About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- connorpV7404OE0 contributionsNice guide, nice parkBooked through Beyond Escapes. Anjana was very professional, prompt in pick up and drove through pouring rain to get me to the park. After park visit (separate guide), Anjana promptly took me back to hotel to dry off and rest, and arranged a later time for tea plucking experience. Nice guide, nice park.Written 26 November 2024
- 742harrietp0 contributions5* birdwatching trip - all expectations exceeded!I can't recommend this enough - as an avid birdwatcher I was looking forward to seeing some Sri Lankan avifauna. Aruna was so knowledgeable, helpful, and also spoke fantastic English. You could tell he had such a passion for nature and deep knowledge that he wanted to share. I didn't bring binoculars with me but I didn't feel like I needed them given the birds I saw were mostly in flight and the mangroves were very dense. I was expecting to see 5 or so different species, but in the end I counted 27 (and water monitors and monkeys too). The wetlands are vast and the boat was absolutely necessary for getting around some of the quieter parts. Even for non-birdwatchers this could be a lovely calm break in peaceful surroundings!Written 27 October 2024
- SeanAndy0 contributionsFantastic Family Heritage Trip w Mr. CeasorI planned a return trip to Sri Lanka, my native country, after 50+ years. I had my husband, two sons and their partners with me. I didn't quite know what to expect from this trip. Beyond Escapes, after some initial communication difficulties, came through for me for a 10 day tour with hotels, car and a driver. They worked with me to adjust the itinerary to my needs, change the hotels as I requested and also pointed out some travel logistics related to air travel. From the initial pick up at the airport to everything in between, our driver Mr. Ceasor made it so relaxing, fun and exciting. First of all his English was excellent; his knowledge of the country, history and politics was helpful and interesting. He was always on time, but always relaxed with the “you are on holiday” attitude, so we were able to set our schedule as we went along. We’re foodies, and Mr. Ceasor’s access to the local food scene and restaurants was really wonderful, especially for those in our group who were native Sri Lankans! We loved the way Ceasor would stop at a local restaurant (at our request) and find us a table, order us all types of Sorties/Rotis, explain what was in each and let us dig in. We felt so much more relaxed and comfortable sampling the ‘real’ Sri Lanka than if we had tried doing this without Ceasor and Beyond Escapes. Also, this was our first time traveling with a tour company and driver – usually my husband and I rent a car and figure things out as we go. But we are so glad we chose to hire Beyond Escapes and Ceasor – they really made the trip so much easier, relaxing and incredibly fun. So, if you are looking for a stress free first time experience in Sri Lanka, I highly recommend Beyond Escapes and especially Mr. Ceasor for a fabulous time. It’s well worth it!Written 10 August 2024
- robertorL4571EV0 contributionsColombo; Local Market Tour & Cooking Demo with LunchOn my second day of exploration, I visited a countryside local family house to learn how to cook and savor typical Sri Lankan 🇱🇰 dishes. We went to the local market where we handpicked the fresh vegetables, fruits, and the meat ingredients for our meal. Under the guidance of the mother of the family, I learned some secrets of creating traditional Sri Lankan dishes. The driver and the entire family made feel like it was my home. If you come to Colombo, I highly recommend Aktivitar to book this amazing tour.Written 10 August 2024
- NimaliD30 contributionsHighly recommendWe recently booked via beyond escapes, and my experience was wonderful. The staff were exceptionally friendly and ensuring all our needs were met promptly. The hotel rooms were clean, comfortable, and well-equipped. The location is perfect, close to major attractions. The breakfast was amazing. Overall, I highly recommend Beyond Escapes.Written 8 July 2024
- R1830RAdorothym0 contributionsTerrible Experience - Yala Overnight SafariWe went with a group on an overnight safari adventure in Sri Lanka. Beyond Escapes was consistently late at every itinerary point --- Late to pick us up on the first day; late arrival to the lunch at Leopard Nest; late to take us to the dinner; late to take us back to the hotel for the night; late picking us up the next day -- and so late that we were not able to stop for a lunch which we PRE-PAID and I have yet to receive any refund for the money we paid for that lunch. I understand being a little late due to traffic and other unforeseeable situations, but this was every event. The lunch on the first day at Leopard Nest was held outdoors in temperatures over 90 degrees. It was miserable! The dinner was at a beach location and, while the sun set, it was still unbearably hot and yet there was a bonfire going as well. We were late going into the Yala park, so we didn't get as much time to enjoy the safari (and the safari was the main reason we booked this trip) as everyone had to leave when the park closed. I If I could give Beyond Escapes a zero rating, I would.Written 3 July 2024
- BridgetK5120 contributionsTreetop magicOne of the highlights of our holiday. If you want something completely different and get back to nature, this is the place for you. Some of the rooms are built in treetops with incredible views across the jungle. Our experience waking up at dawn and listening to the incredible sounds of the jungle coming to life was magical. We even heard an elephant trumpeting. We had two unforgettable meals - one dinner and one breakfast. The dinner was a barbeque in a clearing lit by flaming lanterns. Our table was a huge slab of stone and we felt like a king and queen. The barbeque was wonderfully well cooked and arguable the best meal we had in Sri Lanka. The breakfast took place on top of a rock in a clearing in the jungle while out on a nature ramble. Again, a unique experience which we will never forget. The staff couldn't have done more for us and made us feel very special. We will certainly return.Written 23 April 2024
- michellemP6391SO0 contributionsThis was Awesome, highly recommendThis was a great tour, pickup was on time to Hotel, travellled out to Yala, a couple of stops one included our driver buying us water and snacks for the journey which was expected but very much appreciated. We saw lots of animals on our tour, this was the kids favourite adventure on our holiday to Sri Lanka. The beach BBQ was a highlight for me, the food was great, slightly over catered I thought but was great after an arvo Jeeping around, well worth the $$$Written 22 April 2024
- Companion649681822440 contributionsOverall a good experienceOur guide/driver was very pleasant and respected our wishes about everything we wanted to do. He even called his daughter to help us find a song we liked. The trip also promised 4 star hotels and it really delivered beyond our expectations in this regard. The hotels were very good and well situated, with good food and staff. The only downside with the tour was that some of the activities felt a bit like tourist traps, hence the 4 stars instead of 5. We appreciated that we got to see a lot of things in a limited time, and that the return back to Colombo was included in the tour.Written 9 April 2024

