- N6630KJleonardog0 contributions100% recommendedRamiro and Darwin were very competent and friendly, every step of the journey was very clear. Always happy to happy those in need and answer any questions. The food was abundant and great quality, accommodations were comfy, the views absolutely breath taking. An incredible adventure!Written 1 December 2024
- Adam-Rebecca20210 contributionsSacred Valley Day TourWe had an amazing tour of the sacred valley. Our guide David Castro was so knowledgeable and fun. The Inca sites were fascinating and well worth visiting.Written 30 November 2024
- stevelevine40 contributionsThe mountain king 🤴Carlos the mountain king was an amazing guide for our trek. Happy to give the Salkantay trek and experience a 5 star review. Very professional company that was organized and easy to work with. They were great at communicating before our trek answering all our questions. We didn't have a single complaint. We got the best guide we could have hoped for. He was great at taking care of the safety of our group and kept everyone positive the entire time. He was very well versed in Peruvian culture and proudly presented it to us. Thank you Mountain king and Salkantay trekking for our amazing experience.Written 30 November 2024
- victoriagI3632JD0 contributionsJust wowHow do I begin. To start, it was absolutely incredible! But we have to give a HUGE thanks to our tour guide for the amazing experience we did have. Ricardo, you are truly an amazing person with so much knowledge and you absolutely made our trip! You made us feel like home, steered us in the right direction (North of course, lol) and gave us unforgettable memories! To everyone, if you’ve ever experienced a crap backpacking trip, hopefully this will ease your minds bc not one thing was bad about this. To our horseman, Alberto, thank you for transporting everything and keeping it nice and dry. We saw you working incredibly hard and it showed! Moises, you are an amazing chef and you kept us alive! If you are thinking you are getting rations and will have to live off of your snacks then you got this wrong. We had 3 absolutely delicious meals everyday, along with a happy hour and snacks and morning tea! To not have to think about any of this was a huge weight off of whats normally my husband’s job on trips. He actually got to enjoy himself, lol! The accommodations were awesome! No showers the first night but honestly you’re at such a high elevation, nothing felt wrong about that. The next two nights you did have a private bathroom with a shower. And I will not say anything bad bc it’s a shower and it’s private. All the beds were comfortable, you got a space to relax and there were no lurking creatures. The hotel in Aguas Calientes was great! Great place to spend some time if you have it. There’s a lot more to the town than you expect! Along the trail it was nice to have stores! That was something we’ve never experienced before and it was a nice break from the hike if you were waiting for the rest of your group. Bring more soles with you than you think! The restrooms were 1-2 soles if they were not at a restaurant. Beers were around 10. There were plenty of opportunities for snacks, other drinks, water, etc. Now the hiking part, you may think day 2 is the hard one….it’s really not. Is it long, yes, but effort wise, the uphill is not as bad as you think. There is an option to take a horse/mule to the top (uphill travel only). The 10 miles downhill was a little brutal but again, not as bad as you think. Personally, I found day 4 to be the “most challenging” but very doable. We did not find any day to be overwhelming. It was a great change of scenery from the high alpine to the jungle. We honestly got the perfect weather conditions so I would not be able to speak to any other time of the year (we started our trek Nov 24th for reference). The humidity was not horrible, the temperatures were nice, we did have rain but if you hike fast enough you miss some of that lol. You can make this hike what you want of it. I think we put in over 40 miles over the 5 days and there was a choice to do more if you wish! And we actually got amazing pictures at Machu Picchu without the fog coverage! But it was taking a chance that happened to work out for us. 10/10 recommend, even for non seasoned travelers like us. Salkantay made this super easy and we would definitely do another one with them!Written 29 November 2024
- 264ver_nicai0 contributionsBeyond being an unforgettable personal experience, our guide, and the chef, contributed greatly to makeing it soIt was an unforgettable experience, beyond forecast. The landscapes I witnessed were incredible. It is essential to be in good physical shape; otherwise, I believe that inste as of enjoying it, you will endure it. I want to thank our guide, Fredy Vapaza, for his kindness, good humor, and patience with each of us. Additionally, for sharing his knowledge and passion for Inca culture. I also want to mention the chef, Efraín Manchego, who, through every meal—breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner—showed his passion for food with the variety of dishes he prepared.Written 29 November 2024

