Best tour company in Peru!
Nov 2021 • Solo
A perfect trip, run by an incredible company. This is the tour company you must use if booking a trip in Peru. From start to finish Killa Expeditions runs a fantastic operation. It starts at the top with Jose/Nicole answering questions quickly and passionately. When you arrive Nyra in the office coordinating everything to make sure everything runs smoothly. I had Frank as my guide, who was the beat guide I’ve had during any of my travels. He is funny, smart and just a really great guy to hang out with. The trek was spectacular, endless mountain scenery. Frank helped carry my drone and walked at my pace. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the landscape, current events, history, ancient history and everything in-between. I had Andres as a cook and it’s amazing the delicious food he can make in the makeshift camping kitchen, will be the best food you eat in Peru. The horsemen worked extremely hard, setting up camp quickly and helping out in any way they could. All 5 star reviews tells you all you need to know about this company. Reach out to them and book your trip you will not be disappointed.

Wow! Killa put on a great trek and saved my life.
Sep 2021
I can't say enough great things about Killa and this trek. First the trek is amazing, Killa takes care of everything, they communicated well, the equipment is top notch. The guide and support group know their stuff. The support staff back in Cusco is extremely helpful and knowledgeable. The trek looks amazing on the screen and is even better in real life. Dress warm and train well. This is a hard, trek, at very high altitudes. Also you will be fed better on the trail than you are probably at home. All homemade, fresh, Peruvian food.

I unfortunately got seriously ill on the trek and had to be taken from the mountain. Killa arranged everything. They set up doctor appointments back in Cusco. They negotiated with the doctors and told me everything that was happening. I don't think I would have survived without Killa. They could have dropped me off at clinic and said "good luck" but they were with me all the way until I got to the airport.

Truly a fantastic, well run, compassionate company. You could do no better by going with a different expedition firm for all your trekking needs in Cusco.

Excellent experience with Killa
May 2021
My husband and I did the Ausangate and Rainbow mountain trek with Killa in May 2021.

Even before our trek began, I had some email exchanges with Nicole and Lucia from Killa who were nothing but extremely helpful and answered all my questions in a very timely fashion, alleviating all my concerns.

Our crew in Peru consisted of our guide - Frank, 2 horsemen and 2 cooks. Our experience with the team was fantastic and we have absolutely no complaints.

Frank is an extremely knowledgeable, friendly and helpful guide and the days we spent on the trek with him were excellent. The cooks(Daniel and Sergio) were amazing and we were spoiled with a wide variety of delicacies even in such remote locations that left us asking for more.

Everyday, we woke up to stunning vistas right outside our tents and were given some hot coca tea and water. After freshening up, a huge breakfast would set us up for the hike. Frank would factor in breaks at very convenient times where we could recharge and head on. Lunch would be again, setup at a very apt time where we would sit and chat with the group and have some delicious Peruvian food. Our days would end before sunset and the tents would be pitched by the amazing crew and would be waiting for us at the campsite. After a scrumptious dinner, we would call it a day.

Our 4 day hike went by like a breeze with no hitch. Killa rocks!

Ausangate 3 day trek
May 2021 • Solo
Trip Advisor - Killa Expeditions
3 day customized Ausangate Trek

I just completed a magical 3 day (customized) Ausangate trek with Killa Expeditions and give Killa Expeditions my highest endorsement.

Context and origin of trip:
I booked my trip to Peru last minute to join friends and learned of the spiritual Ausangate trek while here (known as the most spiritual trek in Peru). I researched Ausangate trek itineraries online, and learned of Killa Expeditions through an travel blog where the person had completed the typically 5 day Ausangate trek in 4 days and had great things to say about Killa Expeditions. I reached out to Killa Expeditions and asked if a 3 day trek on just a few days notice was possible (personal preference), because, why not? I am an endurance athlete that would have had some time to acclimatize by the time the trek started (a total of 2 days at 8-9k feet and 2 days at 11k feet with a final day trip to Rainbow Mountain reaching ~17k feet), and so trusted that I could physically complete the trek if the logistics were manageable. I spoke with Jose at Killa Expeditions who made everything happen seamlessly, and was willing to take my word that I would able to complete the trek at a faster pace than the treks they typically organize (concern is not distance covered but the high elevation -  average altitude is ~14-17k feet, or ~4-5.2k meters).

The team:
We started the ~30-40 mile trek on a Friday and completed the trek Sunday afternoon. My family for 3 days included Guido (our guide), Sergio (our chef), and Leonides (our horseman), all locals, who treated me like a princess and showed me great kindness throughout the trip. For example, it was very cold at night, and each night I was given a rubber bladder filled with hot water to warm my sleeping bag. Guido had tremendous knowledge of local culture and customs and patiently helped me practice Spanish, Sergio was a brilliant chef, and worked seamlessly and tirelessly with Leonides our horseman packing and unpacking at each rest site.

The landscape and scenery:
The trek itself offered the most beautiful and dramatic landscape and scenery I have seen - for reference I have previously hiked in the Alps and Rockies. Each day we saw snow capped mountains, changing topography, mineral exposed mountains, glaciers, lagoons, and miles and miles of rolling green fields and valleys. The high altitude passes featured tributes and offerings to the surrounding mountains. There were lots of Alpacas and friendly dogs, and local Andean people farming at these very high altitudes along the way.  For the first 2 days, the only people I saw on the trail, besides my Killa family, were local Andean people (+ no internet/cell service). On the last day near the end of the hike I saw two different guided groups of people doing day hikes. I have never before experienced such peace and solitude.