- Jmahg0 contributionsChallenging journey, Helpful staff, disappointing experienceThis was a challenging visit from the start and turned out to be quite an adventure which we were not expecting. There had been continued heavy rain for a few days which made the road to the hotel impassable even with 4x4 vehicles so we had to walk in mud and a rutted road for a short distance. Our luggage was carried across for us by a hard working team. We were well welcomed by staff but again it was a challenge to get to our treetop suite because there were only muddy paths with a few paving slabs here and there. To go out again we had to reverse our travel in! We had lunch on arrival with no choice. All the food was set menu and be aware that they may not be able to cater for special diets. We went back out straight after lunch for the Yala Safari. Unfortunately due to heavy rain the main part had been closed and we had over an hour journey to get to the part of the park which was open. Our driver /guide tried to find as many animals as possible in this smaller area but we missed the bears, leopards and only saw elephants on the approach road. It took a long time to arrive back and we had to negotiate the walk between vehicles in the dark. We had to go straight to dinner. A BBQ which was OK. Although wine and beer was included it was not topped up. Rooms were spacious with an open wardrobe. Air con but just a sheet on the bed and poor pillows. There was a shower unit in the bathroom which was tricky to use. Our sleep was interrupted by outside noises so maybe pack some ear mufflers. Unfortunately our morning excursion to have breakfast by the lake was cancelled due to flooding but initially we were not told this. There was certainly an element of poor communication but all the staff worked hard to make our stay as memorable and comfortable as they could.Written 16 January 2024

This is my second tour with Beyond Escapes. This time we looked at many options available online and found this lovely tour. Hotels were fabulous. Especially the Rainforest hotel and Leopard Nest. Our guide was excellent. He went out of his way to make our tour a so special one. The staff at Leopard Nest was so professional and friendly. It was the highlight of this tour. Ella is lovely too. This is really a very unique experience with so much of interesting activities. River Safaris, Nature trails, Game drives, hiking, trekking, whitewater rafting and many more interesting activities are included in this tour package. We enjoyed a memorable week with Beyond Escapes. Thank you very much for all your service.

