This was an amazing experience to learn about the transformation of one of Bogota's oldest neighborhoods that at one time was considered to be the most dangerous, told by a local guide who at one time had been part of the gangs. His story will bring tears to your eyes. Added to the story are the amazing and colorful murals and the welcoming smiles of the people who live in the neighborhood. Not to be missed.

Finally a tour to discover and explore the real life of people who lived a totally different life besides us. Understanding their reasons, because at least it’s not their fault. Many areas like this are around the world. Just open your eyes and heart to get in touch. Communication! Your Curiosity! If you want to see a Zoo you are not elected to join this tour. Change your point of view before participating.
Thanks to our guide and the gang members to explain and answer on our questions! Highly recommended!

I returned from Colombia 10 days ago. My head and heart are full, and I will never forget the amazing people we met and the stories they shared about themselves and their communities. Walking through, learning about the neighborhood and seeing the powerful murals of Egipto with our local guide is the kind of tour that I wish everyone would make time to experience. I cannot recommend it highly enough!

How does one grow up in a community that has been perceived by so many as "dangerous and ravaged by decades of gang violence"? How does one get to that point of "enough is enough" and commit to breaking that cycle, not only for oneself but also for one's family and community? How can thoughtful tourism be one positive of many needed to complete the puzzle?

Breaking Borders is indeed a transformation experience. Don't miss!

Thanks for your kind comment Lauren! Indeed, in this tour we enter what for some persons might be a dangerous neighborhood but with a comprehensive and sustainable approach we cooperate with the community and contribute to their local needs through fair economic opportunities and Top Notch experiences! Thanks again and take care!

We went on the Breaking Borders walking tour and it was very interesting and informative. I was fascinated by the history of the neighborhood and the transformation that it’s undergoing. This group is doing important work and it was great to support them!

The tour with mr pumpkin was really impressive, as an europe guy its really weird to see these people live like this.

The tour was really worth the money, there was an english speaking tourguide (he translated everything what the people in egipto told us).

I recommend everybody to take this tour!!

If you want to get a sense of how gangs began and why they disintegrate - this tour is a perfect example of how transformation can occur in certain neighborhoods. Definitely worth a trip. The walk around is incredible and the former gang members have colorful stories to tell . They also rap on the spot :)

Hi Smriti. Thank you so much for taking the time to write this! For us, it was such a pleasure having this special group of Harvard students in Colombia. We are still buzzing about it and it's great to hear you enjoyed it, especially the Breaking Borders experience at the Egipt neighborhood in Bogotá, because that tour that is definitely one of a kind. Hopefully it's not the last time you visit us! Have an awesome day! - Daniela O.

Two of us booked the Breaking Borders tour via Impulse Travel in January. It's a fascinating walk round Barrio Egipto, a neighbourhood of Bogotá which is still controlled by gangs and would not be recommended to visit unless you were with one of the gang members. We were lucky enough to be with the head of the initiative, Jaime, and the only other person with us was Raul, a representative of Impulse Travel, the company with whom the project was started, so we essentially had a private tour, which meant we could ask questions as we wished and we got a really personal service. You could contact Jaime privately, but there was real value in booking via Impulse, because they picked us up at our hotel and we got an extra insight from Raul into how the project started and other aspects of the city. Plus, the drive from the hotel to the meeting point with Jaime was spectacular. I have always wanted to learn what life is like in gang-controlled areas of cities like Bogotá and this was an invaluable opportunity. I thoroughly recommend it!

Hi! Thank you so much for taking the time to write us this review. Breaking Borders is really one of our most special tours for the positive impact is generating. We've been working with this group of ex-gang leaders for a couple of year and to see the joy they get out of showing the best of their neighborhood, it's amazing! I'm very glad to hear you had a good time and enjoyed your time on Bogotá. Hopefully you can come back and get to explore more of Colombia. It was our pleasure being your travel buddies! Daniela
