- ErinMonica0 contributionsHighly recommend this informative and beautiful tourThis was an excellent tour, and our guide, who is Karen, taught us so much about the history and current situation of the Karen in Doi Inthanon. The views were amazing and the homestay was so peaceful. Be prepared to get wet on the bamboo rafting!Written 26 May 2024
- bobhI7010ZS0 contributionsGuide + local guide (and his dog) were over and aboveI had enjoyed a wonderful overnight trip with Green Trails to a Karen village in 2018. This time a day trip: Hiking the Trails of Chae Son National Park. Thank you so much to Ata, our guide, for an amazing day. I would say it was the most complete and enjoyable trek I have experienced in my 11 years of travel to SE Asia. This included: The beauty of the mountain vistas. The knowledge that Ata and the local guide shared about the jungle, their culture and history. And a tremendous jungle lunch down to the creation from bamboo of all utensils and serving and cooking vessels. What a day!Written 12 March 2024
- froggy161870 contributionsOne Day Hill Tribe Photography TourWe took the one-day Hill Tribe Photography Tour with Chai as our tour guide, and it was excellent. We went to five or six different villages with our guide and driver, to remote locations we could never have found on our own. Chai spoke English, Thai, the Shan language, and several other hill tribe languages, and could communicate with the people in the villages. In each village, we saw 2 to 3 people dressed in their beautiful and intricate tribal costumes. Their regalia was pristine, colorful, well washed and beautifully taken care of--it seemed like the equivalent of seeing people in their "Sunday Best." We understand that they are paid for their time and showing off their clothing. There were also many hill tribe crafts for sale, I wish we'd brought more cash with us. My only recommendation is to bring more money, all in small bills (100 and 500 baht or smaller). There were so many beautiful things for sale--textiles, embroidery, bead work, and other items, made in the villages by the women who live there. The lunch was excellent, made over open fires, tastes and foods we hadn't had anywhere else. A truly great day.Written 6 March 2024
- 51larss0 contributionsTwo day hike to stay with the Karen people.Very well organized two day hike in Mae Wang. Luke was a very friendly and knowledgeable guide making it a perfect hike. Particularly was Luke also very good on history of the Karen people and nature in general.Written 24 January 2024
- BVVME50 contributionsA great way to get into the countryside and see something of village life.We did a 3 day trip with Green Trails which included walking, rafting and some waterfall swimming. The guide Nareng was very friendly and knowledgeable and we found the company very flexible - they agreed to adapt 1 day to fit in specific places I wanted to visit, and during the trip we could say if we wanted to spend longer or shorter somewhere. We slept 2 nights in Karen villages, I expected to be more in a Karen home, mixing with a Karen family and joining in their activities, but we were instead in separate sleeping accommodation and didn't really have contact with any people in the villages. We could observe, but not really join in or chat with, despite the guide being able to translate.Written 14 August 2023
- LaurenandMark0 contributionsTribal People of the North Day TourWe took the Tribal People of the North day tour with Luke and had an amazing experience! The first half of the hike to the tribal village was a long, steep journey but we stopped when needed and our guide carved walking sticks for us was very helpful. Our guide grew up in a hill tribe and shared his knowledge of the jungle flora and fauna with us. He even carved us cups from bamboo harvested during our hike which made a memorable souvenir! The second half of the hike was a decent into the village and less physically strenuous. Overall, it was a beautiful hike in the jungle and something we would not have been confident to do on our own. Someone of moderate fitness should be fine on this hike. Lunch in the village was memorable and delicious! We bought some sweet treats at the market we stopped at before the hike and give them to the kids in the village for a special treat. Be prepared to bring some Baht ($) to purchase some hand-crafted souvenirs from the villagers. They had some beautiful woven pieces and prices were very fair. You don’t have to spend a lot, even a little is appreciated. Afterwards we went to the Sticky Waterfall, which was a super fun way to end a sweaty, memorable day! We’ve never hiked *up* a waterfall before! It’s safe, and some ropes were installed at places to aid your climb. Prepare to get wet! Overall, we highly recommend this trip and opportunity to visit places and people well off the usual tourist path!Written 19 June 2023
- natashaa6610 contributionsNice placesIt was photographing tour in six villages. If I decided to choose again, I would choose one village, and not six villages on one day. Everything go quickly and it is not possible to make expression of those people and their lifestyle in that short time.Written 14 May 2023
