About
Our 3 days tour to Petra and Wadi Rum from Eilat allows exotic Middle Eastern landscapes an in-depth visit of the two most iconic wonders in Jordan. After pick up from your accommodation in Eilat, you will cross the border into Jordan, and make your way to Petra along the desert highway. Petra is also known as the rose-red city, a name it gets from the wonderful color of the rock from which many of the city’s structures were carved. The Nabataeans buried their dead in intricate tombs that were cut out of the mountainsides and the city also had temples, a theater, and following the Roman annexation and later the Byzantine influence, a colonnaded street, and churches. In addition to the magnificent remains of the city, human settlement and land use for over 10,000 years can be traced in Petra, where great natural, cultural, archaeological and geological features merge.

Things you need to know, valid for other tours as well
Feb 2020
Overall, the experience was quite positive, except for a few things that are not mentioned in the tour description. I was staying in Eilat, and decided to take the tour. First thing to know, you MUST spend at least 2 days in Petra (the place is huge and worth at least 2 days). The best part of the tour was when left to myself the second day to explore Petra at will (see my review of Petra). The desert - Wadi Rum - is amazingly beautiful (a must do), but see below ...
I tried to compare the different tour operators, and they propose the same itinerary (and the same price), 340$, including the tax exit. Note that you need to spend at least 2 nights in Jordan not to pay the 60$ visa. What none of the companies tell you is that you must pay 10 dinars to exit Jordan if you spent less than 3 nights in Jordan. One of the irritating hidden costs, which are not mentioned.
Apart from Desert Eco Tour, they all have a standard program. Given the good reviews of Desert Eco Tours, I contacted them first. But they charge 520$ + 125$ of taxes (they don't mention the Jordan tax either) for 2 days, i.e. 545$ as compared to 280$. I don't think that the difference is justified. In any case, they never replied to my requests of information, and thus I chose Fun Time (the only one which answered).
Standard program. All tours have a big bus that goes to Petra from Eilat in the morning, and comes back, every day. Whichever tour you take, you'll end in this shuttle. The shuttle has stops in various places to pick up passengers who happened to have booked from different places (e.g. Aqaba, the border city, because its airport has many low costs flights from Europe). So, you'll have people joining along the way. You may end up doing the same thing. For ex, we boarded the shuttle at the end of the second day in Petra, and were dropped at the branching point to go to Wadi Rum with another transport.
The bus stops at several places for restrooms ... which happen to be souvenir shops. Part of the deal, they want you to spend money. Irritating, you lose time, but all tours do that.
The first day, you end in Petra with the guide (Ali, very funny with his Welcome to the desert leitmotiv). After the tour, you have a "late" lunch around 4 pm (very filling and quite good, you won't need dinner, which is not included!). Then, the one day tour go back (with previous day two day-tour), and they drop you at a hotel. We stayed at the Al-Anbat, basic OK hotel. It is very high on the hill overlooking the city (nice view) but very far from the entrance of the site. You need to take a shuttle, which leaves when there are 4 people. The shuttle is free when you have 2 days on Petra for the second day, but NOT free if you want to go to Petra by night the first day (really worth it, magic and romantic). A taxi would cost 5 dinars if you are a local, at least 10, for a foreigner.
Note the hotel offers expensive 30$ of massage + hammam (10 minutes massage), very expensive for the country, but nice anyway (very good before the night show).
Breakfast is poor in the hotel. But you can make yourself cheese sandwich for your day in Petra if you don't want to spend time in onsite restaurants. Lunch is not included in the package.
When you are back, you go the hotel, wait there, and they'll transport you to the "late"lunch place, where you'll board the shuttle.
After the compulsory souvenir shop, you'll board a minibus to the Bedouin camp, which is nothing like a camp, but more like a camping. The package includes a "tent", with shared bathroom and shower (2 for the whole camp!). You can have private "tents", but that will cost you a LOT extra. Dinner is included.
The third day, you'll start the 4x4 desert drive at 9 am. This is a bit of a rip off. They do indicate 2h drive. We spent 1:20 before being back. In the 1:20, 2x15 min were spent in a desert souvenir shop, properly located at nice places. The 50 min of true wandering were nevertheless fabulous. It is so beautiful, and the only thing we regret is not spending more time in the desert.
Then, you are transported to Aqaba, with a so called visit of a city. This is a lie. They stop you at a souvenir shop for 15-30 min. They they walk you to a restaurant 5 min away (lunch is not included!) and then take you to border. The visit was to show you en passant (no stopping) the different hotels (why is that important?) and the king's palace.
All in all, not bad, nothing to complain about.
These tours are cheap, perhaps for a reason.
Final rip off, also desert eco tour. The exit visa costs 35$, not 65$ they all make pay you.
I guess you can do a two day tour to Petra all by yourself. You don't need anybody to cross the borders; and there are buses to go to the borders.
In conclusion, you can use them knowing the caveats.

A horrible experience
Dec 2019 • Friends
A horrible tour company. Fun Time is a cheat. We were put on the bus with no explanations as to what we would do. It was a total chaos. The guide openly disgraced the tourists and yelled or mocked at us. The hotels were terrible. We were kept in Eilat for five hours to wait for other groups. Their drivers are tired due to long hours of driving . It was unsafe to go with this company. They put different people from different groups on the same bus at the sacrifice of tourist’s valuable time. At the Wadi Rum camp, we had to pay $30 each person in order to “upgrade” to a room with heating in order not to suffer from the winter cold. The time spent at the sites was short, compared with the long hours on the road and in waiting. Unless you want to suffer and be ripped off, never sign up with this company . I just wonder why the regulators do not crack down on the low quality and misleading business practices of this company.

Positiv: tour guide Eli (only first day) was very competent and told us a lot about Jordans and Petras history. Transport and border crossing in Eilat was well organized.
Very cheap price for a tour like that.

Negativ: You will feel the disadvantages of the cheap price.
Lunch in restaurant was ok, but you have to pay all drinks extra and they are extremely expensive.

Hotel in Petra was very bad (3 stars). Tour group got the worst rooms, directly under the restaurant, loud chair moving noise at breakfirst and dinner time. Damaged furniture and equipment in the room. Never again.

2nd day: transport from hotel to Petra visitor center. Free time till 4 p.m.. Transport to Wadi Rum. Don't expect a real Beduine camp, its a lodge. Night spent in a kind of tent. But was ok, tents are situated in a garden around the restaurant, clean, nice to see.

3rd day: Jeep tour Wadi Rum, 3 hours, was good. Transport to Aquaba then was bad organized. Small mini bus for 9 people and luggage. Dangeros.

Conclusion: If you want to see much for less money take it and live with the bad things. Otherwise take another tour, spend more money and have more comfort hopefully.