There are so many things to say about this vacation that it makes it difficult to even write a review. I am going to try to break it down in three parts. The tours and activates, our driver and tour guide, and the company that operates the tours.
As it says in the description, this is a wildlife and adventure tour. If you are just looking for a relaxing easy going sightseeing vacation then this is not the tour for you. There will be a lot of hiking, there will be a lot of driving from place to place (driving in Sri Lanka is part of the Adventure), and yes you will see tons of animals. The tour starts off very calm in a nice beach resort. The first activity is a calm ride down the Madu River. The Madu River can be fun if you keep your expectation of the actual boat ride low and are open to doing more than just sitting in the boat. The boat driver will give you the option of stopping at Cinnamon Island, stopping to get a fish foot massage, stopping at the Buddhist temple, and stopping to get a coconut to drink from. I recommend doing them all and it will be a blast; along the way you will see beautiful birds and giant fruit bats. The second activity will take you into the rain forest. The rain forest is beautiful but keep in mind it is a real rain forest and there are real snakes, leeches, monkeys, insects, and did I mention lots of leeches. You will hike into the rainforest (2 to 3 hours of hiking, much of it uphill) and it will be great fun, but wear appropriate clothing or at least purchase leech socks. After that you will have two incredible days of being on safari. Lots of elephants, and tons of wildlife to see. Yala is by far one of nicest camping experiences you will ever have. This is luxury camping with some of the best food you will have on this trip. Once the safaris are over, get ready to do some serious hiking. Next stop Ella!! In Ella you will hike up little Adams peek and over the nine arch bridge. This is about 4 hours of hiking. The views are well worth it. Ella is by far one of the most spectacular places you will ever see. The next morning, get your hiking boots back on. It will be another 4 hours of hiking difficult terrain in Horton Plains. The last activity that you will do is river rafting. This is a fun activity but extremely short with only a few rapids. Keep your expectations low on the length of the ride and be prepared to swim. Your guide will try to make it as fun as possible and that includes you jumping out of the raft at the end, and floating some mild rapids on your back. The activities will be adventures, exhausting, and most of all...Extremely fun. The only thing I would change would be skipping Horton Planes and having another night in Yala or Ella.
Our driver and guide was Shalika Fonseka. I can't say enough about this guy. He was awesome. He went out of his way to make sure we had a great time. He spoke a fair amount of English and was extremely accommodating. Not everything went perfect. There were washed out roads, an arrival mix up at the airport, the itinerary and hotel bookings were different when we arrived, hotels were not always ready for us, and through it all Shalika adapted or improvised and made the trip great. He pushed us to do activities that I probably wouldn’t normally do (like eating local food with our hands, and putting a live cobra around my neck). He made suggestions of additional activities when we had the time (like visiting a turtle sanctuary and taking a ride in a tuk tuk). Sahalika understood what we were interested in doing throughout the trip and made it happen even when it wasn’t part of the itinerary (he even didn’t even mind when he had to wait on us, because we added an extra safari in Yala without telling him).
The tour company is where they lost a star from me. Their communication was poor and they did things that I consider to be bad business practices. The first thing we noticed is that when they confirmed my booking I was sent an itinerary (same as in the description on the web site in October). When we arrived two months later...some of the hotels on the itinerary had changed. If they had just communicated this to us, it probably wouldn’t have been an issue. It just felt like a bait and switch since some of the hotels were not exactly what I expected and seemed subpar. The second issue I had was managing my arrival. I knew I would have an early flight and arrive at the first hotel early. It was my fault to assume that I could have the hotel hold my luggage, relax on the beach, and use the resort facilities until a room was ready. The tour company had my arrival time two months in advance and choose not to communicate with me until less than 1 day prior to arrival. They said via e-mail that since I would be arriving at the hotel at 5am I would need to purchase another night stay at my expense. The problem with that was, my flight (with time changes and flight duration) from the US to Sri Lanka is a two days travel. I never got the last minute communication (even though with 1 day notice that would not have mattered). It would have been nice for them to let me know that the hotel would not allow this and that for an additional fee the tour company would be happy to help me reserve an additional night stay at my expense. When I arrived at the hotel, they did not want us there until check in time and they had no other rooms available for purchase. Thanks to the quick thinking of our driver Shalika, we were able to go start our adventures early (although very tired and not too happy with this company). The last issue that we had was that they were pushing me to review the trip half way through. I don’t mind being asked, but it just felt like they were pushing for good review before I noticed the switch in hotels and the quality of the stay at the end. I will give them credit for putting together a very exciting and adventurous tour, and for the hiring a quality driver.
In the end I was extremely happy with my vacation and I had a wonderful time. It was a once in a life time experience. If you are open to adventure, don’t mind hiking in some of most beautiful places on earth, love wildlife, and can handle the adventure of Sri Lanka’s roads…then this is the tour for you!!! You will never regret the experience.

