What to expect
Your Kauai surfing lesson takes place on the North Shore in the waves of Hanalei Bay, where a professional instructor will teach you the basics of the ancient Hawaiian sport. Your expert instructor is a big-wave surfer who is dedicated and passionate about surfing, and who can easily teach you the skills required for learning to ride a wave. During this 2-hour private surfing lesson, you’ll learn the proper place to sit on the board and the best techniques for paddling, as well as how to choose the best waves and what to do if you fall. For beginning surfers, the soft-top boards that are used for lessons are safe, wide, and stable, and are the best boards for learning to surf in the warm waters off Kauai. Winter often has the largest waves, but the protected conditions of Hanalei Bay make the area perfect for learning. If there’s ever a day where the water’s too flat or the ocean is simply too rough, you’ll head to another spot on the island where conditions are a little bit better. This private Kauai surf lesson has one instructor per participant, and a semi-private lesson features one instructor for a group of two or three. Read the Itinerary for more lesson details.

Awesome time with expert surf instructor in Hanalei Bay!
Jun 2021 • Family
Awesome time! our instructor was Miguel . He was patient and an expert-- He knew everything you needed to know and explained it in terms that we all kind of had an " aha " moment and knew exactly what we needed to do.
Best time we have ever had doing surf lessons!

Great, great time. Good instructor, great communication from company
May 2021
Best surf lessons my adult children have ever had.

First of all great communication by the owner prior to our lesson. There is serious road construction on the way to Hanalei and received several texts alerting me to the road schedules a week out from our lesson. We would not have known this without this help.

Got checked in early and it was easy. The instructor for my 21 and 18 year old kids lesson was Nate. He got there early, asked if we wanted to start early we did. We commuted the 2 minutes to Hanalei Bay and he gave them about 20 minutes of onshore instruction. My daughter had been surfing about half a dozen times and my son twice. Both were beginners, but my son had really struggled prior to this lesson.

Nate got them out in the water and the waves were just perfect. Slow to break, giving them time to get set properly. My daughter rode almost every wave for the 90 minutes. My son struggled early, but Nate told him to focus on the very first part of the pop up and getting stable, and by the end of the session, my son was up on every wave. A miracle to say the least.

Great time by all, would highly recommend this group again.

A great time had by all! All 3 were up on the board and catching waves straight away! Luca did a great job giving them an “extra push” into the wave... and maybe some”towing” back out a bit to preserve their energy! Would definitely recommend these guys. When we return we will be booking this group again!!

Started Great - Ended in an Injury Due to a Surf Instructors Negligence & Stupidity
Oct 2019
So this is one of the worst reviews I ever had to write. Everything started of great in the morning, with my wife and I having a single instructor between us. The check-in experience was easy, since we had surfed before the beginning lesson was appropriately kept simple, and surfing on Hanalei Bay was beautiful! Unfortunately, things turned into a nightmare after an hour of surfing. The second instructor, not our instructor, insisted on standing in the main pipeline and pushing his group of beginners onto the waves. Basically, it was easier to do that than properly teach them to catch a wave. This ultimately lead to that idiotic instructor push some goofy loser into my wife as she surfed by them on the board. This lead to a collision, and my wife lost her big toenail as his board rode over top of hers. We spent the next two hour at urgent care having the toenail completely removed, irrigated, and wrapped. Yes, it ruined the entire rest of the Hawaii vacation, and it cost $500 in medical bills. No, there was not an apology, and no real help was given upon the injury. Simply put, they did not care because we had signed a injury waiver. Because of this, I would not suggest surfing with this company. Honestly, there are much better options available in Maui, with actual caring instructors. If you do go, stay away from the idiot giving instructions in my picture. Trust me - He doesn't care about anything but his tips. As for the company, they will hold you responsible for surf board damage, but deny everything if you are damaged. Sad but true....

Aloha Roger. So sorry for the experience your wife and you had with us. Yes you are correct we do have the waiver which expresses that with any sport including surfing there is a chance of injury. We do hate it when it happens and we do try very hard. There are a lot of people in the water especially during holiday seasons and the instructors do try. There are other companies out there as well as people practicing on their own. A person can be going one way and then can change direction or their angle for one reason or another or for no reason at all. It is a beginner area but accidents happen no matter how experienced people are. In this case board to board your wife's toe got involved in a bad way. Her toe and toe nail. The instructor you have pictured was actually the one that helped your wife with the first aide kit to wrap her toe. He was on the land. She had told her instructor to continue with you on the lesson and that she would be fine. Also another instructor came after toe wrapped and asked what happened and your wife told what happened but said she did not know who the person was. I don't think she would have said the one who helped her with the wrap was the person. And your instructor did say she was going to clinic to check it out. When a toe nail lifts up I know you do go in and they flush it and try to lay it down if still connected and wrap it. Of course we are all having a hard time with the cost of medical attention. To do with board breaking I am not sure what you are referring to. Students are not responsible if there is damage to equipment. If people rent boards then they are responsible which is the case everywhere. I also don't know why you would talk about tips. This is our 20 th year and we do try each and every day to do a good job. Again so sorry you feel the way you do and please take care. Yours, Lynn Alapa

Great staff!
Great staff! They could not have done it better. Kids still talks about it.
It was raining a lot and at first we thought we should postpone the activity. Good thing that we didn’t. Probably the best thing we did during our stay in Hanalei. The instructors took good care of us, specially the kids.

My kids surfed!
Jul 2019 • Family
I was completely impressed with this outfit. Our kids had never surfed before so we were not expecting that they would even be able to stand long on a surfboard much less ride a wave into the shore. They DID! Scott was very patient and made sure that everyone had a chance to experience success. We could not have asked for a better opportunity to learn to surf!

Surfing with Evan
Jul 2019 • Family
Evan was very patient and fun on our first day surfing. He taught us the basics and gave us lots of time to practice in the ocean. He's great with kids (the lesson included myself and my 10 yr old).

We loved that they took us to another location when Hanalei wasn't conducive. Thanks for being adaptable and informative. We received numerous texts with updates.

We also love that they give you discounts on future surfboard rentals and lessons.

We all Surfed!!
Apr 2019 • Family
This was great. Semi private lesson for me and two teenaged girls. None of us had ever surfed before but our instructor "Big Sean" was perfect. He told us all we needed to know to get us started. The beach and waves at Hanalei Bay were perfect that day and all three of us managed to get up and surfing in no time. The girls were not particularly athletic, and still they were able to do it! They also have a professional photographer on the beach so if you want, you can buy some great pics afterward. The scenery is beautiful so you will get some great shots for sure. Big Sean also gave us all kinds of local tips and restaurant recommendations - which we took him up on and he was on the money!

For the girls, they say this was their best day of the entire trip. Me too.

Amazing with kids!
I took surf lessons with David yesterday, along with my 9 year old daughter and 8 year old son. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience from a surf school.

All staff were super friendly, and most importantly, David was amazing with my children. The kids were unfortunately much more timid about the surfing experience than I expected, but his kindness and patience with them truly impressed me.

As for me, he helped me catch a ton of waves all while he was managing my scared kids haha.

I absolutely recommend this business and would love to come back one day!