- Q6359CUashleyf0 contributions4-Day Salkantay with the Mountain KingMy partner and I recently completed the 4 day Salkantay Trek and it was an amazing experience. Our guide, Carlos (aka the Mountain King) was warm, funny, and an outstanding lead for the group. We would have missed out on so much without Carlos by our side. He shared his personal insights into the local culture, his knowledge of the. region’s history, and natural surroundings, which truly enriched the 4-Day journey. The Chefs kept us well-fueled - The food was tasty, diverse and true to Peruvian cuisine. The campsites offered stunning views of the mountains and star lit skies! The combination of great guiding, cultural immersion, tasty meals, and breathtaking landscapes made this trek unforgettable. If you’re travelling to Peru and looking for an adventure, I would highly recommend!Written 28 November 2024
- 288rebeckan0 contributionsA Magical Andean AdventureI joined the 4-Day Salkantay Trek as a solo traveller. I booked the trip 3 months in advance and they were very helpful with answering all my questions and also sent out detailed information to prepare for my trip. The company, the staff, chefs and our guide, Orlando, were professional, friendly and very helpful from organising all the behind the scene details to the actual trek itself. The trek was physically challenging but there is also the option to hire a horse for a part of the trek up to the Salkantay mountain pass. They were kind and patient if at times if you walked a slower pace but they make it an important priority that you have an enjoyable time. The hike to Humantay Lagoon was stunning and beautiful. It was a tough hike up but definitely worth the views. This trek was also a great opportunity to commune with the Andean nature with the safety and guidance of Salkantay Trek. The Sky Camp and Mountain Sky View accommodations had fantastic views and you feel so immersed in the nature. The company took great care and covered all the logistics and details of the trek from transporting the duffle bags for your things, snacks, water and rain poncho. The meals were delicious and filling and you can tell the chef made it with love and joy. You get to discover so much on this trek. Truly an unforgettable experience and beautiful memories for life.Written 28 November 2024
- C6702LAcodyg0 contributionsTrip of a lifetimeWe did the 5 day premium Salkantay trek. It was worth every dollar to do premium. It made the experience much better and less complicated. Our guide Ricardo was a 10/10. I would highly suggest recommending him if you decide to book. He was knowledgeable, on time and full of fun making our trip even more memorable. He was helped by Alberto our cowboy who kept our gear dry and together dying the journey through some unpredictable weather and Moses our chef . If there was a Michelin star for camp chefs Moses deserves one. Each one of our meals was different, fresh and perfectly presented . The accommodations at each stop were beyond what we expected with spectacular views and top notch cleanliness . Some of the days were challenging but having the support of the team and many village stores along the way made it much easier . If you are considering doing trek like this I would choose Salkantay with this team to ensure you maximize your expertise.Written 28 November 2024

- Meghan F0 contributionsCarlos the Mountain King is the best tour guide! The Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu was an unforgettable adventure! The breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains, lush jungles, and serene lakes made every step worth it. Carlos the Mountain King was knowledgeable and supportive, ensuring the group felt safe and informed throughout the challenging yet rewarding hike. He made sure everyone was well taken care of and even made accommodations to those of us who wanted to take a horse for part of the trek. The meals provided were delicious and vegetarian friendly which I was so thankful for, our chefs were amazing! The accommodations, especially the glass domes under the stars, added a magical touch. Reaching Machu Picchu after such an epic journey made the experience even more meaningful. I highly recommend this trek to anyone seeking a unique and enriching way to visit this wonder. - daviddM6880GS0 contributionsThe most amazing Salkantay TrekThe entire trip was amazing, we went during the beginning of the rainy season but the rain/clouds/fog would come and go so we were able to see everything. Carlos “the mountain king” was our guide and he was so friendly, knowledgeable, and fun. He taught us so much about Inca history/culture and his Quechua heritage. I couldn’t recommend him enough, we had a blast!Written 28 November 2024

