Wonderful Kenya Safari
Sep 2021 • Couples
We chose Odyssey Safaris for our Kenya trip. Beatrice, in their office, answered all of my questions and I had many. I commend her patience! Our guide, Jackson, is very interesting, his knowledge of the animals and his country is fascinating. Odyssey took care of the details and their price was very reasonable. Finally, we saw the big five and so much more. If you’re ever interested in an African safari check out Odyssey!

Best Kenyan Safari
Jun 2021 • Family
What can I say! I definitely am blow away by Odyssey safari. Before even arriving to Kenya Lucy was prompt in emailing us back and forth regarding the safari and what we would need for our visit. Everything was wonderful from the moment we were picked up from the airport by our tour guide Jackson who was on time at the airport and was waiting with a sign with our names on it. Jackson explained the plan everything that was going to be happening within the next few days before we left for our safari . The next day the tour manager, Jackson and Lucy provided us an itinerary of our 8 day safari. They were patient and kind and answered all of our questions. Jackson was great as our safari driver! Jackson was always prompt and always informing of the next days schedules. Jackson knew the best times to start and end or safari’s so we could see all animals. Jackson was incredibly knowledgeable about facts about the animals, the culture and the environment. We were able to see all big five animals up close and person. Jackson knew all the best parts of the parks to see each animal. Jackson made sure that we had an incredible visit on our safari from the game rides to make sure we were comfortable in the lodges we stayed at. I will definitely be back again and will be requesting Jackson as my tour guide.

An incredible experience, planned with care by professionals
May 2021
We just returned how from one of the most incredible journeys I have every experienced, and I have explored hundreds of cities around the globe. An African Safari has always been a lot the top of my “must do” list, but timing and the expense have always held me back.

I saw a deal from Odyssey Safaris in early spring. Needing to celebrate being vaccinated a on nearing the end of my Covid lockdown kidney, my husband and I jumped at the opportunity of taking a trip with reduced fees, affordable airline tickets, and a Covid-safe protocol which meant the trip would be a private tour of the two of us, instead of a group of up to 8 strangers.

During booking and up until takeoff, the staff (especially Lucy) was incredibly communicative, quickly answering a barrage of emails about topics from Covid protocols to LGBT travel (a concern as a gay couple in a county that criminalizes homosexuality), to booking additional excursions. The provided checklist of paperwork required — visas, Covid tests, QR code’s, health department forms — was complete and easy to complete. We heard from others we met that they were not provided with such a list, and spent a harried and stressful time in the airport conforming to local Covid rules.

After pleasant enough flights, on arrival, we were greeted outside of the airport by Charles, our guide and driver for the week. We had previously been introduced via an email with Charles’s credentials and training.

Exhausted from 24 hours if travel, the first night at the Safari Hotel in Kenya was a welcome respite after a day of flying. We woke the next morning to see the beautiful grounds and have a full breakfast. Before the first journey began, we were greeted by Lucy and other staff members for a rundown of the week ahead and to let us know some resorts were upgraded because of Covid closures. They managed all expectations, which I can see being helpful for those expecting a luxury experience.

The Taste of Kenya schedule we chose is very nice, but not luxurious. To keep costs down, we were driven around the country from park to park. Yes, you can pay to fly between parks, but you lose any sense of Kenya as a nation — the people, the smells, the markets, the housing, and the struggles of a nation that is expanding at a rapid pace.

With driving, you must realize that roads in Kenya are very basic. Paved roads between cities, but in the parks, they range from dirt and gravel roads to dirt paths. When riding off-road, it can be very bumpy. The whole trip takes place in a very nicely appointed Land Cruiser with large tires and sturdy shocks, but the ride is bumpy, and at times, can throw you around. This is not an experience for someone with a bad back or hips, or someone who suffers from car or motion sickness.

Our first park was Amboseli. We did not expect to be greeted by so many zebra, elephants, gazelles, monkeys, and giraffes — all in the first two hours! Amboseli requires you to stay on the roads, but the animals are so close, some even came up to the car. Amboseli does not have big cats or crocodiles, but we did see many hippos, flamingos and other water birds, plenty of ostrich and land birds, and in an moment I will never forget — four herds of elephants came together to walk across the plains (and road) in front of us. The majesty of this walk in indescribable. Our resort was upgraded, since the initial resort was closed for Covid. The Serena was elegant and comfortable— and since it is located in the park, you see animals as soon as you leave the compound. Definitely worth an upgrade.

