  • Learn about the history of the city's culinary traditions
What to expect
  • The cuisine of northeast China is an eclectic, savory mix of imperial food traditions and the humbler fare of local migrant populations. Sample traditional dishes alongside locals as you tuck into 15 different treats from three different food stops, along with local stalls. Tours are limited to 8 people for a personalized experience. As you travel through the back alleys of one of Beijing’s last surviving hutongs, or traditional residences, you’ll learn about the diverse flavors that have fueled the city for millennia. Prepare to be treated to an edible history lesson as you embark on a fact-filled taste tour. Learn about the invasions of Genghis Khan as you tuck into a Mongolian hotpot, and explore the city's hutong culture through a taste of Beijing BBQ chicken wings. Top off the evening with a Beijinger favorite—a family-run chicken restaurant—and a taste of the city’s one-of-a-kind jarred yogurt.

The best food tour we took in China. Our guide was Celia who met us at the entrance to the Metro. We found her to be very friendly, fun and quite knowledgeable about her city and its food. We first grabbed some takeout dumplings with skin so thin you could see thru it and brought them to a loud and authentic Mongolian hotpot place. The lamb and vegies were all good. From there it was onto an upscale rice wine bar for some delicious wine sampling. Yum!!!! Then onto donkey burgers - like small hamburgers except sweeter. She also introduced us to a favorite couple of street foods - one a crepe with fried tofu skin - out of this world and Mongolian yougert with honey. I would eat both of them every day if I could. After that we ate biang biang noodle soup with pork belly and vegies - good and the last was an old gambling den converted into a chicken wing place with fiery hot fried chicken wings. By the time we were done I was stuffed with great food and we were sad to say goodbye to Celia who was a terrific food guide! Do not miss this food tour! It is great!!

We booked this tour due to a recommendation of a colleague of mine. We did not regret this. Our tour guide Celia (a local from Beijing with perfect English skills) led us to places we usually wouldn't have entered or even recognized as a restaurant. The choice of food an drinks was superb. Our favourite was the Mongolian Hot Pot.

Celia was really nice and added much to the atmosphere by explaining local customs, stories about the Hutongs and the history of the meals served.

At the end of the day we ware totally stuffed and happy.

Thanks so much for taking the time to review! We're so glad you enjoyed hanging out with Celia and trying the classic Beijing dishes in the hutongs. Hope you'll visit us again soon in Beijing or Shanghai!

Celia was an amazing and knowledgeable host! She knows a lot about the history. She showed us around the magical hutongs and we tasted so many delicious typical Beijing foods of which many I hadn’t tried before but I can’t wait to have again. Also she showed us places where you would normally not end up. The group was fun - it was like hanging out with a group of friends. Book this tour! It’s worth it!

Hi Stevy - We’re so glad to hear you enjoyed both the food and the legends behind the dishes – and that you enjoyed meeting your fellow UnTourists! We honestly have the BEST guests in the world, and we love when the tour ends, but the friendships forged over food continue. Hope to see you again!

Celia is great fun to be around and she knows how to turn a group of strangers into instant friends for a night. There are tour guide who're in it for the money, Celia isn't one of them. She's the real deal and knows her stuff, not just the stuff she shows you but any question you might have will be answered thoroughly. Expect to taste real local cuisine and gain access to spots you won't get into as a laowei

Hi Steven - thanks so much for reviewing! We've designed our tour so it feels like a night out with friends (albeit one friend who knows A LOT about food), so we're so happy to hear your experience with Celia and your fellow UnTourists felt like that. Hope to eat with you again soon :)

We had a great time on this tour, led by Celia who knew so much about the real Beijing, and adapted the tour to our interests.

The tour visited some classic sites, ticking off all the boxes we had for food we wanted to check out. And Celia provided us with extra information to do our own exploring afterwards.

Absolutely worth the time and the cost. In a city where it can be a bit difficult to know where to go for the 'classics', this is a great introduction - highly recommended.

Yay! We're so happy to hear that our tours were a great introduction to Beijing food and you enjoyed exploring the capital's classics. Let us know if you're headed to Shanghai and we can show you the best dishes down south.

We had a wonderful night with our guide Celia. Celia is a local Beijinger so we were able to get a true local experience. Every dish on the tour was unique and delicious. Would definitely recommend to all travelers who are interested in an authentic Beijing culinary experience.

Thank you so much for your review! We are so happy that you enjoyed your time with Celia. We firmly believe that one of the best things about going on food tours is having the opportunity to try a range of food in a short time, and that's even better in China where most dishes are served family-style so you get to try even more!

First off, Julia is an amazing guide and is super friendly and knowledgeable. She was happy to answer any questions we had and even emailed us some useful info about the questions we asked (relating to NYE). I'm a very fussy person when it comes to food (especially trying new things) but I absolutely LOVED this tour! It was fantastic, the food was delicious, the rest of the group were friendly and a good time was had. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone who isn't sure about eating in Beijing because this has helped us so much! One thing I would advise is to do this tour at the start of your time in Beijing not the end!

Hi Shelby - thanks so much for taking the time to write a review! We're thrilled to hear that you tried new things and loved them with Julia. We are so glad you took advantage of the tour early in your trip - we find our guests who take the tour on the first or second day feel so much more empowered to sample local dishes and street food the rest of their time in China! Let us know if you're ever back in Beijing (or come visit us in Shanghai)!

We did this tour on our first day in Beijing and it was the best introduction to the city: We experienced the food and culture of the hutongs in a way we could have never on our own. We tried about 10 different options, from street food to a rice winery to yogurt to BBQ... we highly recommend taking this tour to get a true feeling for Beijing!

From traditional Mongolian hot pot to rice wine to donkey burgers to biang biang noodles, we had a great time on our food tour! Our guide, Celia, was super knowledgable and not only expertly navigated us around the hutongs (to many places we would never have thought to go), but offered lots of interesting history/background on the food and places we visited. COME HUNGRY (and prepared to walk)! There are 6+ stops over 3 hours, which goes by extremely quickly. We only wished we had done the tour earlier in our trip so that we could go back and eat more of the food we tried ... now we are trying to locate these in San Diego. I highly recommend this tour to any visitor.

Thanks for your kind words - the best thing about food tours is getting to sample SO MUCH FOOD in just a few hours, especially when you're traveling solo and have limited stomach/table space. We're glad to hear you took our advice to come hungry and enjoy all the tastings we sample along the tour route. Let us know if you're ever back in China :)

We had a total of 8 stops with some really extraordinary food options that you would never find by yourself like a traditional Mongolian hotpot on a coal oven, a hidden rice wine bar and a restaurant that was basically someone's living room in a Hutong.

Our host Julia gladly answered all our questions and even sent us an email afterwards with additional information about recipes and other things that we asked about.
She also let us take our time and in the end we were 45 minutes back later then planed, which made the trip feel more like an evening with a friend, than just a booked tour.

Hi Alex - thanks so much for your review! Our goal at UnTour Food Tours has always been to create an experience that feels more like hanging out with friends (albeit one who knows A LOT about Chinese food and culture) - that's why we called it "UnTour"! So it makes our day that you felt like you were amongst friends exploring the hutongs. Hope you'll eat with us again soon!
