- hoopiet0 contributionsGEORGIA - THE REAL DEALThere are two Georges to this Georgia story. George I who runs the VISIT GEORGIA WITH GEORGE business and George II, our personal guide for nearly two weeks. The first George chatted to my husband and me on Whatsapp from our home in Sydney and talked to us about what we had in mind for the tour, the pace of the trip etc. He gave us good advice about where to go, how to criss cross Georgia in the time we had and lined us up with the main George of the story - our wonderful, personal driver and tour guide. So this review is mostly about George II. George II is in his 30's, is highly educated, has a young family, a comfortable car and is a great driver with excellent knowledge of the countryside, back roads, hidden gems and major attractions. He has an in depth understanding of the politics, culture and history of his country, interacts positively with locals and did everything he possibly could to make our trip the totally memorable holiday it was. He has a fabulous sense of humour and was excellent company - important when you're spending so much time together. There was never a sense for us that he was "just" our driver - conversations flowed easily and comfortably, his English is outstanding and we included him as much as we all wanted in meals, walks, drink breaks etc. We went our separate ways for dinner each evening. We slightly amended the trip originally planned to allow for "down" days when we didn't fancy being in the car or road tripping. Because we did spend a lot of time in the car. In hindsight, we possibly could have planned the geography of the trip itself slightly more efficiently but no regrets! We visited Georgian beauty spots, places of worship, historical buildings, wineries and vineyards, and all the time with George's interesting and knowledgeable insight. There was never a sense that it was all too dry and boring - on the contrary - we were fascinated to soak up as much as we could and George is very perceptive about personalities, energy levels, etc. George quickly grasped that for us, our trip was not just about getting from A to B and ticking off another place of interest but about special lunch spots, meeting Georgians and experiencing the amazing culture of the country. He took us off the beaten track to find wonderful local restaurants where the owners took us in and cooked their specialities. Out of the blue, one group of locals paid for our dinner one evening without us realising and we ended up drinking copious amounts of chacha (local vodka) with them, learning local customs and making toasts to the dead and living! On another day, a huge group of working men who were having lunch sent food to our table. We reciprocated with wine and chacha and ended up making speeches, toasting Georgia (*with Tamada's approval) and communicating via George and the waitress. *It seems that every large table of diners has a Tamada - the head of the table, controller of who says what and when, who toasts and drinks and traditional patriarch of Georgian Feasting. At least, that's our interpretation. So we loved the authenticity of the trip and getting slightly more than skin deep. At another lunch spot, we met the Leader of one of the Opposition parties who was canvassing the day before the General Elections. Traffic was chaotic on that day - bus loads of people from the countryside were being paid to travel into the city to vote. Luckily George navigated some hairy back roads but that was a loooooong day in the car. Initially we asked George I for hotel recommendations but I went out on a limb and booked hotels myself. I'm super fussy so I booked lovely boutique rooms (with a bath and shower!!!). There is lots of choice across Georgia from boutique to basic, depending on budget and requirements. We loved Rooms Hotels around the country. A consistently cool vibe with knowledgeable and helpful staff. We flew from Sydney to Tblisi via Dubai and left from Tblisi to London via Istanbul. I believe there are now flights from Australia to Turkey which would make Australia to Georgia via Istanbul much easier/quicker. Our trip took in Tblisi, Borjomi, Kutaisi, back to Tblisi, Telavi, Kazbegi and back to Tblisi - and with lots of stops and sights/sites in between. The countryside is beautiful, like all countries poor in parts, rich in history, every building seems to be covered in vines and the wine history and culture is (unexpectedly for us) everywhere. The Russian/Georgian history is palpable and there is much to learn for most Westerners. We travelled through the last two weeks of October and had perfect weather. Sunshine and blue skies almost every day, a vague smattering of rain one day and snow in Kazbegi - which we expected and wanted! I told George I'm always lucky but October is a great time to be in Georgia. Very few tourists, great weather, fantastic hospitality. The whole shebang! We bought beautiful original art in Tblisi and a bit of old Russian propaganda art. Getting it all back to Sydney was a palaver but it's all re-framed and hanging now so we are getting over the trauma!!!! There is probably more to add to this and photographs will follow. My guide, Tamar, was interesting and informative. I really enjoyed talking with her on the drive to and from Tbilisi. The walkway down to the waterfalls was unfinished as of July 13, 2022, but very worth it. Loved the adrenaline rush from the bicycle cable ride.

The Diamond Bridge is something unique and spectacular. It's situated about 2 hours drive from Tbilisi. Its a 787 feet glass and metal bridge over the Dashbashi Canyon, with a diamond-shaped cafe in the middle, suspended from the bridge dangling above 900 ft above the Dashbashi Canyon. The cafe serves coffee and there are few chairs and tables to sit down and have the view. The bridge and diamond cafe looks bit scary, but it's very safe to visit it. People with fear of heights may find it difficult to access.

Its by luck that we met George from Georgia but we could not have asked for more. We were 6 of us - 2 families and George went beyond expectations. He works with you and designs a package to suite our time and needs. More than a business George makes it very personal about what he does and that is very special. Our experience at the Dashbashi Canyon was amazing. Very beautiful sites, the trip down to the waterfalls is little hectic but worth the effort. The Bike ride across the canyon was the best, compared that to the swing experience. The diamond has a lot of picture venues - but george will tell you to get all of the adventured done 1st ...Thanks george for the best time ever.

Tsalka's Dashbashi Canyon was an adrenaline-pumping experience. Touted as one of the world's finest, the canyon was a juxtaposition of thrilling activities like the bicycle zip line and tranquil spots perfect for photography. The Glass Bridge and Diamond Café added a modern touch to the otherwise rustic day. The culinary end was delightful, promising a return to Georgia's wonderland.
