Katong, home of the Peranakans. Singaporean cuisine is diverse and with heavy influences from several ethnic groups, as a result of its history as a seaport with a large immigrant population. Peranakans are descendants of early Chinese migrants who settled in Singapore and inter-marrying with local Malays. The Peranakan (or Nonya) cuisine is a blend of Chinese ingredients with spices and cooking techniques of the Malays, giving it a unique aroma, texture and taste. Katong Laksa and Nonya Bak Zhang are two quintessential Paranakan dishes. In Katong, you will also find a dizzying array of mouth-watering local hawker favourites, from Chicken Rice to Popiah, Curry Puffs, Roti Prata, Teochew Kueh and many many more. Your culinary choices are endless.

      Very glad I did it!
I originally signed up for the Sweet and Savory food tour, however there weren’t enough people so I agreed to switch over to the Chinatown tour. I loved it!! Even though my hotel was literally 700m down the road I hadn’t ventured up to Chinatown. Even without all the hawkers it’s something to check out! Having a guide to take me through it all was fabulous. All the options in Singapore are overwhelming; literally food everywhere. This helped me to figure out what was good and where to go to get good food! This was my first food tour ever and I think I’ll have to make it a thing wherever I go. I believe my guides name was Olivia; she was absolutely amazing! I can’t say enough positive things about her. Oh and we got lots and lots of food. Seriously, lots. And I eat a lot. I think I went back to my room and laid down for a few hours after it finished. So don’t worry about getting enough.

So much more then amazing food
Really had a good time during this walking tour. The food was plenty (too much actually since we were with a small group but the guide wanted us to taste a lot). But it was more then a food tour. Olivia is a good guide and I believe she is flexible in what she tells depending on the questions of her clients. So we also got a fair view into local live and culture. Really interesting. The food was great. Not really adventurous but really tasty. And I also got good feedback on how to pick the quality places when returning to the hawker centers myself.

Great experience trying lots of dishes and a fantastic guide
We did the 4pm - 7pm tour in Chinatown and made 3-4 stops at various hawker centres and restaurants. Our guide Olivia was knowledgeable about food and Singapore/Chinese history more generally. It was very relaxing, not rushed and we got to try a good range of food. Definitely plenty of food on offer - we were stuffed by the end! I thought was very good value for how much food and drink we had. I live in Singapore so am very happy that I now know places to get some amazing food in future.

      Bring an empty stomach!
This was such a great experience! We were the only 2 in the party so it was practically like a private guide. Gene asked us a few questions before starting in order to gauge what kind of foods we’d like. He was able to cater everything around our tastes. We had everything from Michelin Star rated Soy Sauce Chicken plate to finishing the night with satay skewers at Lau Pa Sat. Make sure to bring a super empty stomach! Gene was also kind enough to give us local Singapore tips and escorted us towards the hotel! Big thumbs up to Gene and Original Food Tours for arranging such a wonderful experience!

Best way to be introduced to Singapore hawker food
Adventurous food-wise, but cautious of food safety, I found this to be the perfect solution for my introductory experience. Our guide Keith is a real local and "foodie," and he introduced us to all the best Singapore food stalls have to offer. Come extremely hungry, because there is a LOT of food offered, and if you have a portable fan, bring it and wear cool, loose fitting clothers. The hawker markets are not air-conditioned, and it was hot and humid.

A Fantastic and Delicious Food Tour
My tour guide, Eisler, was informative about food and Singapore. I very much enjoyed his company and insights into Singapore. My only regret is doing this tour on the night before I left. I wanted to go back to the markets we went to but didn't have the time!

Fantastic walking food tour with Olivia
We had a great night and learnt so much about Singapore’s hawker food culture and way of life in general. The venues selected were all fantastic and very different. Without Olivia’s knowledge, we wouldn’t have known where to visit or what to order! Highly recommended.

fantastic walking food tour with Gene Gerard
Had a great experience with Gene Gerard on this hawker food tour. The food chosen was simply delicious, and the guide was not only very knowledgeable but also engaging and a pleasure to hang out with, and was very generous with his time. I learned a lot about Singapore traditions in general, and specific street food in particular.A highly recommended tour and guide!!!

Tasted So Good, Learned So Much
Olivia was our guide and we learned so much about Singapore and it’s food. At the end, we counted up: 9 different food items and four different drinks. I appreciated that there was no stunting on the quantities offered. We couldn’t eat all that was offered. One change I would make: some time and effort was spent tasting the Darian fruit-a weird fruit that smells gross and whose taste is hated by most westerners. We were well prepared with plastic gloves so we wouldn’t stink up our skin or clothes. Interesting and xperience but I would have rather had more food that tasted good. Still, all told, I highly recommend the experience and Olivia. Not cheap but you get what you pay for.

Great night, great guide, great food
We had the pleasure of having Olivia take us on this food adventure for the evening and it was a fantastic night. We got to learn so much, not just about the food but also local history, culture and day to day way of life in Singapore. The food Olivia chose for us was great, there was one local dish we weren't overly keen on but we tried everything and glad we did. We had more than enough food over the night, in fact there were a couple more dishes that Olivia had mentioned we would be sampling but we were so full we didnt get through all of them but can now go and try for ourselves. The tour is a walking tour and we went to a few different locations but all close to each other and very easy walking. The meeting instructions were spot on and Olivia escorted us back to MRT station so we could them easily find our way back to our accommodation. It was a great way to learn about the local cuisine and where to find it. We have already been back to a couple of the food centres ourselves and tried more dishes and all have been great. Olivia tailored the dishes to our tastes, the whole night ran very smoothly and Olivia was loads of fun. Would highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting to learn about local cuisine and where to find it at local prices.

      Fabulous day!
Upon landing in Singapore, we headed to the historic Katong district for a wonderful experience learning about this historic area and sampling an amazing array of foods all within a few blocks! Katong is a bit out of the center but really historic and where the real Singapore lives. There were only two of us in the group so we received amazing attention from our lovely guide (Eisler?) who was prepared with napkins, water, utensils, plates and lots of helpful tips. . As a chef himself, our guide knew so much about the source and preparation of all that we sampled. Go hungry as you will be stuffed! Well worth the time and $.

      Katon walking food tour
This tour was a highlight of my trip to Singapore, our tour guide Mr Soheil was extremely knowledgeable about the history and also the food of this part of Singapore, this tour show you different part of Singapore which is more authentic and less tourist. It will take u away from the high rises of Singapore, the experience was something I didn’t expect and I’m very glad I chose this tour , a little different. I wish I had more time to take their other tours as well. Very impressed with the tour guide and his knowledge. Highly recommend this tour and the tour company

      Casual, friendly and well-paced
Our guide Elaine was lovely... we were in a small group of 7 and had a great tour of all the Chinatown highlights while learning so much about the history and culture of Singapore. There was no pressure to buy anything at any stalls/shops that we visited, but I’m really glad we grabbed some spices from The Spice Man at the market - can’t wait to cook with them at home. We had plenty to eat without feeling ridiculously full. We’d happy recommend.
