- 696wyattg0 contributionsAmazing Ecuador Mtb tripA giant thank you to Christian and the team. This trip was beyond my expectation. The views, the rides the support, meals and haciendas were all outstanding and a surprise was every afternoon to have a cultural or sightseeing activity to round out the day. An amazing experience!Written 20 November 2024
- Emhyou0 contributionsIncredible Ecuador trip!I had the best time on the Active Ecuador 8 day trip! I traveled solo and happened to be the only one signed up for the trip. Activexpedition will still run a trip even for one person! What an unbelievable week! Pre-trip: Communication was great, and the sales team was quick to respond to any questions. The company provided a detailed itinerary with a packing list. The actual trip was very well organized, and they pivoted quickly if anything came up. For example, some rains washed out some spots on certain roads and the guide (more on him below) diligently checked with other friends and colleagues and unofficial reports on road conditions to make sure it didn’t delay us or require a detour. They picked great and unique places to stay. Each one was very comfortable and enjoyable! It was also easy to send out for laundry service in Banos (about midway), so you can pack lighter (and only a few dollars per kg to have it done). Guide: Daniel was a phenomenal guide. He was professional, knowledgeable, and funny. He went out of his way to make sure I had the best experience. I felt extremely safe with him the whole time. He built in many special little details and went above and beyond. For example, I went during Halloween/the Day of the Dead, and Daniel arranged a traditional bread decorating and Colada experience for me. Activities: It is really hard to pick out what I liked most. I had so much fun doing everything. There is flexibility in many of the activities. For example, I am not a strong cyclist, so at my request, we started at the top of the mountain and skipped the initial uphill part (there is a safety car behind you the whole time). I am also an adrenaline junkie, so Daniel took me to one of the extreme swings in Banos. During caving, he gave me the option between regular cave and crazy cave, and the crazy one was incredible! Each night, he would brief me in detail on the exact schedule for the next day, including the timeline and what to wear/pack. He also built in more activities that weren’t on the itinerary, such as visiting a monkey island, where you saw different types of monkeys up close. Difficulty/Fitnesss: I was not in the best shape (desk job, “walking the dog” shape), and it wasn’t an issue. Physical activities were a fun challenge, but only 2-3 hrs a day, and doesn’t require peak physical fitness. So don’t let that stop you! And as mentioned above, they can tailor them to your comfort level. I have some prior knee injuries and wear a soft brace, and I didn’t have trouble with anything (Daniel would tell me which ones he recommended the brace for). I also get motion sickness, and Daniel would let me know which days involved taking windy roads so I could take Dramamine to prep. Food/drink: Ecuador has delicious food, and Daniel will make sure you get the opportunity to try different local foods and beverages. For example, he showed me around Banos and stopped at a local candy maker and pointed out different types of local candy. There’s fresh fruit juice at just about every meal. During one drive, Daniel randomly stopped at this unmarked house, and it turned out to be a small moonshine distillery where Daniel showed you how they made their fruit moonshine and you could buy a bottle (delicious). Final thoughts: I have traveled to over 20 countries (some with tours, some self-planned), and I would rank this as my favorite (or tied for my favorite). Couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I’ll definitely be looking into their other trips in the future. Thanks so much Daniel and Activexpedition!Written 3 November 2024
- mwsaelee0 contributionsGreat Amazon kayaking tripI did a 4 day kayaking trip in the Amazon with this tour company. I had a pleasure of being on this trip with Daniel (tour guide) and Churi (cook, caiman hunter, multitalented extraordinaire). The basic accommodation is better than basic in my opinion with a clean bathroom (with shower!) and an actual bed. I felt cared for and got to experience the Amazon at its fullest. Daniel is knowledgeable and loves being a tour guide. You can feel the care and enthusiasm as a result. Couldn't have asked for more. One tiny improvement could be the company's clear information on bus options from Quito to El Coca in the future. It was a bit confusing as a person who doesn't know much Spanish even with extensive research online. Daniel was very helpful in this regard.Written 3 October 2024
- mattwI6677WA0 contributionsAmazing week long journey through Ecuador descending from huge volcanoes and experiencing Ecuadorian culture & cuisine. My son and I had an incredible time on this moutain biking adventure through Ecuador! It's extremly well thought out and our guide, Christian Valens was extremely knowledgeable about not only mountain biking in the region, but about Ecuadorian culture/cuisine, the South American eco-system and what makes Ecudor's different regions so unique. The week long journey takes you North for a couple days, exploring areas at lower elevation levels (after we acclimatized in Quito), then traveling South and descending from volcanos at higher elevations - Cotopaxi, Quilatoa and Chimborazo. Each day builds on the last with types of terrain, skillset and elevation - all with incredible scenery and breathtaking views. Christian and our drivers, Daniel and Jose, were extremely well coordinated and didn't miss a beat providing meals during the day, planned stops at cool spots to exeprience local food/snacks and accomodations were taken care of before hand making check-in smooth after a day of riding - the haciendas are super cool. Whatever level mountain biker you are, there is opportnity to learn and improve as well as conquer new types of terrain on this trip. A great mix of flowy trails, climbing, x-country/enduro and downhill riding made the terrain challenging and really enjoyable throughout the week. This is an awesome trip to experience many different parts of Ecuador, descend thousands of feet from some of the tallest mountains in the world - all with a world class crew. Thank you Christian, Daniel and Jose for making this such a memorable and amazing trip! See you soon, MattWritten 22 September 2024
