- Baks880 contributionsFantastic Slave Trade MuseumWe were in Kenya, and visited Mombasa as part of our Indian Ocean beach swim experience. We took the liberty to visit Fort Jesus Museum in our spare time. I read History at A-Level and my understanding of Slave Trade has been from western civilisation books. This place showed and I was proper schooled that day. Very poignant place in African Slave Trade history. Enjoyed the visit immensely. I am grateful for the gentleman at the Cocoa stand , knowledgeable, well travelled and respectful attempt at speaking my Mother Tongue, Chewa from Malawi. 🇲🇼Written 16 September 2024

- EvaF2Eva0 contributionsInteresting historical landmarkFirst of all be sure you have booked your tickets in advance as like at most of Kenyan attractions it is not possible to buy it onside. I also recommend to take a guide. We hired one directly at the entrance to the fortress. The fort is very well maintained, with very informative exhibitions and together with a knowledgeable guide it gives you a good view into Mombasa and Kenya history. Additionally you will experience amazing views to the old harbour.Written 29 April 2024

- paulsD1610XG0 contributionsShort but very insightfulOur guide, Godfrey, contacted us via whatsapp short after we made the booking and that way we managed to arrange our meeting point and timing. We went first to two Hindu temples, including the oldest in Mombasa. Unfortunately of so many house of worships in Mombasa, only those two are open for visitors. Godfrey diligently explained everything we need to know about the customs. From there he took us to a Park and the Elephant Tusks monument. While at Fort Jesus, Godfrey gave us lots of historical background and he showed us places that most tourists didn't go. We also learned how the Portuguese were kicked out by the Arabs and how the Arabs fortify the fort further. Finally, he took us to the old town and the spice market. All in all, a short but very insightful half day tour. Highly recommended.Written 14 January 2024

Fort Jesus was built by the Portuguese towards the end of the 16th century. Located in the Old Town, Mombasa. The fort area is well preserved. Tour guides are available for tours within the fort since this is not inlcuded in the price of the city tours. Only the entry fees are included. I recommend a guide though since information notices are nto available throughout the fort

I visited Fort Jesus museum a fort tower that was built by Portugees. It was then captured by the omans to safeguard their colony from Zanzibar. later the Portuguese seized it and the fort was made stronger thus able to stand till today. Fort Jesus was later declared to be a national museum by UNESCO.
it's a good place to visit to learn more about our country Kenya especially the Swahili culture.

I do not know if it is posible to visit the fort without a guide, but the place is small enough to see and comprehend on your own and with a guidebook.
