Took the morning outrigger canoe tour with Uncle Peter. While we did some paddling, Uncle Peter did more than his fair share of the work, expertly guiding us around the bay and providing interesting cultural information. We snorkeled with manta and saw the most diverse variety of fish. No spinners that day, but the manta more than made up for it! It was easy to get back into the canoe with either a ladder or a shallow spot close to the shore. The early morning tour gets you to the monument before the big boats arrive, plus the water was very calm and clear - easier to paddle and snorkel. We used our own snorkel masks but borrowed the company’s fins. They had snorkel gear as well. Juice and snacks also provided. GREAT TOUR!

Aloha, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us this incredible review. We are thrilled you folks had a great tour with Peter (my dad.) Manta rays are actually more rare to see in the bay so you definitely saw a gem! Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your adventure in Hawai'i. Mahalo, Kapii

Excellent way to experience the Captain Cook snorkelling area. Easy low key paddle over to the snorkeling area. Our catamaran canoe had 9 people on board, 6 of us shared the paddling. Very easy. Highly recommend taking the 8 am tour since at about 10 am the snorkeling area is flooded with tour boats and snorkelers. We were able to get over and have about an hour with just a few others in the area before the swarms of other people arrive. Water is beautiful and the tour guide gives a lot of historical background on the area. He is a local and owner of the outfit. They provide a dry bag for your personables and some light snacks. Only need to bring your camera and sunscreen.

Since we were the only booking, the Mrs and I, with our guide, owner, operator Uncle Peter, launched a single hull outrigger canoe at 0800. It was a beautiful morning as the sun started peaking over the Pali that forms the bay. As we paddled towards the NE, a pod of dolphins were spotted. We made our way to the southern end of the bay and observed them. Uncle Peter slapped his paddle on the surface of the water to mimic the sound of a dolphin hitting it’s tail on the water. The dolphins hung around and surfaced for air. Then we proceeded N and watched a manta ray swim alongside and under the canoe in 6 to 8 feet of water below us. Wow. We paddled up to the Capt Cook Monument and took photos. Uncle Henry provided lots of historic info of the Hawaiian and British interactions in the 1780’s. He actually showed us the spot where Cook met his fate. Now it was time to snorkel. The water clarity is rated 2nd best in the world and it didn’t disappoint and neither did the marine life. Abundant colorful and different varieties of fish everywhere. It must have been our lucky day because we even saw a spotted Moray eel and a pod of 14 dolphins cruised by us not more than 20’ away. Swimming with dolphins, does it get any better than that? We had the place mostly to ourselves so far, now the tour boats started showing up packed with their guests. It gets real crowded when they anchor and get into the water. We snorkeled and swam some more, then climbed back into the canoe and headed back to “port”.
This is a great way to see this place. A personal tour guide that knows things that come with experience and knowledge of the area. Of all of the cool stuff we did, this was the highlight of our Big Island visit.

Aloha, We are so happy to hear that this was the highlight of your trip! The cultural canoe tour is the most relaxing and educational experience. Peter (my dad and the owner) has so much knowledge about the area and it's great that this gives him the opportunity to share it with others. The marine life in Kealakekua Bay is absolutely breathtaking. I have been swimming in the bay since I was a child, and I am still in awe of its beauty every time I see the marine life! Thank you for taking the time to leave this great review and we hope to see you again soon! Mahalo, Kapii

If you're looking for a safe, fun, and educational snorkeling adventure that kids and all members of the family can engage in, this is the one. We needed a tour that would be perfect for beginners and kids (had our 8 year old with us, and our 13 year old who is scared of the ocean, and my wife who has a disability), and it was an amazing time.

The guide (Peter) is a native of the island with a wealth of history knowledge and a kind heart. The location is fun to access (winding roads through scenic hills down to the shore). Once there you kayak (you can assist with the paddling, or not) towards a small bay with shallow waters and lots of fish. Along the way he recounts the history and mythology of the area and shares snacks including local fruit (lychee!).

Be aware there is a 20 minute kayak ride to and from the snorkeling site, but you stay pretty close to shore - you're not going deep out into the ocean. Still, if you're prone to seasickness like me, pre-medicate and bring some more along, and hydrate early and often. Once at the snorkeling site there is no way to get on land until you head back to the starting point. My kids got a little sick on the ride over but he had a place for my 8yo to lay down until we got there, once we all got in the water we were fine.

Peter is such a nice and accommodating guide, as is his son and other workers. Bring your own snorkel gear / life preservers OR rent them when you book, as they have them available.

His family also owns a Poke restaurant so make sure to ask him about it and support them!
If you're not into Poke, nearby Shaka Tacos is the way to go.

I originally tried to book 3 triple kayak for our party of 10 (including 4 elderly and 4 children) but uncle Peter suggested we get a canoe for our moms instead so that we can have a guide and he can hold our kayak while we snorkel. What a great advice that was! Uncle Peter was out guide and he led us through the bay during which one of our kayak was capsized. He immediately helped us get back on track and kept a close watch over all of us as most of us were not great swimmers. He even took pictures and videos of us because all of us didn’t have our cameras handy. We saw dolphins, sharks and manta rays! We are so thankful to have gone on this excursion with uncle Peter and highly recommend using the canoe if you have any little children (ours ranged from 5-10) or inexperienced swimmers. I would definitely do this tour again if we ever go back to the Big Island! Thank you so much, uncle Peter!

