What to expect
Travel to Ho Chi Minh City after morning pickup from the port at Phu My or Lotus, relaxing in a comfortable climate-controlled private vehicle for the scenic two-hour drive. In the morning, you'll experience a classic Vietnamese art form: a water puppet show. Watch a short performance of this type of puppetry, which dates back to the 11th century and features lacquered wood puppets that appear to dance on the surface of a shallow indoor pool. Get an overview of Vietnam's diverse cultures at the National History Museum. Your guide shows you artifacts that reflect the evolution of Vietnam, from modern-day people back to the Cham and Khmer dynasties, and the Dong Son civilization from the Bronze Age. Enjoy traditional Vietnamese dishes for lunch at a local restaurant. Then step into your cyclo for a one-hour tour along Dong Khoi Street, the heart of old colonial Saigon and formerly known as Rue Catinat. Admire fine examples of French colonial architecture as you pay a quick visit to the Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office nearby. Get great photo ops of other classic colonial landmarks such as the Saigon Opera House and Saigon City Hall. Before your cyclo tour winds down, stop outside the Reunification Palace (aka Independence Palace), site of dramatic events during the 1975 Fall of Saigon that marked the end the Vietnam War. Your cyclo tour ends at one of the most liveliest markets in Ho Chi Minh City, Ben Thanh market. Have time to shop for souvenirs among a bounty of goods, then return in your private vehicle to your cruise terminal. Worry-free Shore Excursion: We will ensure your excursion ends with ample time for you to return to the Ho Chi Minh City port for your ship’s departure. In the extremely unlikely event your ship has departed, we will arrange for transportation to the next port-of-call. If your ship is delayed and you are unable to attend this activity, your money will be refunded. See our terms and conditions for full details.

Surprised after reading other glowing reviews
Mar 2019 • Couples
I was led to believe that if we gave our passport info, the guide would meet us at our ship. That didn't happen. We killed at least 15 minutes waiting. Then I asked another tour guide there if he could call the number for our tour. He called 3 times but got no answer. We decided that we would look outside the port gates and fortunately there was a shuttle bus running to the area just outside the port gates. There was a young man there with our names on a sign, so we went with him. It was clear pretty fast that he didn't speak any English. So we had a 2.5 hour ride to Ho Chi Minh City with no commentary on what we were seeing. He DID play some popular songs by English speaking artists (more on that later).

Eventually, we got to HCMC and met our guide. He worked with the U.S. military during the Vietnam war, so he knew a fair amount of English. Having said that, we could only understand about 60% of what he said. We met at a museum and went immediately to watch a water puppet show. That was ok, though nothing special. As a side note, later in our cruise we saw another water puppet show in Hanoi that was WAY better that this one. Our guide made sure to take us to the souvenir shop and encourage us to buy stuff. This was the beginning of a feeling through most of the tour that we were in an infomercial.

The guide left it to us to pick what we wanted to see in the museum. He offered minimal explanation of what we saw. Basically, he told us the same thing we could read on the exhibit plaques.

Our next stop was at a factory/showroom where they make Vietnamese lacquer art. A young man explained the process they use to make the art. Then we were shown into the showroom. Again, our guide encouraged us to buy stuff. We weren't interested.

Next we stopped at a Vietnamese coffee shop. I don't drink coffee (my wife does), but I'm told Vietnam is famous for it's coffee. We sat down at a table and were given a small cup of coffee for my wife, tea for me. While we drank our tea, one of the shop women stood about 2 feet away and stared at us - kind of like a vulture. I guess we were supposed to buy some coffee, but we disappointed them again.

The lunch stop was next and we had a good lunch.

After lunch, we had the 3 wheel pedicab ride (which was fun) from the restaurant to the Ben Thanh market. This place is HUGE with anything you can imagine for sale. Spent about 30 minutes there.

Then our guide said that he would leave us and our driver would drive us by the Central Post Office and Notre Dame Cathedral. I think I saw them, but we didn't stop and the driver never indicated when we were passing them.

Then we started the long ride back to the ship. This time it wasn't English speaking singers. It was native music and/or talk radio. I guess the opportunity to get money out of the tourists was past, so no need to butter them up.

In case you can't tell, we did not like this tour. Judging from the other reviews, it is highly dependent on how good your tour guide is. Our guide might be good if you are a Vietnam war veteran who wants to share war stories. If, however, you are looking for someone to explain the culture and significance of what you're seeing, this was the wrong guide. In addition, several times during the tour he asked us to be sure to give him a glowing review. We'll disappoint him on that one, too.

Cruise ship pickup didn’t happen
We booked, paid in full and twice confirmed the booking and still we weren’t picked up at the cruise port of Phu My after disembarking from the Sun Princess. Very disappointing experience.

After phoning the Bravo number we were given, eventually they sent a taxi to take us to Ho Chi Minh city and meet up with the guide at the Independence Palace.

The guide was good, young and enthusiastic about Vietnam. But unfortunately, I had my wallet stolen by pick-pockets at the Palace. I needed to be more careful and watch out for that. Be warned.

Lunch was supplied which was also good, but I ended up spending my time cancelling credit cards. The markets were great as long as you are OK bargaining with the locals.

After a bit of sight seeing we said goodby to the guide we headed back to Phu My and the ship with the driver. It’s a quite a long drive and the driver who didn’t speak a word of English managed to get lost trying to find the cruise terminal. Quite frustrating and tense as we knew the ship would leave without us.
Anyway we made it back to the ship eventually. Overall a less than perfect experience.
