      Alright
Alright then, gather 'round, because I've got a story about Red Cap Walking Tours in La Paz, Bolivia. Now, picture this: I've just landed in what feels like the highest city in the world - literally, not figuratively, because I'm sure there's still some place in the Himalayas that's got it beat. But La Paz? It's like stepping onto the set of a sci-fi film where the air's so thin, you think you've accidentally taken up smoking again. So, I sign up for this Red Cap Walking Tour, thinking, "How hard can walking be at this altitude?" Very, apparently. But let's get to the review, shall we? The Tour: First off, the guides. They're like local superheroes without the capes but with red caps - very subtle branding. Our guide, let's call him Max because that was his name, was a walking encyclopedia but with the charisma of someone who's been through the wringer of Bolivian politics and come out the other side with a PhD in storytelling. Knowledgeable? Check. Entertaining? Double check. The Sights: We started at San Pedro Prison - not exactly the best place for a picnic, but fascinating. It was like walking through the plot of "Marching Powder" but with fewer chances of getting shanked. Then, the markets - witches included - because apparently, in La Paz, everyone's into a bit of magic, which is just the kind of nonsense you need when you're gasping for air. The food tour part? Oh, that was a revelation. Imagine eating something that looks like it's been through a blender but tastes like heaven. And then, there's the cable car ride - or as I like to call it, the Bolivian roller coaster with less screaming. The Experience: Now, here's the kicker. These tours aren't free anymore, which is a bit like being told you have to pay for air up here. But for what you get, it's a bargain. You learn about the city, the culture, the history, all while trying not to pass out from the altitude. The Crowd: You meet all sorts on these tours. From the backpackers who've seen too many sunsets and lost their sense of direction to the retirees who think they're on a pilgrimage. Score: 8 out of 10 - because even though it's brilliant, you still might want to pack an oxygen tank. And remember, the tour ends with a shot of Singani, which might just make you forget you're in one of the highest cities on Earth... until you try to walk home. So, if you're in La Paz and fancy a stroll through the surreal, Red Cap Walking Tours is your man... or woman... or guide with a red cap. Just don't forget to tip - they're the ones helping you navigate this mad, beautiful mess.

Tour full of information but with delay
We had a wonderful and interesting tour of La Paz with Red Cap. Unfortunately, it started 45 minutes late. Our guide was late and informed the group via WhatsApp 5 minutes before the tour started. This was a big disadvantage for us as the meeting point was right in front of a big prison where we felt a bit unsafe and we didn't know when the guide would arrive. The tour itself was really good and full of interesting facts about the city, including some urban myths. We also had the chance to try some local fruits at the market which was really nice. All in all, we can only recommend this company and the tour and hope that we were just a bit unlucky with the delay.

      Excellent guide, fascinating culture
I was lucky enough to be the only person on this tour and receive a private tour from Marisol. She was phenomenal with her guidance through the public transport of the bus and teleferico, but it was her explanations of culture and religion in the cemetery and market that kept me captivated. I enjoyed getting off the beaten tourist path to really dig into La Paz and its people, and would highly recommend!

Fantastic Tour, esp for the price!
Amara led us on what was essentially a free walking tour of the downtown highlights, and she provided outstanding insight into life in La Paz. From the unique situation at San Pedro prison to the food market to learning about the religious practices of the Witches Market to modern political history, she covered it all with approachable detail. It's a perfect way to start your time in La Paz with some context before your own explorations. Highly recommend and do remember to tip your guide. That's the real cost of admission and totally worth it!

And the book and movie recommendations about Bolivia, amazing 👏 Denise was really knowledgeable, friendly and a great guide! The places we went on the tour were very interesting.

      Fantastic!
This was an amazing walking tour! Whilst La Paz is naturally a very interesting city, Denise made this so fun. She was funny, knowledgeable and just all round brilliant. She also did a very good job at making sure everyone was always safe. Thanks so much for a great afternoon!

Best introductory tour to La Paz
My son and I took this tour our first day in La Paz. Denise was an amazing tour guide; she is friendly, funny, and full of interesting stories about La Paz culture and history. I learned so much in this short time but didn’t ever feel rushed. Would 100% recommend this tour!