- OlliePi20 contributionsAmazing Hilltribe Photography Tour!I would recommend Green Trails to anyone who is visiting Thailand and wants to see the authentic side of Chiang Mai. We opted for the Hilltribe Photography tour, but it was much more than just photo opportunities. The tour covered Karen, Lisu, Akha, Lahu, Palong and Hmong villages within the space of a day yet didn’t feel rushed whatsoever. We got to meet the people and talk with them. They showed us their traditional musical instruments and the Palong village even performed a dance with music over lunch (which was the best green curry I’ve ever had). We got to help out cooking lunch too. Tommy, our guide, was simply amazing! Coming from a Karen village himself, he was very culturally aware. He consistently ensured that everyone was comfortable and had their needs met. He was friendly and created a highly enjoyable group dynamic, keeping us laughing the whole way. I couldn’t have asked for a better guide and look forward to meeting him again when I go back to Thailand. Our driver was perfect too! (Sorry, I can’t remember his name) If you’re interesting in meeting the different hill tribes in northern Thailand, go with Green Trails. They know what they’re doing! Thank you for the great day out!Written 12 May 2023
- r44s0 contributionsAmazing experience of a lifetime! My husband and I went in this 3 day tour from Chiang Mai to Chiang Dao in Dec 2022. My goodness was it incredible! We had a tour guide and driver who took us everywhere. We did so much including elephant sanctuary, waterfalls, hiking to palong village, staying in the village where the village children performed for us and the tour guide made us food. The villagers were so nice. Also we went to caves, forest temples, hot springs, temple on top of a mountain, lots of markets, lots of explanations to all our questions with so much patience and care. Thanks so much Frans for organising it and thank you to our tour guide and driver for being incredible. It was the best, incredible experience of a lifetime which we will never forget. We took time to write this review as life got in the way but here I am. A must do when in Chiang Mai.Written 9 February 2023
- MaggieRiley0 contributionsFabulous tour of Northern Thailand with Green TrailsWe did an 8 day tour from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai with Green Trails, and had an amazing time! They worked with us to map out an itinerary that included all the things we were most interested in (elephants, cooking class, bike riding, etc), and the trip was totally seamless! We had a driver and a guide (Rung and Joe) who picked us up from the airport and they were excellent - knowledgeable and so kind. We saw and did so many things that we wouldn’t have without this tour, and didn’t have to think or plan which was lovely. It was also great value for hotel and so many activities. Would highly highly recommended Green Trails for exploring Northern Thailand.Written 24 January 2023
- ruthd7030 contributionsReal deal home stay with superb guideThis is a review for the two day one night home stay “Meet the Karen people of Mae Wang” We’ve been on home stays before that were so organized and fancy that they weren’t really home stays. This is the opposite and I mean that in the best way. It was only my husband and I with Jai - our excellent guide - so we got tons of personal attention. The trip could have had as many as ten people on it. We got lucky. Jai was personable, knowledgeable and generous - all around good company. The hike up to the village was steep-ish and beautiful with a stop at a waterfall. Jai stopped at one point to fashion us bamboo walking sticks, which really helped. Some people from the village met us at at the waterfall and kept us company on the way up. They were friendly and very interesting, and Jai had a wonderful rapport with them from earlier trips. Our home stay was very basic - with a steep walk down to a makeshift toilet. A lovely family lent us their home overnight. Since we slept over on Saturday night, and our home stay was across the street from the Catholic Church in the village, we had the added bonus of watching villagers gather in their finest for church. We were able to listen to the short service and got wonderful pictures. The walk down was very steep and hot, followed by a 45 minute river trip on a bamboo raft - a perfect way to end the tour. We were picked up and dropped off at our hotel in Chang Mai. Highly recommend.Written 21 January 2023
- sheettalc0 contributionsExcellent action filled tourOne of my favorite experiences in Chiang Mai! This tour was action filled with a hike, walk to the summit, tour of stupas, visit to a local market and waterfalls! Our guide was very sweet and knowledgeable. They were also great with dietary restrictions. They picked us up from our hotel on time. We had an amazing experience and would highly recommend!Written 26 November 2022
- AilC890 contributionsA fabulous day on: DOI INTHANON: HIKING THE NATURE TRAILSMy husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this day trip, it was jam packed. We hiked Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail, walked through the cloud forest, tasted (and bought!) coffee and walked through a Karen village, saw the brilliant Wachirathan Falls and visited the Twin Pagodas. Spectacular views, a brilliant guide and so much in a day. We were so pleased we went and would recommend itWritten 23 November 2022
- rubberscrapers0 contributionsAmazing, jam-packed dayWe did the one day Doi Inthanon hiking the nature trails and it was an amazing and jam packed day!
