About
The khukuri is the symbol of loyalty and Gurkha warrior, regarded as traditional to all hill tribes of Nepal, also a multipurpose knife can be used for shaping timber to chopping up meat and vegetables. The blade is of tempered steel, slightly curved and exceedingly sharp. The handle is usually of wood or buffalo horn. A nick in the blade close to the handle serves the purpose of preventing blood from reaching the handle and is also symbolic of the Hindu Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The blade is enclosed in a scabbard of wood and leather.
The Khukuri comes in different sizes but for this workshop you will be making a small(6 inch) blade. Take part in creating your own knife. The process implies cutting/hammering a raw piece of iron into the shape of the blade, grinding the blade and making the handle. (note that for safety reasons, the blade grinding will only be done by the host and we advise guests to stay clear of the sparks during this process). Take a Knife as a souviner.

- washington_wahine0 contributionsFantastic! What a great experience! Not only did I get to taste so many authentic Nepalese foods (at least 5 stops, many with multiple dishes) but we were taken on a fascinating “ back street” tour of Kathmandu. The stops were at tiny mom n pop places where you’d normally never go. Ate everything, portions were big, veggie options available everywhere. Best combination of food and walking tour that I’ve tried so far! Guide was cheery, fun, and knowledgeable.Written 1 November 2024

All of which I would have never found on my own. Swoyam also gave me lots of history about the places we were passing by. We passed through lots of neat little alleys and passage ways giving you a peak at a hidden Kathmandu. His English is great had no problem conversing with on lots of different topics . - Evelien v0 contributionsFood tour to Kathmandu's hidden placesWe booked our tour last minute, but they reacted immediately. We had an amazing private food tour through various hidden local places in Kathmandu. - Lorelei1230 contributionsFood, markets, temples, oh my!This is the best tour if you want secret food and see the markets at the same time! Tourist will never be able to find these places. Small little alleyways, where I was the only foreigner eating real Nepalese food. Come hungry, my guide even packed up the last place that I ate for dinner since I was so full. I even had them pick me up via taxi from my hotel so I didn’t have to worry about making those arrangements (Extra cost, but well worth it for convenience.) A great introduction to the country!Written 14 August 2024

After arriving in Kathmandu late at night, this experience was a fantastic way to spend our first full day.
Namrata was an excellent guide and translator, and made us feel very welcome from start to finish as well as helping us to understand and appreciate the culture. The forge set-up was very humble which only made the speed and quality of production all the more impressive. The chance to get hands-on in the process was a lot of fun and left us in awe of the skill of the craftsmen . We had a great time with everyone there and left with an incredible souvenir having sampled some very enjoyable local food and drink.
Namrata was so amicable that we decided to follow her on a bar crawl of Kathmandu later that night, which was also great fun.
We were a party of 4 British men in their 20s and would recommend this experience to pretty much anyone.

It is truly an unforgettable experience to witness the master blacksmith at work and craft your own khukuri knife under the supervision and support from guru Indra and the wonderful guide Swoyam. The studio is located at the home of the guru with the most authentic set-up and the warmest hospitality. Excellent communications with Namrata and Swoyam throughout. A hassle-free experience for you to focus on learning the craft itself instead of arranging all the transportation and communications with the master. Would highly recommend this workshop to travelers and craft lovers who are looking for one-of-a-kind experiences in Kathmandu.

What an amazing experience! Our guide Namrata and the skilled blacksmith Indra truly made this experience exceptional.
Namrata was a friendly and knowledgeable guide, set a welcoming tone for the day with her enthusiasm for the Khukuri knife and its cultural significance. She shared insights into local traditions, adding an extra layer of richness to the tour.
Indra was the master blacksmith with 40 years of experience, and was truly remarkable. His professionalism and dedication to the craft were evident, and he generously shared his knowledge, explaining the knife-making process with a genuine smile. Witnessing him transform raw material(piece of bus metal and horn of buffalo) into exquisite Khukuri knives was just amazing.
The camaraderie between Namrata and Indra added a personal touch to the experience, making it feel like we were part of a close-knit community of artisans.
Although the tour was one of the best I've had in Nepal, I wished Namrata could have delved more into the history and stories behind the Khukuri knife, given the ample time we had.

If you have any interest in knife making or just expert craftsmanship this half-day experience is for you. In this rustic workshop you will take a piece of steel and mold it into a functional keepsake khukri with the assistance of a true master! Pounding, grinding, polishing, sharpening, tempering and sanding are all hands on! A guide picked us up and took us to a neighborhood where the workshop is located, an interesting experience in itself! The finished product is fabulous-it slices paper just like ads for sharpeners online!

This was a really cool experience. We attended as a family and enjoyed learning about and witnessing this being done. We did get to help with parts of making the knife and it is not easy. You get to see how these knives are made, by hand, in a small home blacksmith studio. People stopped by from the community that wanted their knives sharpened, etc so this is legit and not just a tourist activity plus you get to keep your knife (put it in your checked luggage, well wrapped as it is very sharp). Such a unique item to help remember your time in Nepal. If you are on the fence about this, do it, these guys are the last blacksmiths in their family.

Wonderful afternoon making a gorgeous Kuhkri which I will treasure forever. Picked up by Guide who took me to the workshop and got busy hammering, grinding, sanding, shaping and polishing my piece of old scrap iron into my beautiful knife. They let you do as much or as little as you like, within reason. Would recommend this activity to anyone…

Khukuri making was one of the best activity we did in Nepal!. From a scratch metal seeing it turning into beautiful knife which we didn't even imagine it to be. Our guide and the host Indra are very awesome and working with Indra to make our knife is unforgettable memories and yes the best souvenir we are taking back home.

Great experience, especially for people who like craftsmanship and also do something themselves.
It is fascinating to see how scrap [the basic material is old leaf springs of buses] can be used to make such a beautiful knife. It depends on the experience of the "Blacksmith", who knows exactly what he is doing and what to do next with every stroke and every substep. Only with great experience can it be achieved to straighten the blade like this!
Actually a "must" for craftsmen !

Absolutely excellent. Our guide was excellent. He picked us up from the hotel and took us via taxi to our host. Our host was very knowledgeable and a true craftsman. We got to participate in the workshop lots and had a great time learning this ancient art which is slowly being left behind as the younger generations are not as interested in the skills. The workshop is done in the back of the host house and he introduced us to his family. I would highly recommend this experience.