Aloha, Thank you so much for taking the time to right this five star review! We are thrilled Peter's suggestion was beneficial to your party. A canoe tour offers ours guests the most peace-of-mind because hey are on a larger vessel and they are accompanied by a tour guide who is a certified lifeguard. The marine life in the bay is absolutely breathtaking and we are so happy you had the chance to experience it! We hope to see you again in the future and we will definitely relay the appreciation to Peter (my dad!) Mahalo nui, Kapii

When I first signed up I had trouble and while trying to fix it, the default set me up for 8:00AM even though my effort was for 12:30PM. We had to drive from Waimea so 8;00am would never had been a choice as we would have had to leave at 6:30AM. I sent you a request for a change, but did not receive a confirmation. I contact Ehu & Kai and requested the change and got a note saying "I'll make the change". On Wednesday at about 11:45PM we arrived at the waterfront location with poor signage and a tent. We talked with a person that was the Ehu & Kai rep who told us there was no 12:30PM Tour. He called someone named Peter who also said there was no tour and when I explained Peter said he had to cancel. Peter said he called at 8:00AM to remind us of the tour; however, I was driving at the time and did not answer the phone for two reasons: 1) I don't talk on the phone while driving and 2) the call was from a Hilo Area Code. I don't know anyone in Hilo and I have had spam from Hilo in the past. I hit the roof as this ruined the whole plan for our day in Kailua-Kona. I want a full refund of the tour for two people. Please send me a credit to my credit card or send me a check. If I do not hear from you, I will contact the Better Business Bureau and anyone else who will listen. If you have any questions, you can contact me at wendellbrooksjr@aol.com.

Aloha Wendell, Thank you for bringing this our attention. First and foremost, we want to sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this caused on your day to Kailua-Kona. We have issued you a full refund and hope that you are willing to give us another chance the next time to come to the Big Island. Ehu and Kai is a family owned and operated business and unfortunately Peter's sister suddenly passed away during the period in which he was communicating with you in regards to changing your reservation time. Although this is no excuse for the mistake on our end and its affect on your plans, we hope that you will give us some grace as we are all reaping the effects of this devastating loss. Again, we are very sorry for your experience with us and hope that we have the opportunity to serve you in the future. Mahalo, Kapi'i (Peter's daughter)

We did the canoe and snorkeling tour on the Kealakekua Bay. It was great! Small group (maximum 7 people) and early morning departure (8 am) enabled us enjoy the Bay without big crowds. The canoe was very stable, and moved very fast (perhaps we had some very strong rowers). The company owner and our tour guide, Manao, made sure we all enjoyed ourselves and were safe. They had extra snorkeling equipment onboard, and prepared cold drinks and snacks. The water was so clear and full of fish. We definitely will go again with them!

We booked a kayak for the day at Kealakekua bay to go to Captain Cook for some snorkeling, and could not have been more pleased with this tour company. We booked online, drove to the location they sent via email, and they did the work preparing the kayak and our gear, putting it in the water, and helping us get out when finished. They even watched our stuff while we were out, and did it all with a smile.

The only drawback to our day was that Hawaii has passed new laws that prohibit kayaks from beaching near the monument, which we had done in the past. I am sure there are good reasons for this - to preserve the area. But this is still the most popular snorkeling spot on the island, which is evident with 10-11 boats around with scores of passengers that end up in the water to snorkel. We even saw a group jumping into the water next to the monument that had not idea how to preserve the area. As a result, it is clear that overuse of this area by boats and snorkelers has dimished the quality and quantity of the coral and the fish population from the first time we visited this area 12-14 years ago. If the state could limit the number of boats and snorkelers, this place might recover and stay around for many generations.

Aloha, We couldn't agree more with you! It is crucial for companies to stress the importance of preserving the beautiful historical and marine sites me have. Although it is a bummer that our guests can't physically land at the monument, we know that it will only benefit the marine life in the future. Being from Napoopoo, we definitely want our younger generations to experience its beauty as well. Nevertheless, we are so happy you had a great time with us! We are thrilled everything went smoothly from your booking process to kayaking in the bay. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your adventure in Hawaii! Mahalo nui, Kapii

This was the best experience of our whole trip, and we had two weeks on the island. Uncle Peter was so accommodating of us when I thought I needed to cancel our kayaks because of our 4 year old. Instead he let us know of the outrigger canoe tour. He and Mike took us out on the canoe, were very patient with us and our little one, and they anticipated our needs in the water. We never had to ask for things, they grabbed them for us and made sure we had them in the water! It was amazing actually. They listened to us snorkeling in the bay as well and knew when we wanted to come in and out of the canoe and were right there quickly.
Our four year old and my husband stayed on the boat a bit longer than myself and my 14 year old, but we equally enjoyed our experiences! Uncle Peter and Mike talked with my husband like he was a friend, and they treated you as such. We loved learning the history of the bay and the royal Kamehameha family.
In addition I want to say snorkeling in the bay is definitely a world class adventure!
I cannot recommend Ehu & Kai enough; this was a beautiful adventure made more beautiful by the people who made it possible!

Our 1st time in an outrigger. Waters were pretty calm, so the paddling wasn't difficult. Once we got near the Captain Cook monument we got out to snorkel. Such beautiful waters! & filled with so many fish. Our guide even showed the group a small cave with a couple of baby sharks in it. The snacks & juice were especially welcome after being in the bay. So glad we got there early before the bay became crowded. Great experience!
