- 401genep0 contributionsGuides matter - awesome experience! The tour guide Eddiebuddy was exceptional. He has a real talent for storytelling and his tour commentary alone was worth our time. Even on the self guided tour we spent a lot of time together on the bus up to the peak, down to the bikes and at midway pickup. The self guided part was the lower half for us and we had fun exploring Makawao and local roads. Of course the scenery and pics were great!Written 16 January 2025
- Blaseradventurer0 contributionsGreat experience but didn’t love the guideThis was a really cool experience. The self guided tour should be more self guided. I understand that there are limitations of where you can bike but the point of self guided is that you want to get out and do your own thing and not listen to a tour. Our guide wanted to be a tour guide and earn his tip sharing everything he knew which isn’t what we signed up for as a self guided tour. The sunrise was amazing and the bike ride was awesome. Make sure you eat a good breakfast before because you may not be able to find anything for hours even though it sounds like you will be able to get breakfast at your leisure. We were starving by the time we could get food.Written 9 January 2025
- 240gordy570 contributionsDay starter specialPerfect Day starter. Transported to the summitt to see the sunrise. Then bike down, lots of switchbacks, curves, so much fun! And even returnee us to our accomodaties. Great job Havier!Written 8 January 2025

- 963missya0 contributionsGreat guide great outfitMy family has been coming to Maui for several years but this is the first time we braved the early morning wake up to see the sunrise and ride down the mountain. Thank God we did! This was an amazing experience with a very well organized outfit. The initial check-in was flawless even for an extremely busy December 31 experience. The staff is funny and professional, which must be hard at 4:00 AM. Our family chose the unguided ride down which was both safe and enjoyable. Last but certainly not least we had the pleasure of Eddie Buddy as our driver and chaperone. This gentleman obviously loves his job! It is refreshing to encounter an individual as enthusiastic about their job and how it affects the customer’s experience as Eddie. Eddie deserves lots of the credit for making a 4:00 AM start enjoyable. Thank you!Written 1 January 2025
- Luvinteachin0 contributionsAmazing Sunrise trip!Fabulous experience we had with our adult children and parents. We had experience levels from very timid to trail riders and all loved this trip. Staff are very friendly and professional and gear is top notch. Communication is excellent. Good to wear plenty of layers for sunrise at the summit as it was quite cold (and we had very little wind). Sunrise is such a beautiful experience. Our guide Dan shared wonderful knowledge as we were driving and his jokes made for a fun filled experience. Bikes and helmets are in excellent condition and the rain gear they provided was great quality Helly Hansen gear. Some on our group opted to wear as wind breakers cruising down the mountain even though we didn’t have any rain. We stopped in Makawao for a delicious breakfast at Freshie’s Maui and would highly recommend. This is a top notch bike company and we would highly recommend this trip. Worth every penny!Written 29 December 2024
- mskt7290 contributions32 tourists and nobody really in charge- what could go wrongI'll start by saying we were on vacation, enjoyed a very beautiful sunrise, and have some fun memories from this excursion. The experience provided by Maui Bike Co was fine-- but incredibly aggravating along the way which made it feel like it was overpriced and I would have a hard time recommending this company to my friends. Prior to the day of our booking, we had messaged the tour company on the TripAdvisor platform to confirm the end time for the day. They said 10-10:30am which worked for our day, so we were looking forward to this activity. They also emailed us requesting a 3:50am arrival and had us complete the liability waiver forms. While one of the guides was on site by 3:50am, communication was haphazard, and the majority of his time was spent trying to get his iPad check in system to work and trying to get families to complete their waivers since the company had not requested this from everyone prior to that morning. Communication was sparse as we waited... The other bus driver/guide arrived around 4:15am with additional guests and he began fitting people with helmets and assigning people to the shuttles- each step was chaotic, from not knowing who had signed waivers, to determining who still needed helmets, to figuring out which bus everyone should be on. We finally departed the bike shop via 2 shuttles at 4:45am. From the dimly lit shuttle in the pitch black, they pointed out a white mailbox, the main street in Makawao, and another random yard telling us to remember to take a left, right, then another left at those landmarks. They also pointed out a church where everyone should check in before proceeding through the final stretch of the bike ride. It was a ton of information haphazardly shared that could have been communicated in a more effective way that we could all remember. We got to the summit around 6:25am. While not completely visible yet, the sun had already started to light up the crater and the area at the summit was packed. It felt like the disorganization led our group to be one of the last to arrive at the summit which was incredibly frustrating after guests had arrived with plenty of time to get on the road much earlier. The summit was beautiful and we got some great photos. The bike ride down starts outside of the official park boundaries due to regulations now in place which was disappointing. As bikes were being assigned and groups were being organized, it was incredibly chaotic because the 2 drivers/guides were trying to take directions from the 2 people who had delivered the bikes-- and there was clearly miscommunication since self-guided riders got assigned to guided groups and more. The TripAdvisor advertisement also advertised doing the switch backs twice- this was not offered. Instead we started the bike ride further down the summit than other bike companies, did the switchbacks only once, stopped before the town of Kula, had to wait for everyone to get to the shuttles, loaded all of the bikes in the