Structure of the day:
Killa Expeditions arranged transportation from my hotel to the start of the trek; the team was prompt and fully prepared. Upon arrival, we ate breakfast and equipment/packs were loaded onto the horses. I walked with Guido until lunch (Sergio and Leonides passed us along the way and had set up lunch prior to our arrival). We finished lunch and started walking while Sergio and Leonides packed everything, passed us yet again along the way, and by such a great margin they had set up the campsite and started cooking dinner by the time we arrived. My tent, dry bag and hot water/a towel for refreshing awaited my arrival shortly before a 3 course meal was served by Sergio. Each day, we continued in this cadence: I was woken at 6am, greeted with coca tea and hot water for refreshing, a 3 course breakfast ~ 7am, trekking departure ~8am, a 3 course lunch ~12-2pm, more trekking, arrival at the campsite ~5-630pm, and a 3 course dinner ~7pm.

The food:
I am still SO impressed by the food Sergio was able to create, in a tent, and at such high altitude with such few tools. The food was plentiful, fresh, healthy, and delicious. Breakfast for example included toast, scrambled eggs, hot porridge (bean or quinoa), a variety of tea and coffee options.  For our first lunch we started with fresh fried tortilla strips and guacamole. Each meal was 3 courses, often began with hot delicious soup, and included a healthy and diverse array of carbohydrates (vegetables, rice, quinoa) and protein (chicken, beef, fresh trout), often prepared Peruvian style. For my last breakfast, Sergio baked an Ausangate cake symbolizing the end of the journey, which he decorated with frosting, caramel accents, fresh strawberries, and sprinkles. Even though my appetite was affected by the high altitude, it was so delicious I had 3 slices, and I was so touched by the attention to decorative detail I almost cried.

Guido:
Guido had tremendous and deep knowledge of the local customs and symbolism of the hike. He taught me quite a bit in our short time together ranging: wildlife spotting, farming techniques of the Incan and Andean peoples, history of the people who have settled the region, religious symbolism and customs of the Incans and local Andean people, present day ways of life, significance and symbolism of various landmarks for rituals and spiritual offerings, dinner table Spanish, and even the technique for making the last Incan grass bridge which he demonstrated using grass found on the trail.

Summary:
Completing the Ausengate trek with Killa Expeditions is one of the most memorable travel experiences I have had to date. The scenery was breathtaking, and I felt safe, protected, cared for throughout the trip. Besides the physical strain of hiking at high altitude, everything about the trip felt comfortable, easy and luxurious.

Noteworthy:
Killa Expeditions provided the equipment I needed for the trip including a dry pack, sleeping bag, headlamp, and trekking poles. Also, they always bring emergency oxygen, and have a horse available to send people to lower altitudes in case of emergency/altitude sickness (not needed). I did experience mild altitude effects, and Diamox helped a lot.

The best full service outfit we have used!
Jan 2021 • Couples
We did the Asungante trek and added the two day Inca trail. We visited Rainbow Mountain as well.

Jose was the first person we contacted from Killa. We contacted him through WhatsApp and he responded immediately. He was very helpful and talked me though all my concerns. Even when I texted him multiple times, he was very patient.

Frank was our guide and he was nothing short of excellent. On the third night we had a snowstorm and the trails were covered. I was a little worried, but Frank still lead us and knew exactly where to go.

He was very knowledgeable about the route, the mountains, weather, and the locals. He was a great communicator and would always let us know what to expect daily.

He was very patient and a great communicator. His English was great as well.

Our cook Sergio made sure we have different meals everyday. We had three course meals for every meal and it was different every time. We also were given snacks and hot tea whenever we finished for the day. We were amazed by how he could cook so many different dishes with only what you could carry on a horse. The best was the fresh cake at the end! Amazing!

Milton lead the emergency horse and was always ready in case we needed him. He was patient and very helpful.

We had a crew of 5 - Frank our guide, Sergio our cook. We also had Fernando and rocky and Milton who worked with the team and were excellent! We had hot water delivered to our tent to wash up. They also delivered hot drinks every morning. On the morning it snowed, they still brought it to us to make it comfortable for us. Nightly we had a hot water bottle that they prepared “Waa Waa” to help keep us warm.

The office staff - Neyra made all the accommodations perfect. She booked everything including Machu Picchu and the train and secured all our permits. Even when we changed plans last minute for a city tour of Puno she booked all our transportation last minute.

We also did the 2 day Inca trail with Killa. Frank was very knowledgeable about the historic site and even made drawings and brought illustrations to help us imagine the history of the site.

Killa Expeditions is definitely a great team and they work like a well oiled machine!

I cannot say enough about everyone at Killaexpeditions. If there were more than five stars to allocate, then I would. From the wonderful communication pre trip, to the side tours, to the amazing staff of horsemen and chef/tent/general trip men, and of course our wonderful guides Guido and Americo, it was a faultless and incredible experience. The food, oh the food (including a fully iced and delicious cake at 16’000ft) was some of the best I’ve had, and the continual smiles and helpfulness of everyone involved made this adventure one that will stay in my memories of affection for years to come.
A special shout out to our guides Guido and Americo for bringing such an upbeat spirit to our group. You are both exceptional people, and Killa is so very fortunate to have you on their team. I’ll be back next year for another adventure with you, and will recommend you wholeheartedly.
