Jiankou Wall Technical Hike - James!!!
James is simply a masterful guide. His knowledge of the wild parts of the Great Wall is unmatched. He both takes the time to explain the environment, it's history with local flavor in addition to the technical aspects of hiking this often treacherous, rarely used part of the wall. In our 4 hour hike, we climbed 70 deg stairs, highly difficult and technical passages all with Jame's expertise guiding the way. We really can't thank him enough for a spectacular day, in and out of light rain that led to a truly memorable experience. The Jiankou part of the Wall is a must do for any serious technical hiker and James is only guy who we'd venture out there.

A great way to see the Wild Wall
This was a terrific hike that exposed us to a wild section of the Great Wall with stunning views and steep climbs. A great option for those looking to avoid the crowds and test their hiking prowess! James is an excellent guide who looks after his customers' every need, including transportation and food, and provides helpful context. Will definitely be doing another hike with him!

A unique hiking experience along the Great Wall
This was a wonderful and unique opportunity to see a part of the Great Wall that has remained basically untouched for centuries. The views are spectacular. When we approached one of the highest points - the so-called Flying Eagle - two real eagles appeared, flying over us! The hiking is not easy, as there are many steep and rough patches to overcome and the path can be quite slippery at times. But our guide Peter was amazing: so knowledgeable and helpful, he provided interesting information about history and nature, as well as invaluable tips on how to overcome the hiking challenges along the way. And he patiently waited for us when we slowed down - the trip took a bit longer than we anticipated, but it was definitely worthy! Highly recommended to those who are not afraid of taking some risk and making some effort to climb a truly authentic section of the Great Wall!

Family hike on Great Wall with amazing views
We had such an amazing hike with Peter, who was an excellent guide. He tailed everything to our family’s needs as we were travelling with our 3 kids ages 10 and 14. Peter shared so much interesting facts and history and was so friendly and engaging with the children. The hike itself was breathtaking with views of the ancient Great Wall winding through forests and mountains. I cannot recommend highly enough

Beautiful scenery and a nice hike at the Great Wall.
Thanks to our guide James for bringing us to a wonderful part of the Great Wall. The view from the hike was amazing! He told us interesting facts about the Great Wall and the area around, and made sure that we had a really nice day from the moment he picked us up, and until we were back in the city again.

Absolute best pick for a complete 1 day Datong Grottoes and Temple visit!
We are so glad we picked this tourguide! A greatest day in the Datong area! Perfect english speaking guide Anna, very relaxed, friendly, knowledgeable, close local connection with the area and proud of the historic heritage. She has excellent feel for the needs of her travel party and arranged a perfect car - very important since tje two sights are quite far apart. The trip however is cut in two parts with a stop at a fantastic restaurant! Could not have been better. If you read this, thanks again, Anna!

Avoid the crowds and see the Great Wall in it's unreconstructed state
Being relatively far out from Beijing, the Gubeiikou section of the wall is ideal if you want to avoid crowds and see the wall in a relatively unreconstructed state. We were there on a beautiful Wednesday in May for three hours and saw exactly two other people. The section is also relatively flat, although we still climbed 74 floors according to my phone, Our guide, Peter, was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The tour was entirely private, just our group, so we could go at our own pace and take all the pictures we wanted. Lunch was a delicious addition. It comes after the hike, so bring some snacks and eat breakfast. There are cheaper options, but you will not regret spending the money.

Amazing Great Wall hiking day trip
The Great Wall hiking day trip was my personal vacation highlight! James, our tour guide, was super friendly, funny and took care of everything. He organised the pickup in Bejing, guided us on the Great Wall and introduced us to traditional chinese food after the hike. This day trip was way better than the typical way of visiting the Great Wall at Mutianyu which I have also done during my trip. You get to be active, see nicer parts of the Great Wall and experience a true adventure!

Not to be missed while in Beijing!
Since it was a chinese holiday, the tour company decided to begin the day earlier to avoid the crowds and traffic jam on the way back, which was a great call. We’ve arrived at the Great Wall, when almost no one was there! I was able to walk around places where the wall was completely destroyed, partially reconstructed and fully reconstructed. The views where amaaaazing! I know this is an expensive tour, specially if you go solo, such as myself, but it’s totally worth it. This company is very professional, the driver was great, and the guide was a lovely person to be around :) He explained a lot of curiosities about the wall, as long as its history, and answered all my questions. Lunch was also great, pretty local, with veg options :) They provide enough water and snacks a long the way. The hike is pretty easy, not much physical effort required. I can’t express enough my gratitude for this tour! Not to be missed while in Beijing!

Hearty hike to unrestored portion of the Great Wall and Summer Palace walking tour
Our guide, Peter, was wonderful on this adventure. Started out with an easy hotel pickup in a new car, travel 90 minutes to a rural area for the start of an hour long steep hike up to the unrestored part of the Great Wall, an hour climbing around the sections of the wall, hiking down for 30 minutes before a fantastic place for lunch, with a Summer Palace walking tour to wrap up the day before hotel drop off. We felt safe the entire time but wished we had brought hiking boots as the hike was on rocky ground and very steep. Peter brought hiking poles for us and they were extremely helpful as well as water for us to drink for all the exertion. I was hoping to see the wall go into the water at Huanghuacheng, but we did not see the lake or a restored section of the wall on this trip. The Summer Palace was stunning and another tour guide, Sue, came along to share facts about the location with us. The food was AMAZING and we enjoyed the adventure!