trailers, drove about 15 mins down, then all riders got back on their bikes. While the start location and the Kula bypass are due to ordinances, it makes for a choppy experience and feels unworthy of calling this a complete offering. The disorganization at each step of the way further diminished the experience. I'll skip the final stretch of the bike ride in this review because we ultimately had to skip that. Due to all of the time waiting at Maui Bike Co at the beginning, waiting for bike and group assignments after sunrise, and waiting for the final riders halfway down the summit for the Kula bypass, we ran out of time to complete the ride. We took the shuttle ride down after the Kula bypass and got back to Maui Bike Co at 10:30am, the time we were told when inquiring about the excursion. We were glad to be done and wouldn't recommend this company (or experience) to others. The $1 park pass for sunrise is probably the best bet to ensure visitors can see Haleakala just as they desire. For those still reading and interested in why this was so disconnected..... In listening to the employees complain alongside the confusion throughout the day, we came to learn that the company offers direct booking as well as bookings through several third-party vendors like TripAdvisor. Additionally, they offer a variety of Haleakala packages available each day including the sunrise+breakfast, sunrise+guided bike tour, and the sunrise+self guided bike tour. With all of the different experiences and booking platforms, limited communication and day-of leadership, alongside a brand new sign-in/waiver system that the staff said was difficult to use, it's sufficient to say there was a lot of confusion about who had booked what and who should be where -- and the staff just isn't set up for success.Written 27 December 2024
- btripp4130 contributionsGood For Less Experienced Bikers, Unique TourWe had a very good experience on this sunrise tour. They made it easy, providing bikes and equipment for our ride. Our driver, Eddie, was very informative and safety conscious. He also shared a variety of local stories, Hawaiian culture, and myths of chieftains in Hawaiis past to help pass the time in the bus. Our family are all very experienced bikers, with significant road and MTB time under our legs. With that being said, we found the actual bike portion of the tour too short. 14 miles downhill passes by VERY quickly. It was neat and very unique from a traditional bus tour so we would overall recommend it vs riding all day. I would say, a small water bottle and a granola bar to be provided would go a long way. Other than that, pretty fun!Written 24 December 2024
- CareFree20100 contributionsInterrupted ride for no logical reasonFantastic ride. Absurd conformity with “no ride Kula.” Why in the world would there be a requirement not allowing bicycle riding on a public road? Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. Interrupting a ride that with all logic should actually start at the (10,000 feet) top, but starts outside the boundary of the national park is dumb. So starting at 6,500 feet elevation is silly. Stopping the ride at Kula to avoid offending the prima donna residents of Kula is even dumber. I love Maui. But the pretentiousness of residents is overwhelming.Written 18 December 2024
- U1951GXcarolb0 contributionsMt Haleakala sunrise bike tourIncredible! The sunrise was gorgeous and the bike ride down the volcano felt safe and exciting. But I have to say our guide, Eddie Buddy really made it an incredible adventure. His stories, jokes and information were a joy to hear. He and his crew made us feel very safe and watched overWritten 17 December 2024
- vivianfamily10 contributionsExhilaratingIt was an early start to the day but definitely worth it. The volcano sunrise viewing was spectacular. The ride down the volcano was exhilarating but we rode with caution as it is pretty steep with some hairpin turns. The tour guide drummed safety into us which was necessary. Dress warm in layers and oack some breakfast food. Overall, it was very well organised and a great experience.Written 5 December 2024
- Andrew C0 contributionsBeautiful sunrise and invigorating downhill ride!An unforgettable experience! We were in Western Maui so pickup was at 2 AM (oof) to gear up and get to the volcano by sunrise. Make sure you layer with some warm clothes. They provide you with windbreakers which were necessary and appreciated and you may feel like you’re going to be too hot until you get out into the biting wind at the peak. We forgot gloves. Don’t be us. After the sunrise, which was spectacular, we made our way to the bikes and wind your way down the mountain. You have a guide with you leading you on a bike and a following vehicle blocking traffic behind you. A good setup for a very scenic ride. You really do want to be an experienced rider for this trip, though. Be comfortable controlling your speed on a downhill and leaning into turns on banked curves.Written 19 November 2024
- R6883MNkarens0 contributionsGreat ride. Will do this again!Weather wasn't our friend that morning and didn't see the Sunrise. We had raincoats and pants that kept us dry. Once we got started down the mountain we had much better weather. We felt safe and Russell was a wealth of information! He gave helpful advise. We got to the relocation stop and they said it was raining on the next leg so they took us back up for a second run instead. Beautiful rainbows and views. Well worth getting up very early! Thanks everyone. Friends from IL and COWritten 2 November 2024
- H3510OKlaurens0 contributionsCan’t Stop SmilingWe started our first trip to Maui with a visit to Haleakala to see the sunrise. It was an overcast day, so we really didn’t get to see anything and were feeling tired from the 3am start time and a little disappointed, but when the guided bike tour started, that all turned around. Dru led our group of bikers, with Russell folllwing behind in the van, and they absolutely made the experience one of the highlights of our honeymoon. Dru and Russell’s love of Hawaii and biking and their corny jokes set the tone for our day and made it an absolute blast - the perfect way to start the trip! Don’t worry if you’re not in shape (we’re not) - the bike ride is super easy, and they let everyone go at their own pace. Highly recommend this experience, even without the magical sunrise!Written 27 October 2024

