This was our first return visit since the devastating rains of 2018, when the gardens suffered major damage. Rebuilding is a slow process, but they are well on their way - with an eye to climate change and more severe weather events. Learning about the plants is interesting, but more so is learning about the history of their arrival in Kauai and how they have impacted the native ecosystem. The views are spectacular and for only $10 you can immerse yourself in a "true" Kauai for a couple hours while learning about its history. Book directly with them, online.

We made reservations online the same day for a self-guided tour of Limahuli Gardens. It was easy to find and a relaxing way to spend an hour on the gorgeous island of Kauai. You must make a reservation online before going because they only allow a certain number of people/cars each hour. When you arrive, they give you a map and detailed brochure to help guide you through the garden. Views of Bali Hai are spectacular.

Short & interesting walk. The total walk tales about 1.5 hours, 200 ft elevation on gravel path and lava steps. The booklet is excellent and plants are signed. This one on the north shore is much smaller than the one on the south shore. The focus here is on forest restoration and Hawaiian culture

Overall we really enjoyed the beautiful gardens. The fact that it is self guided allows you to spend as much or little time as you want (we took about an hour.). However, you obviously don’t get as much story as perhaps other gardens. The views and plants are spectacular. The contrast between native and non native species is well done. There is a rather steep climb that may be a little too much for those with walking difficulties. Overall a great value and recommended.

These gardens were lovely. Parking is very limited and reserved for Garden walk attendees only, so reservations are a must! The staff put much time and effort into a booklet describing the history, trees, flowers, and views visible along your walk. The full circuit of the gardens takes about 90 minutes. The view of Bali High (from South Pacific) was stunning. After our tour we simply spent the rest of the afternoon at one of the beautiful north shore beaches. Lovely day!

Visiting the botanical garden was a great family experience. Very young children might get bored but it is a fun and easy walk with much to see and learn about. The booklet that is given at the start of the tour is full of interesting information. The view from the top of the hill is awesome. Reservations are required due to the limited parking that is available, so plan ahead. Covid protocols are being carefully followed.

Stunning gardens with an amazing view of the mountains! The self guided walking tour was a great activity for anyone interested in seeing the beautiful biodiversity of Kauai, leaning more about the native plants of the island, or finding a spectacular view of the mountains. This is a must-see for anyone staying on the North Shore and a great value for the admission price.

There are bathrooms on the property and a parking lot so you don’t have to park on the highway. The trail for the walking tour was not strenuous by any means but it is uphill. I did it in flip flops and was fine but I recommend close-toed shoes if you have them. Be sure to bring a rain jacket, as it showers frequently!

Gorgeous! Excellent value ($25 for adults, kids were free). Plan ahead. Like (nearly) everything in Kauai, you need advance registration. This is an excellent option if you were hoping to get to Haena State Park, but cannot get into it (it's booked). This garden is at the entrance to the state park (just before it). It is difficult to get to with all of the closures (and the roads are a little rough, slow going), so plan ahead on that part too.
The staff was extremely nice and helpful. The views are amazing - I mean truly spectacular. It was very serene (not busy at all due to limitation of visitors...or maybe it is always like this).
I did not go to any of the other gardens on the island, but I thought this place was amazing. My kids (8, 10, 13 and 15) also loved it.

Though it takes a bit of a drive to get to, this is a wonderful oasis of calm and beauty. A very detailed booklet tells you about the plants, and the associated culture. Paths are well marked. Some sections are a bit steep but they can be avoided. Nice place to get away from the crowds and connect with the land.

Wonderful guide book and labeled trees and flowers make a satisfying self guided tour. The garden is built on the mountainside, so be prepared for some strenuous paths. Take a water bottle or the paper cups offered at check-in. Online reservations only as parking is very limited. Best closeup view of Makana, or Bali Hai.