Walking along the wall with James
We booked a private tour along the Great Wall of China with James, and what a day it was! The weather couldn’t have been better as James led us to the unrestored section of the wall to start. As we walked and marveled at the breathtaking scenery, James shared his extensive knowledge of the area’s history. The hike led us through stunning spots with postcard-worthy views. Eventually, we reached the restored section of the wall, continuing our hike while soaking in the beauty around us. James had thoughtfully provided snacks and water, which were much appreciated on a hot day. We concluded our adventure with a delicious local lunch, every dish was yummy. Thank you, James, for an unforgettable experience—it was a pleasure from start to finish.

          A magical experience!
We had a fantastic time on our trek with James! Not only did he show us the best scenic spots, but he helped us get through the parts of the trek that were more difficult (which we really appreciated!). And he is an AMAZING photographer! We will definitely be doing another trek with James in the future, and are so looking forward to seeing another beautiful part of the Great Wall!

This is one of many hikes we’ve done with James and we cant speak highly enough of his patience, experience and knowledge about this part of the wall and many others in and around Jiankou. A terrific day out, with breathtaking and wonderful sights and sounds. James always keeps us all entertained and is also focused on safety and timeliness.

Jason was a great guide, and the walk was well worth it! Went while it was very cold, but this meant the views were spectacular from the top! Going along the more abandoned parts of the wall was so much fun, and was a lot more unique and interesting than the restored parts. You do get to see the restored parts at the end of the walk as well.

        Absolutely worth it!
A beautiful and wonderful hike with some challenges but just enough to feel that we are climbing a mountain ! Absolutely gorgeous views, the pictures do not do justice to the actual beauty of the area. I strongly recommend. Peter, my guide was attentive and knowledgeable. I would do this again with my family.

Doing this charity trek for Macmillan would not have been the same amazing experience it was, without our awesome guide James Ren. James was professional, hugely knowledgable of China's history, funny, inspiring, fearless, considerate, enthusiastic, and HUGELY supportive. Thank you SO very much James. Highly recommended.

        Wow James,
Our private trekking tour from the “wild” portion of the Great Wall in Jiankou to the restored beautiful Mutianyu Great Wall will forever be in our memory. My wife and I have hiked many places in the world but this was one of the more challenging nearly 8 miles with the equivalent 119 floors elevation change according to our I-Phone. The views were incredibly spectacular of the snaking Great Wall as it winds from mountain top tower to tower teetering on the precipices of the wild mountain ridges. James’s stories and history of the many sections of the Wall made this spectacular hike one to cherish. My wife and I are in our late 50’s and we felt very safe as James kept to our pace giving us time to rest and take photos of amazing views. You definitely need to be prepared with comfortable hiking boots, a day pack with water and snacks, hat, and layered clothing with long sleeve shirt and light jacket in October for the cooler forested Jiankou climb. Once we peaked at one the towers, the lack of shade on the scrub brush dryer side leading to Mutianyu meant a warmer walk where we shed our jackets. The downward side of the hike was welcomed but it is steep including many stairs and uneven walking surfaces on the restored wall. We chose to walk the entire way to the Mutianyu village and not take the cable car. Our tired legs were a little shakey when we reached the shuttle to take us to our private car. Our Chinese dinner and local beer really completed our incredible day. Thank you James for the best day on the Great Wall.

You have many options for Great Wall tours....and with what’s likely a once in a lifetime opportunity choose wisely. We picked a good one.

Pretty cool day with Ren (James) from the Great Wall Trek Club. You will NOT see the touristy part of the wall until later in the day. We did about a miles and a half up to miles up the Wall from Jiushuikeng village just to get to the unrestored part. Then a couple miles walking on the unrestored part (closed to public 😃), followed by a good stretch on the restored part open to tourists ending at Mutian Valley area...didn’t see a single person the first part of our day (that was awesome). So glad we did it this way; seeing two totally different wall experiences. Looking back, we’d have missed so much had we gone to the area and taken a chair lift up. We DID take the Toboggan down.

        Couple notes:

We were picked up at our hotel (and dropped off there). Just about 2 hours in both directions.

They provide walking poles - you’ll be glad they did!

Wear some good shoes. Hiking shoes are not required but they don’t hurt.

James was GREAT. Good English, and experienced hiker, and will walk at your pace (he takes good photos too).

James had snacks for us - and water - we needed them!

Our driver - Mr. Xu., was a great driver, sound odd, but your coming from/to the city of Beijing.

We had lunch after the hike, and it was very good. All was provided in the cost of the trek.

I’ll be honest. We were sore the next day, but we don’t exercise in all fairness.

        HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend these guys.