Great tour to get accustomed to La Paz
Great tour with local Denise. Very funny and engaging rundown of each of the key inner-city areas. She spoke great English and gave us a really good rundown of key parts of La Paz (witches markets, Spanish side of town, inner-city jail!). Would recommend! Maybe even a longer tour would be better

      Nice intro to Bolivian culture
This was a great entry to both Bolivian food culture and life overall as our guide was really knowledgeable, and answered plenty of questions with perfect English and a lot of knowledge. We started in the couple of food markets followed by a few restaurants while seeing the evening life of La Paz and learning about Bolivian culture. Nut soup was my favorite and had that again today. I'd recommend ordering a multivitamina without sugar as it's better that way. There will be plenty of food but to avoid waste you may tell the guide if you want a smaller portion or skip one of the places.

      Good tour, great guide
Great guide who had perfect english and was nice and concise. Lots of walking and saw most of the main points of the city. Main square was closed which was annoying

Perfect tour to get to know the Bolovian Cuisine and Culture!
I’m really happy with this tour. Honestly, it could not have been any better. Not only was the food excellent and diverse, but also the tour guide is very kind and happy to answer any question about the food or the country! I can only recommend it, it’s the perfect start to discover La Paz and Bolivia in general. Kind regards from Germany.

Don't eat before the tour 😁
On our second day in La Paz we went on an amazing food tour organized by Red Cap and lead by our guide, Daniel. On the tour we tried a lot of different foods and he showed us where to find his favorite food-spots. He was really nice and his English was perfect! Can highly recommend going on the red Cap Food and beer tour while in La Paz!

      Great introduction to Bolivian food
Great opportunity to try local food and drinks on the street, at a market and in restaurants. Local guide who was able to answer all of my questions and I left with a very full belly! I would recommend skipping lunch and pacing yourself on the tour so you can try everything!

Daniel was an amazing, knowledgeable, and fun tour guide! We had a fantastic time taking the cable car and the minibuses around El Alto, learning about the cholets and the people who built them. We also loved learning about how Aymaran culture permeates the fabric of everyday life and rituals in El Alto. We would definitely do this tour again, and highly recommend it for anyone interested in indigenous cultures, architecture, city life, and spending time with a local to the area.

I did the Cholet architecture tour in El Alto with Christian - who was an excellent & thoughtful guide. What an amazing way to explore El Alto city through its unique history & buildings. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen the combination of colours & aesthetic quite like it. As a plus - travelling via cable car, collectivo, taxi and by foot allowed me to see large markets and areas of El Alto I wouldn’t have seen otherwise. Strongly recommend for anyone with any sort of interest in design, architecture or the evolving contemporary Andean identity.

I really enjoyed this tour, it was great to see more of El Alto as well as to see and understand the origins and purpose of the Cholets. Getting to see inside one of the Cholets was really special, especially to see the interior design and architecture. The best part of the tour was all of the detail that Max provided about the Cholets, the symbolism in their design and the broader indigenous culture. He went out of his way to make the tour interesting, unique and fun. I would definitely recommend this tour!

Cristian the guide is great! Extremely friendly and interesting and made a big effort to take us in to a cholet. As an architect and sold as an architecture tour I felt it was lacking in more detailed information specialised on architecture and was more of just walking around. For example talking to the architect to understand where and why the style started, sharing some floor plans of the buildings, explaining the construction system and process and used materials...

This tour was fantastic, our guide Chris was extremely knowledgable and flexible when we wanted to look around El Alto. This tour also included essentially a walking tour of El Alto and Teleferico (cable car). Enjoyed talking with Chris a lot and would definitely recommend Red Cap.

Fabulous tour to see some cholets and mansions in the El Alto area. Great to walk and take public transportation through unfamiliar neighborhoods with a knowledgeable local guide. We weren't able to see inside any of the cholets, but managed to include a brief stop at the El Alto Condominio Wiphala, a cluster of several highrises painted by Roberto Mamani Mamani. Spectacular.

This was an excellent, entertaining and informative tour. Our tour guide Max was very passionate about the subject of the cholets and offered many very interesting insights into the cultural background and context behind the design of this particular kind of architecture. This isn't your average architecture tour - rather Max talked about many different aspects of the cities of El Alto and La Paz, the indigenous cultures of Bolivia, and their various lifestyles and social issues. We learnt so much. Thanks Max, we had an amazing time.

This was a fantastic experience! The guide was very knowledgeable and made this a fun day. My only suggestion is to add the time and fitness level to the description of the tour. There is a lot of walking involved at 4,100 metres above sea level, and the tour lasts just under 4 hours. We had no idea of either expectation and it was the first thing we had to ask.

We had a lot of fun with our guide Cristian walking the streets of El Alto, riding the Cable Car and visiting the most emblematic cholets. Getting into one of them was a lot of fun and we took some nice pictures. It was also interesting to fly over the 16 de Julio fair and see its great extension. We tried the jawitas and they are delicious :)