Dear Sir, We highly appreciate your time and effort in reviewing this tour. This is one of the most selling tours in Viator that has not received a review. We are very much glad that you were the first one to review this tour. When we got your new flight details at the beginning, we have misread it and noted it as next day arrival as you have booked a 7 nights tour. When we checked with the airline two days prior to arrival, we revealed that you were arriving early in the morning on 24th December. We tried communicating to you about early check in, but was not able to get through to you as you were flying. As an option, we asked our driver cum guide to do whatever clients want to do on this day to make you comfortable. We are very happy to note that the guide has done it very well.
As this was the peak season, one hotel was not available at the time of booking. We tried our best to give the same hotel by wait-listing the same until the last moment. As we were not able to get the booking confirmed in this hotel, we provided you the best available option.
We had sold this tour more than 100 times during the past. Most of the clients were very happy but never got a review. That's the reason why our staff have mentioned regarding a review. We really did not want to get a good review by ending this tour badly. We apologize if you felt that we were trying to get a review with an intention of covering the hotel change in Ella.
At last, we are very much happy that you have given a very good insight about this tour and the real experience that the clients can get if they book this tour. We wish to welcome you again to Sri Lanka soon. All the very best !

Great time with a great guide through the mountains full of adventure. We were able to reach most beautiful mountains with the morning breeze. Guide did his best to make sure not to miss a single fact by explaining all of it. Leopards in yala & Elephants in udawalawa were superb. Highly recommond this adventure for a life time experience.

Word "superb" cant explain the execution and well planned week in the wild by beyond escapes. It was a great experience with the wild. All the hotel which we stayed was good. specially leopard nest and rain forest eco lodge were exceptional locations. We were very lucky to witness leopards in yala , birds in sinharaja rain forest and elephants. The tour was full of different experiences. Our chauffeur was very kind to fullfill our requests and gave us full details about every location. we highly recommond this tour.

We booked this tour with Beyond Escapes for our first visit to Sri Lanka. We asked the company to construct an active tour which included hiking, the tea country, a train ride, a safari in Yala National Park, and some beach time at the end for our kids, ages 12 and 10. To keep the review short, I'll put it into three categories: activities, accommodation and driver.
The main activities, all of which were good or great were the Horton's Plains hike, train from Nuwaraelia to Ella, safari in Yala National Park, and whale watching in Mirissa. The Horton's Plains hike was excellent - 3-4 hours to complete the circuit with great scenery and some wildlife. The train was a real adventure.... we paid one dollar for our entire family for the five hour trip in third class. It was packed and standing room only - would recommend getting a spot by the door. Best to be on the right side at the beginning and then left side for the second half. The safari at Yala Nat'l Pk was the highlight of the trip because of the personal service of the crew at Leopard Nest Camp Site. We recommend them highly and I've added a more detailed review under hotels. The whale watching in Mirissa was disappointing because of the masses chasing one whale, and the length of time taken to get to the deeper waters where the whales can be found. If you have a chance to do whale watching elsewhere this may be a better option. Had nice views of a blue whale once we got into deeper waters.
Accommodation: The hotels chosen by the company were all excellent except for one, and that was still average, but with good food. Especially liked the Jetwing in Negombe and Mountain Heavens in Ella in addition to the campsite at Leopard Nest. I've reviewed all the hotels separately.
Driver: Our driver had the chance to be an ambassador for Sri Lanka as it was our first visit to the country. We were looking for him to show us his homeland and give a personal touch. Unfortunately he was a major disappointment. He seemed unsure of himself and continually asked us what we wanted to do. There was little in the way of him adding insights to the culture of his homeland but rather only drove us from place to place. At times he tried to talk us out of activities when we realized we would have to make our own suggestions, by saying the destination was closed or not worthwhile. He tried to talk us out of the train ride from Nuwaraelia to Ella. At Dondra Lighthouse, we insisted, and enjoyed a walk around the grounds despite being told it was not open. In the end we realized that we would have to research in Lonely Planet and then make suggestions for the day's activities. I see this as a great failing for the driver and the company. We would have liked to embrace the culture and learn more about the people of this beautiful land.
In summary, Sri Lanka has much to offer and is so worth a visit. Now that we are at home we have many positive memories but all feel it could have been a better trip.

Dear Sir,
Thank you very much for review. We have noted all your comments and noted that we have given you a very good tour to match with your requirements. We always go an extra mile to make our guests happy and collect very good memories before they leave the country. We noted that you have highly appraised the crew at Leopard Nest that is owned by Beyond Escapes. This is the level of service that we have throughout our organisation.
Unfortunately, some of the Drivers / Chauffeur guides do not understand the importance of customer satisfaction. We always select the guides based on their experience and skills but some of the guides do not provide their service consistently at the best level. We have taken initiatives to correct this and occupy only the guides who can provide a good service consistently. This will be very much helpful for us to provide a more professional service to our future clients.
Thank you very much for choosing us to spend your vacation in Sri Lanka. All the very best!
