About
ChangChill, located in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand, started its journey in 2017. ChangChill (meaning “relaxed elephants” in Thai) is now ready to reopen its doors – offering a better life for elephants and a unique experience for visitors. the six resident female elephants the freedom to roam the valley, graze, and bathe in the river, mud and dust, while socializing with each other. Visitors are no longer encouraged to interact with the elephants, but are now given the chance to see how the elephants choose to spend their days in the forest. Observe elephants navigate the lush forest, learn about Karen hill tribe culture with local community members, or enjoy the breathtaking view from the elephant observation deck – it’s not only the elephants that get to “chill” here.

ChangChill - where elephants can simply be elephants. This is one of the only places in Thailand where visitors won’t be able to bathe with or feed the elephants: you hike through the jungle and just watch them in their natural habitat. Eating bamboo and walking around freely on their 8 hectare jungle lands. All six elephants have been rescued from the tourist entertainment industry and can now live the rest of their lives in peace and happiness - simply being elephants. They are beautiful, kind, smart creatures of their own who deserve nothing less than that. We had an amazing day with our guide Goi and I would really recommend this place to anyone visiting Chiang Mai. They highly rely on the entrance fees of visitors to make sure they can continue the amazing work that they do, so I think everyone should know about this place and visit if you can. It was worth every cent. 🐘💚

We had a wonderful time at Changchill. You go out for 1h30 in the woods to go find them in their natural habitat, and observe them from a reasonable distance to let them live freely. At Changchill the elephants are respected and that was the most beautiful way to see them, free and at peace. You don't get to touch or feed them because their will is respected. This place is one of the ONLY places recommended by the World Animal Protection to be really elephant friendly and where the wellness of the animal is paramount.

You can find precious informations about all the other so-called "Sanctuaries" (where the elephants in Chiang Chill come from !) by looking for the Elephant friendly tourist guide online (made by the WAP).

Make the right choice and don't go bathing or riding elephants elsewhere ! :)

A real privilege to experience elephants in such a natural environment. I never imagined we would be able to go so close while feeling completely safe. The staff obviously love and care greatly for the elephants, the sanctuary is new and they are still spreading the word but I imagine this will become the must see place. There’s 1.5 acres per elephant (6 live there) and they roam free during the day with their minders. No poking, hooks or making them do anything they don’t want. The families who own them have for generations, and now there is a way for them to earn an income while offering a happier life than the logging and tourist rides they were previously doing. The family hopes to buy more land, so they can rescue more elephants - but of course this requires tourists to visit. There is a limit of 30 people per day (3 groups of 10 that all go at seperate times) so it’s not to overwhelming for the elephants and a relaxed way to spend your day. This really is a must do!

Such a fun incredible experience. We were picked up from our hotel in the morning. Our guide, who was very knowledgeable, had taken us through the forest to track down the elephants. It was amazing to see the elephants in their own habitat roaming freely. The elephants would even come towards you sometimes, just have to respect their space.
Very ethical practices at chang chill. Other "sanctuaries" need to look at this organization as an example.
I would highly recommend this sanctuary.

Well organised trip by a friendly, knowledgeable team. The camp and day seems to be organised around the needs of the elephants, in particular the hands-off policy, in order to make it as ethical as possible. We got to see them in their natural environment, and still be close enough to see how wonderful these animals are.
A great experience and highly recommended.
