What to expect
  • Meet a driver at your hotel in Old Hanoi for an 8 to 8:30am departure, then begin the 2-hour journey to Duc Port in an air-conditioned vehicle. You’ll have great views of the Red River Delta throughout the drive, flat valley bottoms with the backdrop of limestone cliffs. Upon arrival at Duc Port, board a sampan rowing boat for a leisurely drive down the Yen River—you’ll stop along the way to see the Pagoda of Representation, or Den Trinh. When you reach the base of Huong Tich Mountain, begin the 1- to 1.5-hour hike to the summit, following a step path up the slope. The Perfume Pagoda is not one shrine, but a series of temples and shrines built into the limestone cliffs, so you’ll have a lot to see along the way to the summit. At the top of the mountain you’ll find Huong Tich Cave and the Pagoda of the Perfumed Vestige, among the most important destinations for Vietnam’s Mahayana Buddhists. Pause for lunch in a local restaurant, then continue to a final pagoda, Thien Tru, which dates to the 17th century, then begin the return trip to Hanoi in the late afternoon. Note: It's also possible to take a cable car up Huon Tich Mountain (own expense).

17 day main portion of the tour was booked through CartOrange in Italy, which really has no clue as to what will happen in Asia. Our brand new tour guide had no idea what she was doing, and we suffered. The perfume pagoda experience is full of possible scams, and you must be aware. First scam is the slow row boat to reach the tram site on a cold and rainy day, and then they charge you a huge fee to return in a motorboat, then they invite all of their friends and tow back the row boats after a customer pays the fee. Second scam is hustlers telling you that there is no food unless you pre-book at a high price, and you are sent to a terrible place (see photos). Other problems include the schedules of the tram and operating hours of the temples, which must be respected, or the entire trip is for nothing. Our meek young guide was completely unaware, and we had to take over.

Dear JohnInItaly, Good morning from Go Asia Travel in Vietnam. We have read your review carefully. We are sorry that you have had a bad experience in a tour in Vietnam. However, there is something we would like to make clear: 1. We have looked your name up in our recent booking list but we have not found you yet. Could you tell me your booking code and name of the person in Go Asia Travel you contact so that we can check once again. We even can refund the tour to you in case you were not satisfied with our services. 2. We believe that we have trained our guides well, and they will always tell the customers about scams they may get in each places. We are surprised when hearing about the scam at the local restaurant. 3. In addition, CartOrange is NOT our partner in Europe. So we are in doubt that you may have confused Go Asia Travel with some other companies else, which have similar names. So, please contact us as we are trying to fix your problem with the tour. If the fault is from our company, we will take full responsibilities with you. Thank you for your time. Best regards,