After two full days at the park — each with multiple game drives in the morning and evening, we drove on to Lake Naivasha located in the Great Rift. I’ll be honest, the lake and the Sopa Resort were less impressive than described, but the day trip to national park at Lake Nakuru was absolutely amazing. We saw our first Musk Ox, Lions, White Rhinos, and the spectacular Rothschild Giraffes, who are larger than the more common Maasai Giraffe, with stunning white legs. When we return in the future (and we will), we will forget Naivasha and do two days of drives at Nakuru. The smaller park is full of animals in many difference settings, from plains to rainforest to the stunning lake.

The last stop was three days in the most famous of Kenya’s parks — Maasai Mara. We lucked out, as on our first drive in, we saw a brotherhood of five Cheetahs, a pride of 10 lions (2 males and 8 females), and stumbled upon an elegant Leopard. We were very lucky to see all of these — especially in a single drive. We found out from others that they had been searching for the leopard for days, and were a little jealous of us. The second day of drives was less successful — but that is expected. These are natural parks, but zoos. That said, we saw a team of Crocodiles rip apart a previously passed Hippo, Elephants, Wildebeests, Gazelles, Topi, Jackals, Hares, Hyenas, Giraffes, Mongoose, and countless birds. The vastness of Maasai Mara is breathtaking — as far as you can see, for dozens of miles.

We booked two exceptional add-one. The sunrise hot air balloon ride gave us a very different perspective on the Mara. Floating from between 400’ to just a dozen or so above the ground, we were able to spot many animals hiding in the tall grass, and see the hundreds of paths cut by the off-road vehicles. The hilltop breakfast that followed was something out of a travel magazine — a hot breakfast compete with a formally set clothes table, champagne and Bloody Mary’s, and even a “Loo with a View.” All top notch, and all very extravagant.

That evening, we booked a Sunsetter. We expected a few cocktails in a nice area of the hotel and a plate of nibbles. What we experienced was another luxury experience with chatting dishes of hot snacks, a full bar, and a wait staff to serve you while you sit and watch the stunning sunset. It was truly one of the most romantic evenings of our lives, and something we can never forget.

The Ashnil Camp at Maasai Mara was elegant and complete. The staff was attentive and warm, and the meals delicious. When you drive through the plains and hills of the Mara, you see nothing for miles (but animals). Approaching the camp, you see nothing until you drive through a grove of trees — which ends in a gated resort, complete with a swimming pool, massage and spa, a reasonably priced gift shop, and views of the hippos while you enjoy breakfast and lunch. The rooms themselves were well appointed and comfortable. Truly an oasis.

Our final drive out of the park was disappointing, as between the tall grass and the increased heat, few animals were out. Again — it’s all a crap shoot, but with an incredible guide like Charles, he was able to track footprints, speak to other drivers, and use his decades of experience and intuition to locate game which few others found.

Charles stayed with us until dropping us off at the airport well past the time normally scheduled for the trip, so we took our time driving back to Nairobi by stopping at a Maasai market, and taking him for a well-deserved celebratory dinner at a fine restaurant.

Overall, the week was an incredible experience, and one we will cherish for the rest of our lives. We will return with friends — they need to be touched by the majesty and awe of these amazing animals as we had been.

My takeaways for those considering the trip: 1) Odyssey Safaris was a pleasure to work with, and we will book more trips through them 2) Take advantage of the upgrades and excursions — they only add to the experience and your ability to relax and truly envelop yourself, and 3) Have an open mind — Hakuna Matatta.

Unbelievable. Above and beyond all my expectations! Our guide was exceptional (Erastus); very knowledgeable about the animals we saw as well as the history of the area, politics... any other random questions we asked. Accommodations and meals were all very nice. I’ve recommended Odyssey Safaris to all my family and friends. It was a trip of a lifetime for me.

Kenyan Safari
Jun 2019 • Family
I can’t say enough good things about Odyssey Safaris! The tour guide, Erastus, was amazingly adept at identifying every possible animal, all while navigating the Kenyan countryside in our state of the art off-road land cruiser. I learned so much, and was able to take close up photos of every animal I dreamed of seeing. The accommodations were unbelievably beautiful, spacious, and modern, while maintaining the African charm I was expecting. We visited an authentic Maasai village, where we were treated to dancing, a jumping contest, a tour, and an explanation of their incredible way of life. It was an unforgettable experience that changed my life so much that I went back for a second visit! I wish I could make it an annual tradition! My heart will always be in Kenya:) Thank you, Odyssey Safaris, for opening my eyes to a world of beauty that I couldn’t conceive of until I saw it in person!