I need to do this again when I come back to Maui. I crashed at mile 4 and called it quits! I crashed because I was too confident with my speed and used the bike lane too much. The bike lane was at times being reclaimed by the grass, making it very bumpy.
I think it will be a fun ride the next time I'm in Maui. When I crashed I had a bus pull over right away to help me, they even took my bike down to the base so I didn't have to go back to the shop. Kimo the guide was incredibly friendly for the tour up the mountain, I did the express non-sunrise tour.
You ARE allowed to go up past the starting point. I went half a mile uphill to the entrance to the park. That half-mile was exhausting. No bike rental company is allowed to drop off bikes in the park, but for $12 you can go into the park on your bike and get the full downhill mountain experience after you ascend. Google claimed that extra 4 miles uphill would take 2 hours. It's very steep and lots of switchbacks, with cars you may have to yield to. Their bikes have 8 gears, you need another 16 to really do this climb.

The pre-trip communication was very good and things got even better when we arrived at the Bike Maui headquarters. Our assistant was Kimo, who made us feel welcomed and at ease. He outfitted us with helmets, explained the details of the bicycle, and gave us a detailed safety talk. We loaded up into the van enroute to the 6,500 ft. elevation start point of the ride down. The entire trip up the mountain (volcano) Kimo kept us informed about our route and kept us entertained with his knowledge of the area and his very funny jokes. He was so fun and personable and made us feel confident and safe.
It was a terrific adventure that the nine of us will always have wonderful memories of. We would definitely do it again.

On the day of our excursion there were warnings of flash floods but we proceeded as the main director stated there was an opening and should be fine. We all still wanted to proceed and make it an adventure. Our tour guide up the mountain was nice, informative, and genuine. We didn't make it all the way up to the starting point and that was kind of a bummer and no explanation to why but went with it.. The views on top were amazing, when you could see through the clouds due to the storm that was coming.
The bikes were better then I expected which was a nice surprise compared to other rentals you can get. It started to rain on us again, not a little rain but down pour. Our tour guide stopped us and said we couldn't go any further. I wasn't happy with that part but understood.. I go back and forth if we should had refunded from the beginning as we didn't get the full experience but we still have a story to tell and will refer our friends here.
I would recommend making reservations about 1.5hrs from your schedule time at the Kula Lodge for brunch or stopping in the town just below that for food/drinks.