- beckysZ5900XK0 contributionsAmazing trip to get a taste of all Ecuador has to offerAmazing trip! I can’t say enough wonderful things about the trip and about our guide. From hiking to rafting to biking to wildlife watching, every day was a new adventure. Travel and accommodations were great, and we felt perfectly safe no matter where we were.Written 16 September 2024
- Q1487DWlisas0 contributionsAll killer no filler!Great people, great scenery and great food! Every day had gorgeous views, was action packed, and I can’t pick a favorite activity! Our guide went above and beyond to show us extra things that were specific to our interests, like a side trip to some lagoons for wildlife and swimming, extra bird excursions, and even arranged for us to eat Guinea pig and grubs!! Can’t wait to go back!Written 9 September 2024
- bobbic9280 contributionsAwesome trip to Ecuador! We had an awesome time in Ecuador. All the planned activities were so much fun from trekking in the mountains to rafting and canyoning in the Amazon. We went to aazing places, ate delicious food and saw cool birds and plants. Our guide Christian was wonderful. Once he got to know us he suggested addition activities. Can't wait for my next adventure with Activexpedition!Written 8 September 2024
- Q3735CDspencerb0 contributionsAn Active Expedition! It’s in the name! This Ecuador adventure was a fantastic and thrilling experience. Fun activities and spectacular views every single day. Daniel Maldonado was our humorous bilingual local-guide, making constant adjustments to make sure our trip was smooth sailing. Weather had an impact to areas which relocated our itinerary to other cities with equal if not better activities. I will always remember this truly fascinating active expedition. I would recommend this trip to all personnel, activity adaptations are made based on liveliness.Written 30 June 2024
- Departure521017022870 contributionsAn amazing trip of a lifetimeChristian from Active Expeditions planned a trip of a lifetime in Ecuador and Peru. A private tour for my partner and I both in our early 60s. We mountain biked, hiked up active volcanoes, amazing bird watching, zip lined, whitewater rafting, tubing and so much more. The tour was active with plenty of down time. We learnt a lot about the culture and met many locals. I would highly recommend Active Expeditions as they were fantastic.Written 15 June 2024
- 433elliottk0 contributionsCome for the adventure, stay for the peopleMy partner and I have been doing trips like these over the past few years and have been completely sold at this point that we have to do an active trip with a guide every year now. If you’re looking for the validation to book the trip, here it is! You’ll spend your trip split between the Andes going on challenging hikes, biking through beautiful mountain landscapes, climbing up the vertical faces of waterfalls, hanging out with eccentric locals, and maybe even eat a big bug or two if you’re up for it. The trip is one whirlwind, nonstop action fest so get a good nights sleep (won’t be hard— the places you’ll stay are top) and a snack— maybe an ice cream from the ice cream town. You’ll come to see the sights but you’ll feel like you left with life long friendship with those you come in contact with. And isn’t that worth more than the price of entry? Yes.Written 31 May 2024
- etherealemcap0 contributionsTrip of a lifetime! If you’re thinking about booking through Active Ecuador, don’t hesitate! My boyfriend and I just had the most epic adventure with them, and it was hands down one of the best trips ever. Our guide, Christian, was absolutely amazing and made the whole experience unforgettable. From the get-go, Christian’s passion for Ecuador and his knowledge of the area was obvious. He made us feel like we were exploring with a friend, not just a tour guide. The activities were seriously awesome – hiking through stunning landscapes to discovering hidden gems we’d never have found on our own. Active Ecuador blew us away. If you’re looking for a rad adventure in Ecuador with top-notch service and unforgettable moments, this is it. With guides like Christian, you’re in for an amazing experience that you’ll remember forever. Thanks, Active Ecuador, for the trip of a lifetime!Written 28 May 2024
- X3744ZKnataliet0 contributionsGreat trip and great guides! Memories for life!I could not recommend this trip more! The guides were amazing, the places we went to were stunning and the activities were so much fun! During my trip I went biking, swimming, canyoning, snorkelling, rafting, canoeing, stand up paddle boarding and hiking! And if there is anything you don’t want to do, or do more of you can always personalise your trip which is great! The guides are knowledgeable and can answer any question, and all the guides I had spoke English well. They’re great company and always made sure i was safe. It’s a perfect trip to see different parts of what the country has to offer starting off in Quito, then to Galapagos, then to the jungle and finishing off in the Andes. I made memories for life and will definitely come back and spend more time in this wonderful country. As a female solo traveler who wanted to visit Ecuador it was perfect! I always felt safe and looked after, and it was nice having the reassurance that there was always someone there to help me and look after me. I absolutely loved it! It is such an easy way of exploring a country, learning about culture and history whilst always having things to do.Written 25 April 2024

- I9183PRnoram0 contributionsExploring Ecuador Volcanoes by bikeWe were very impressed by our Activexpedition tour, which included exploring the areas at the bases of iconic volcanoes such as Cotopaxi and Chimborazo. As cyclists with mostly road and cross-country experience, some of the downhill trails were a bit challenging, but it was a good mix of surfaces and our guide Oscar was very patient and supportive along the way. During the week-long tour, we enjoyed biking beneath the shadow of giant volcanoes (lucky enough to see the peaks!), through lush agricultural fields, past quaint villages and through cloud forests. Highlights were the animals along the way (mostly horses, sheep, cows, pigs, dogs and the occasional llama), fresh fruit at every meal, trails to ourselves (didn't encounter many other tourists), a fun variety of accomodations, and breathtaking views around every corner. Our guide Oscar and driver Jorge took very good care of us along the way and made sure that our experience was memorable and safe.Written 18 February 2024
