About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 649melissap0 contributionsWe felt insulted and hustled by our guide - not coolMy husband and I went on two tours with Ahmed from Magic Life Tours during our week-long vacation in Cairo. The first time was a tour of Khan el-Khalili market that was booked through the hotel. The second tour was a shopping excursion on Nasr Awad street in Old Cairo that we arranged directly with him. I will review both of these trips in this review. *** First Trip to Khan el-Khalili Market: Overall, it was a decent tour. Our guide, Ahmed, showed us all the main sites to see and brought us to a fantastic shop where we purchased incredible, handmade souvenirs. We also had tea & coffee inside a famous cafe, which was lovely. However, there were several instances when we felt like we were being rushed. I'd describe it as if we felt like a burden at times, which was odd. Ahmed decided to tell us about his son while we were in the cafe, and we immediately felt he did this to encourage us to provide a heftier tip at the end of the tour. He was extremely pushy at the end of the tour, asking us to provide a review, even going so far as to tell us to look at the latest good reviews and write ours accordingly. He followed up multiple times via WhatsApp with my husband—sometimes by text and sometimes he called. This level of pushiness is not at all appropriate. So, while we thoroughly enjoyed the market, we did not feel Ahmed was the right guide for us. *** Second Trip to Nasr Awad Street (shopping tour): Originally, we booked a tour with a different company, but when they failed to show up, we reluctantly messaged Ahmed to see if he was available to take us on a comparable tour. I say reluctantly because of our experience a couple of days prior. Ultimately, we really wanted to go, but had no idea where great, tourist-friendly papyrus, cotton, spice, and jewelry stores were. A price was negotiated beforehand, and no further details were discussed other than when he'd pick us up from the hotel. When he picked us up, he was the one who determined where we'd go shopping, and he knew exactly what we were looking to purchase. the locations, and he knew the sorts of things we wanted to shop for. On our way back, he stopped at a gas station, and he got a call from his boss (honestly, we thought he owned the company as he alluded to that on our first trip, so it was surprising to us that his boss called.) After speaking briefly with his boss, he told us we needed to pay MORE for the trip than we originally agreed upon because we apparently took much longer than the one hour he told us was included in the price. To be crystal clear, in no way, shape, or form were we ever told the trip would be one hour. In fact, a shopping trip like the one we went on could never be completed in one hour, and especially not when you factor in getting there, and getting back to the hotel. Having him tell us that we took longer than our allotted time was ridiculous, considering he took us to the shops and knows full well going to 4-5 shops, each with their own "mini-tour" (e.g., the papyrus shop demonstrated how to make papyrus, the spice store gave a whole explanation of all the teas and spices in their shop, etc.) was an impossibility. We felt he was trying to rip us off at the last minute, going back on his word and using his phone call with his boss as the excuse. We felt insulted and hustled, and we did NOT pay him the additional amount requested. That whole thing left a terrible taste in our mouth, and unfortunately reconfirmed that Ahmed was not at all the right guide for us. This shopping tour was also incredibly expensive for what Ahmed provided, which was nothing at all other than a drive. I wasn't happy at all because he only took us to one street and basically told us which shops to go to, and that was it. We could have taken an Uber for FAR LESS money. Our only experience with this company was with Ahmed. So, if you are going to book with Magic Life Tours, I would definitely ask who your guide is before you go, to avoid winding up in the same situation as us. We had discussed going on another tour with him the following day, but he never contacted us about it, as I suspect he understood that he had messed up his chances with the whole asking for extra money thing. I hope this detailed review helps.Written 20 February 2025

Her passion for Egypt’s past was contagious, and her anecdotes danced across the dunes. We floated on feluccas, lost in the shadow of the Sphinx, and reveled in Karnak’s grandeur.