Life Changing Trip!
Nov 2019
This was the best trip I have ever taken. It truly was life changing. Not one aspect of this trip was disappointing. Our guide, Jackson was the most patient and informative guide, I think we could have ever asked for. We saw everything - the big five, a cheetah hunt, herds of elephants, lions, hippos! It was the greatest experience I ever had. No matter what questions we asked, Jackson was so helpful and informative. He was patient when all we wanted to do was watch a cheetah hunt for three hours. He was amazing. Odyssey Safaris is truly the best. They offer so many activities. My only recommendation is that when you are booking, inquire about all of the activities as the descriptions of the activities in the itinerary do not do them justice as everything was so much better than it seemed written down. I would recommend anyone to do this safari trip through Odyssey, you will not be disappointed.

Amazing Trip!
Oct 2019
We have just returned from the most wonderful and amazing trip we have taken! We have traveled in Europe, Asia, North/South and Central America and this was the best trip we have had. The fascinating thing about the safari is no exhibit can be pre-planned. For example you round a curve, under a bush is a cheetah, or a pride of lions or a leopard in a tree. The variety of animals and abundance we saw was beyond our expectations. We saw the Big Five and much more, zebras, ostrich, hippos and more.
Our guides, Simon and "Sir Charles" were both certified, well qualified, and very knowledgeable. They worked extremely hard finding animals and getting us close enough for great photos. The accommodations, staff and food at all lodges were excellent.
We are looking forward to our next trip and hopefully we can travel with Simon and Sir Charles.
Thank you again, Simon, Charles, and the entire staff (Jess, Beatrice, and Mark) for making this adventure outstanding! Janet and "Chief" Bob Hayes.

Trip of a Lifetime – Highlights of Kenya Safari – Great organization, Great guide!
Sep 2019
Just got back from the 8 day Highlights of Kenya Safari. It was amazing. Jess Crimmins in the states did an excellent job of organizing our trip, including helping ahead. (You have to see the elephant orphanage!)

The safari was 5 star amazing. Charles, our driver/guide, was wonderful. He is an excellent driver and part of the fun was the driving - all the herds of animals cross the roads constantly. Charles was knowledgeable and patient.
He knew the reserves well and was good at finding animals hidden in the trees and bush. We saw zebras and wildebeests and giraffes, buffalo and gorgeous antelopes. We saw elephant families with babies. Some of the lodges had animals like zebra right on the grounds, and in Masai Mara we could hear and see hippos in the river at the lodge.

We saw all the big Five plus cheetahs, buffalo, hippos and crocs. There were warthogs everywhere and black faced monkeys and baboons and birds. I could watch the giraffes all day. It was great seeing the lion cubs playing. We saw all these animals at very close range.

Things to note: Bring an adapter that can handle at least 4 USB’s, a camera that can also do video, several large sized memory cards for your camera -You can’t pop into a store there for supplies. We had all brought some snacks from the states which turned out to be a good idea for the drives.

I give Odyssey Safari a 5 star rating and highly recommend it and I highly recommend Charles for your guide. If you see him, tell him Renee says hello!!

Trip of a lifetime!
May 2019 • Couples
WOW! From start to finish, this was a first class experience. Found the company on Groupon but booked directly with the company to get the dates I wanted. People say 'You found them on Groupon?' Yup and it was a top notch choice! The quality of the accommodations was top notch. We saw every animal possible, relatives of mine have been on many safaris and were amazed at the amount of animals we saw. Be prepared for long days of travel between camps (6 hour or so), but there are stops along the way. Plus, that enables you to see the county better and how the locals actually live.
For optional add on's we did the Giraffe center, Crescent Island and a Masai village visit. They were all fabulous as well and I recommend them all highly.
Finally, want to give a Huge shout out to our guide/driver Charles. He made our trip even more special. He promised me he would find me cheetahs and he delivered with the most adorable mother and cub.
Anyone hesitating to book a safari because of the price or feeling it isn't safe should not be worried about either. When I tell people what I paid, they are amazed. Also, safely was never a concern. At all times we felt completely safe.
I hope this convinces someone to actually book this trip and check off a safari from their bucket list.
I'm sure all guides are great but if you get Charles, tell him Wendy says Hi and thanks for the great trip!
