimming. We saw numerous mantas with multiple barrel rolls right in front of our faces. Literally inches away. We could see straight down the manta throats, every spot and speckle on the body, and even the little fishes attached to them. Choose Hawaii Oceanic, you will not be disappointed.

What an amazing experience! Our guides, Hunter and Justin were both absolutely fantastic. They were incredibly knowledgeable about all things manta rays. We did the 7:30p dive and saw about 6 or 7 (I lost count) swimming beneath us. It’s a must do for those interested in marine life. No worries if you aren’t a strong swimmer or a non-swimmer, the guides will make sure you are safe the entire time you’re on the water. Definitely opt for a wet suit if you go in the fall like we did, the water isn’t freezing but the extra layer is preferred and the wet suits are part of the fee.

Well-organized, good equipment, knowledgeable crew, and oh, those manta rays. The first 5 minutes left us feeling maybe the big fish had had enough of us humans, but THEN….here they came gliding, circling, flipping silently and gracefully almost nose to nose with us. Amazing animals,, subsisting only on plankton, the snowy flakes swirling about them.
Definitely a memorable experience… and a big thank you to Hunter, who shared so much information, respect and affection for these beautiful creatures.

The go pro camera provided for rent gave us wonderful video, too.

This is an updated review based on my experience on July 11, 2021. After explaining our disappointment from our excursion being cut in half, Tom, the owner, graciously offered a refund. He took the time to listen to my customer concerns and is in the process of correcting the errors on his website. I am hopeful that anyone who uses this outfit will get the whole experience they paid for I. The future. The mantas are magnificent creatures and I still recommend anyone to take a trip to see them in their habitat. It’s a memory you will cherish!

Absolutely incredible!! We had a super fun group and and the crew made the experience so enjoyable. It's a short boat trip out and you maximize the time by being in the water with these incredible creatures (mantas). My wife, friend, and I were screaming like school children as the mantas approached and they definitely enjoyed the noise we were making because they kept coming back for more. A must do and Kona and Hawaii Oceanic is the way to go. Great crew and they took really good care of us. We ended up booking other tours with them just because this was so fun. DO THIS tour!!

This experience blew our minds. In theory we knew how big manta rays get. We knew we might see one. But seeing one up close…. Wow. We saw a male pretty quickly and he came right up, flipped on his back and skimmed the ‘surfboard’ we were hanging on to. He did this many times. We were stoked thinking that was pretty awesome. But that wasn’t the best part. Captain Justin moved the boat (and us) a bit and then the real show began. We saw 6 or 7 of them. 5 kept coming up for a snack. One of the females (our guide, Brent, said her name is Chloe) had a 13-15 ft wingspan. And she is apparently notorious for having no personal space. We experienced that! It was spectacular. They are massive fish!!!

The entire team at Hawaii Oceanic made us feel welcomed and safe. Booking through trip advisor was easy. Lexy was super friendly and helpful greeting us. The boat ride is so short that we didn’t get much time with Captain Justin and Caspian but they were helpful, friendly and willing to answer any questions. Brent was super helpful in the water. I would have liked to ask more questions but I was too busy with my head down looking at the rays.

Caution: do not lie about your snorkel experience. It will not serve you well. You have to be confident snorkelling in the ocean - not a pool. The waves can swell a bit. And we went in the dark. We had several people panic before we had even seen a ray and had to go back to the boat. Absolutely no shame in that at all!

This is a bucket list item - check it off!!!

This was a once in a lifetime, unforgettable experience. I’m VERY happy our family booked with Hawaii Oceanic for a few reasons. The staff was fantastic, professional, and personable. Justin was in the water with us the whole time and told us all about the mantas and their behavior while positioning and repositioning our board in the ideal locations. He frequently checked in on all of us to make sure we were doing ok. There was also a captain on the boat and another staff member keeping an eye on everyone and helping people get in/out of the water. I felt very safe and was very happy we were on this boat. There were many other boats out there- and some were literally packed with people like sardines. I really don’t know how they kept tabs on all of those people or how they even get alerted if someone wanted to get out of the water.

The experience was incredible, but please keep in mind that this might be a panic-inducing for some people. I found it very disorienting to be in the dark, in dark water, looking down for 45 minutes into blue nothingness with twinkling plankton. (One woman in our group actually went back in the boat within the first 3 minutes.) Even though you’re a 5 minute boat ride off shore it’s very rocky when you’re in the swells in the water and you’re bobbing up and down constantly. If there is any chance whatsoever you might get motion sickness, do yourself a favor and take a Bonine beforehand. (I sure wish I did!)

We did the sunset/twilight tour and it was great. It was still dusky when we entered the water, but totally dark when we got out. The mantas didn’t care that we were the first group of the night- there were tons of them and they put in a great show!!!

The mantas were absolutely incredible and I am so happy we went with Hawaii Oceanic. They are professional, organized, knowledgeable, and run a great operation.

I can not say enough great things about this amazing adventure and the crew we had! Everyone was great, personable and professional from Lexi and Emily who contacted us after booking and meet us at the van for check in, wet suit jacket fittings and instructions to Captain Justin and Erik. The boat ride was a short 5 minutes and Justin and Eric were full of interesting Manta Ray facts and information they shared with us on the boat and once in the water. I went with my daughter and even though we were both nervous about being in the ocean at night is was actually very relaxing and meditative especially with the blue light they use and you can see all the way to the bottom most of the time. I was not ready for the excitement and awe that followed when the Manta Rays showed up and started feeding and doing barrel rolls right underneath us. I swear I thought every time that they would touch me but they can sense you and they never did. ( You could have touched them but please DO NOT as the guides explained that it is dangerous for the Manta Rays). We saw 5 rays our night and I was impressed that the guides (from other boats too) swam us close together so that we could all share in this once in a lifetime experience!!!! We have been home a couple of days now and my daughter and I are still giddy and telling everyone about the highlight of our trip to the big island. If you on the fence don’t be! You will not be disappointed once you experience seeing the Manta Rays up close in their natural habitat! I hope to go back and I will definitely book this tour with Hawaii Oceanic. Thank you Lexi, Emily, Justin and Eric for this experience and all of the interesting information that made me come home and start googling even more amazing information about Manta Rays!