One of my favorite parts was the ride up because our driver was hilarious and made sure we knew our way back without having to use the maps. He made sure everyone felt comfortable that the ride was "self" guided. Our family all went at their own speed and would stop at different parts to catch up with everyone. I was the slowest rider but I'm glad the others were able to ride faster and enjoy their own experience. My send favorite part was the weather and views. It was perfect! The bikes were great. I'm so impressed with how nice the bikes were. They had top of the line breaks and wheels. My family can't wait to come back and ride again. Thank you Maui Bike for a fun and memorable experience. Mahalo!

My wife and I had been planning this as a bucket list item for awhile. It was a very early morning (3am) but our guide Cory did his best to inform and entertain a weary group of bikers he did an awesome job. The ride down can be a bit scary but mostly because of cars on the road. We stopped and got a pastry which was delicious and we pushed on for our last few miles. We would highly recommend

This was an excellent excursion for my wife, my 16-year old daughter and me. The guides were great and the views were unbelievable. It WAS a bit cold at the top while we waited for the sunrise, and the viewing area did get crowded. However, our patience was awarded with one of the most beautiful sunrises I've ever seen. The bike ride down the volcano was definitely sketchy at first due to the fact it was misty and there are A LOT of hairpin turns; however, once we got a bit lower the weather cleared up and we could really "let 'er rip." I think I pedaled only two times the entire 23-mile trip down (which goes from 10,000 feet to sea-level). We had a great experience and would definitely do it again. Highly recommended.

During two weeks in Maui this experience was a highlight. The views are spectacular, the equipment is safe and well maintained, and the staff is professional and gives solid coaching to keep all the riders safe and make the bike ride a whole lot of fun!
I was a bit hesitant as I'm not comfortable with heights. In my attempt to continually overcome this fear I always challenge myself to get outside of my comfort zone. Yes, this girl with a fear of heights has ziplined and crossed suspension bridges, but I digress. I felt well instructed and safe and it was great fun.
I was in Maui the first week with my husband and the second week with our young adult kids. The tour was a highlight of our Maui vacation. We met at the bike shop at 9:30 a.m. and were driven to 6500 elevation. The summit is 10,000. We were transported to the start point in an air conditioned van. Our guide was Coach, a wonderful tour guide and retired football coach who gave us safety tips, told great stories about the island, and provided a whole lot of laughs on the way up. He gave us great verbal cues on how to remember the self guided route down. "Always turn right at the fork in the road" was the best way to remember the route.
It is 28 miles downhill. It took us three hours because we stopped to take photos at vistas, stopped for a bathroom break, and stopped for lunch. The speed is thrilling, the views are spectacular and the weather was comfortable. I layered with shorts, a short sleeved shirt, and a half zip. By mid ride I took off the half zip. They provide motorcycle helmets and a backpack or you can bring our own. There is a nice clean bathroom stop on the way down at a cute little shop and you can stop for lunch. We stopped at a food truck park and had a great lunch in the shade.
When I did this the second week with my three more daring twenty something kids we finished in an hour and a half and enjoyed the thrill of the speed while staying safe and stopping a couple of times to take photos of beautiful vistas. Totally different experience one week later with the kids seeing it through their more youthful perspective.
I highly recommend this company for their professional staff, safe biking equipment, and great tour guide Coach. Five out of five on all counts! Well done Bike Maui.

This was fun! We took the 9am tour up to the national park stops and self guided bike ride back. The guide was friendly, knowledgeable, open to questions and discussions, and very thorough in showing us the route to the bottom. The landmarks were great, except I was having so much fun I forgot to turn into the bike return part of the shop and ended up going to the stoplight at the front. No biggie.
The rain! Wow! We got misted at the top, rained on a little lower, and dumped on just past the halfway point. And hail? Maybe. We had a rain jacket on (provided) but not pants. Honestly glad about not taking the pants because it would have been uncomfortable, wouldn't have stopped our shoes from filling up with rain, and I brought a change of clothes anyway. Never on the windy, rainy way down did we want to quit or complain. It was still a fun, and a beautiful adventure. Of course it was sunny and gorgeous at the bottom and we had a nice afternoon in the nearby town of Paia.
The staff are fun, friendly, and really care about everyone having an enjoyable, safe ride. We were very satisfied with our choice to use Bike Maui!