Hard to believe, sitting on my couch at home now, that just two days ago we were hiking with James along the Great Wall. My leg muscles are still talking to me. My wife and I are in our early 60's, and I refer to us as being 'modestly fit'. I ride a bike to my job every day, and my wife's job has her active on her feet, so at least some leg muscles are strong. Hiking the wall apparently uses different muscles, but we made the hike without any difficulties; it was the next day or two where we are strongly reminded of what we did. The hike was 10K (6 miles), but much of it is steep with many, many steps. Fortunately, once you have climbed up the hill (1 hour) to reach the Wall, the general tendency is to go downhill to reach your destination. The air temperature was good (about 15oC or up to the low 60s oF), as expected in October. Air quality was relatively poor; lots of white aerosols in the air around us, so the long views were relatively constrained.

We contacted the company with a direct call using the Beijing phone number provided on their website. We called on Friday evening to set up the hike for Sunday, which is probably less advance time than most should do. James answered the phone and we set up the trip. He picked us up at the hotel with his driver at 8 AM, exactly on time, in a late model VW sedan (leather interior, great condition). The guys opened doors for us, loaded our backpacks into the trunk, and made us feel very comfortable. James started right away in giving us lessons and answering our questions. The driver was very good; we felt safe in his hands. James brought plenty of water for us, though you'll need to carry your own water in your pack; he also gave us walking sticks, which proved very helpful for steadying us in steep areas. We brought snacks to rebuild our blood sugar, and James shared Snickers with us. We did not have hiking shoes; I hiked in Skechers walking shoes that I'd used to walk around Beijing.

We went with a guide, rather than just have a driver drop us off at one end of the trail and collect us at the other, because our departure flight was the next day and we didn't want to have any surprises. It cost about $100 extra having a guide; we recommend it. Walking alone can be done easily enough, though there will be a few splits in the trail that you'll wonder about. There were plenty of other people making the hike, mostly Chinese without guides, so following them would be easy enough. But we did wonder how we'd find a driver/car at the end of the trip, given that the parking areas there are distributed and large, and the drivers do not typically speak English.

The hike was described as lasting 4-5 hours. We started at about 11:20 (the drive was longer than usual by 1.5 h because of traffic issues) and ended near 4:30 PM. James kept us going at a very comfortable pace; he knew that we didn't have his endurance and strength, so the stops for photos and breath were often. We never felt rushed. So the duration is really up to the clients; take your time and enjoy the view and conversations along the way.

How fit do you need to be? We had to climb up and down steps that were numerous and therefore challenging, in the cumulative sense; my legs muscles were mushy by the end and my wife said her legs were shaking at one point. But you just keep going; there is nothing wrong with challenging your muscles. James was always there to help us with a steadying hand when necessary. If you do stairmasters, you'll be in better shape for the hike than were we. We took a 15 minutes break about 3/4 of the way into the trip, and that was too long to be seated; our muscles were tight when we started again. Better to keep going, with shorter breaks, and don't sit much.

We had a 'late' lunch after the hike at a restaurant 20 minutes down the road. It was the best food we had in China (Kung Pao chicken, spicy cauliflower, mushrooms, good beer). James ordered for us; it is evident that he has learned the taste buds and expectations of westerners. Be sure to stop there; it took care of our dinner needs for that evening.

We paid James once we were back at the hotel; we used American dollars but you can pay in Chinese bills as well.

Finally, it was a good thing the hike was on our last day in Beijing. We would not have been able to walk the city the day after the hike; our legs were extremely tight and sore. Better to be on the flight home then.

We love that we did this hike, and we'll boast about it now that we are home. You only live once, so go do it.

I booked at private tour with Greatwall Trekclub Tours to hike the Jiankou to Mutianyu section of the Great Wall. Booking via email and payment was easy as the company responded within an hour in English. I was on a (female) solo trip to Beijing and wanted to avoid the more touristy sections of the wall and a large bus tour. My guide, James, is an amazing man. He met me in the lobby of my hotel promptly at 8am. The drive to Jiankou took about 2 hours due to rush hour getting out of Beijing. James shared a lot of history about the Great Wall and China in general. He is also very patient and knows each micro section of the trail you will hike. This turned out to be important because an hour in to the hike it started to rain and did not let up all day. He brings ponchos, water, and walking sticks to aid in the climb and will guide you through any tricky areas were slipping/falling could be an issue. For reference I’m in my mid-40’s and not currently in great cardio shape but have done lots of hiking in the past. Once the driver drops you off at the trail head you climb to the top of the mountain where the wall is. I had to stop to catch my breathe several times. Once you reach the top you walk along the unrestored, wild sections of the wall towards Mutianyu. On this section there are a lot of steps to go up and down which are uneven. The closer you get to Mutianyu the more tourists you will see. The views are spectacular and vary throughout the hike. I was warned to eat a large breakfast because lunch is not until after the hike is complete. James does bring snacks though. Since it took me so long to complete the hike and due to the rain we did not eat until 5pm. I was never hungry so it wasn’t an issue but thought I should mention that your return time to the hotel could vary as after we finished lunch it was nearly a two hour drive back to my hotel due to the rain/traffic in Beijing. I should mention that the driver James selected was also excellent. If I return to Beijing I would definitely plan another longer custom hike with James in advance. As long as you are in reasonable health I highly recommend this hike!