This was a highlight of our families trip to Maui. The bike ride itself was exhilarating. The Kona bikes are in great shape and seem more capable than the other bikes from other companies we saw on the road. Full, face helmets, rain gear and back packs were provided. Everything we needed. The road is twisty and gets quite speedy at points, but we went at our own pace and never felt unsafe or vulnerable. Lots of stops for beautiful vistas and photos and a longer stop at the Maui tea farm for some tea and snacks.
As fun as the biking was, the trip up the mountain with our guide Kimo may have even been better. His love for the history, fauna and people of the area was palpable and he entertained and educated the whole way up. More than once he told us how much he was "Winning!" Just by living on this island and doing this job and his spirit was perfect for the start of our vacation. He also gave us all the necessary information for a safe and pleasant ride down the volcano. Even a bit of rain at the end did nothing to dampen our spirits. Highly recommend the ride and Kimo as a guide!

Our family enjoyed the 9 am bike ride tour on our trip to Maui this week. Bike Maui had just reopened and the employees are enthusiastic about getting back into doing their tours. Each of the employees we were in contact with were easy to be around and gave us history about the island and tour info. Our tour guide/driver Kimo was fun with his stories. Bikes were great, sturdy and disc brakes! Photos along the way are memorable🌞🌴

Can we do the self guided bike tour with my 10 and 12 year old sons?

What time do we check-in at the Bike Shop, to begin the trip?

We were allowed 2.5 hours to make the trip down but it only took us 1.5 hours. The time restriction was more about getting back before their store (bike return) closed. Their hours are very early in the day due to the sunrise tours they offer.

Our family of 6 adults is very interested in the self-guided bike tour but also want to hike a couple trails at the summit, especially Sliding Sands Trail. Is there any way to combine hiking and biking down in a single trip? If we have to pick hiking at the summit or biking down, any advice from someone who has done both will be appreciated. Thanks.

The bike tour does not start from the park but rather outside of it. So you wouldn’t be able to do hiking and bike together. I also wouldn’t recommend the bike trip for families with smaller children because you have to ride on the road in very tight quarters with traffic and at times it can be quite scary even for adults.

Hi there- 2 questions: 1) are there age or height restrictions? My son is 11 and is 4’11. 2) is there transport to/from meeting place? Many thanks!

How is the traffic on the road? Do you safe as a bicyclist with vehicles on the road?

That's not something that was communicated to me. I'd suggest calling them directly.

Hi - We are staying up in Napili Shores. Do you pick us up here? Or are we expected to drive ourselves to your office at Haiku Road?
We only brought tropical clothes, so can you provide jackets? We all have long pants and good shoes. Family of 5 scheduled for 8/15 - ages 20, 22, 23, and Mom and Dad. We have some other activities in the afternoon, so what time should we expect to be back to Haiku Road? Thanks very much for your quick response. Michael

nonya62 is spot on. i'm 52 dad & did the same w/ my 21 yo son. keep eye on weather forecast in that exact area because it's more apt to rain up there than where you're staying. we experienced rain which took some of the fun out of our ride.

If you take the self-guided tour, it's completely at your own pace. Could take you 45 mins or could take you 3-4 hours to get down, depending on stops. It really just depends on what you want to make of the trip. We often stop in Kula for lunch and browsing through the Curtis Wilson Cost gallery. We also stop in Makawao to look through shops. That can add some time.
Add 60-90 minutes for the ride up the mountain in the bus. And, if the Makawao Rodeo is happening, maybe add another 90 minutes! Our tour up the mountain was long over July 4th weekend, but well worth it with our driver Bill and his stories/side tours.
Keep in mind that the guided tours they do now may last longer (best to call the shop for the expected length). And, any summit tours may take an extended period of time - early morning and higher elevation. Though, in the end, you may still start at the ~7,000 foot elevation. I don't think you can ride through the park anymore.