What an experience! This trek has been one of the big highlights of our 12 month round-the-world trip. My favorite part of the trip was our group, everyone was so nice and I felt we were part a team. Our trek leader Carlos (The Mountain King) was the glue that gelled us together, he was fantastic at making sure we all brought good energy to the group, he made sure everyone was included in his jokes and no one was left behind on the hike. Carlos woke us up each morning with a cup of hot Coca Tea in bed (literally!) this made the 4.30am wake ups much more bearable.
The food on this trek was also incredible, some of the tastiest I've had in Peru. Our Chefs Mr Yangas and Oscar made sure we never went hungry and impressed us at each meal with the array of options for vegans, veggies and meat eaters. Im often a 'picky eater' but the flavors were really delicious. You don't need to bring any extra snacks as so much food is provided, 5pm everyday is 'happy hour' which consisted of more snacks and selection of freahly made juices.
This trek is definitely HARD on the body and I would recommend you are in decent shape to really enjoy it. I'm hitting 40 and found the downhill sections pretty grueling due to an old knee injury. However, Carlos was really kind and professional in arranging a lift for me so I could rest my knee by skiping the morning downhill section on day 4. I met our group at our lunch spot and carried on the hike from there which was a massive relief.
This hike is definitely as much about the journey as it is the destination. I would fully recommend it, you will sleep in the best accommodation, gain great memories and make new friends. All the trek leaders looked professional but make sure you ask for The Mountain King as your guide if you want the best.

What. An. Adventure! The Salkantay Trekking experience was INCREDIBLE. The food, the views, the company, and the planning were top notch. This was a trip that I’ve been wanting to do for 10 years now and it did not disappoint. Our group was filled with amazing people from all around the world which made the company even more awesome than the views. While you may not strike gold with the group you have like we did, you may be able to request our tour guide and let me tell you about Carlos ‘the Mountain King’!
Credit for the immaculate group synergy our tour group had has to go to Carlos ‘TMK’. Carlos is a great leader that embodies the perfect balance of professionalism and fun! His positive energy and laughs were contagious and everlasting. Carlos was patient and extremely resourceful/motivational when helping the slower members in our group, all the while ensuring the fast members were entertained and taken care off. He is very knowledgeable about the Inca and Peruvian culture and was able to answer all the questions we were able to throw his way. Carlos was quick to credit the fantastic Chefs (Juan Carlo and Wilbur): who made the best food in terms of variety (all dietary restrictions) and taste you could hope for. The Horsemen (Manuel) made our trip a breeze by making sure all of our stuff was transported in time and with care to the next location. Carlos ‘TMK’ is the best tour guide we’ve ever had the pleasure of touring with and he made the Machi Picchu trip one of a kind. If you do book Salkantay trekking, I highly recommend asking for Carlos ‘TMK’! He will go above and beyond to make sure that you have the best experience possible.

To be able to put into words this experience has been difficult, because how does one describe a life changing trip. The anticipation of this trip has been that of a year long wait and the reality of the trek was more than I could have even imagined. It all started with our meet and greet with our guide Leo who prepared us for our 5 day trek providing details of the hiking/activities, along with words of wisdom for us to get the most out of this experience. This trip is what it was in large part to our guides Leo and Javier who provided us with not only safe guidance through all terrains but provided us with history, culture, good conversation, encouragement and friendship. We had an amazing staffing team starting from the friendly faces in the Salkantay office to our horse man, chefs, and of course our guides. To have our guides Leo and Javier gather, draw the attention of, and herd the 12 people in our group the entirety of the trek is a feat in itself, yet alone educate and inform us and hike along with us just shows their skills along with the passion they have for what they do. Our trip would not have been what it was without them.
This trip consisted of unique jaw dropping accommodations, delicious, filling, cultural food on the go (how the chefs were able to pull it all together was unbelievable, especially since it was always ready for us), and an immersion into the culture. Before the trek, the arrival at Machu Picchu had always been the big moment to look forward to, but now after the trek I can honestly say the entire trip was the big moment. If you ask me now what my favorite part of the trip would be, I can't pick just one. I will be forever thankful/grateful to have had this experience with 12 friends, Leo and Javier and will be reliving it through our video Leo made for us to recap this trip. I would recommend this trekking company to anyone who has any thought of performing a trek/visiting Peru. Peru will always have a special place in my heart!

What a beautiful description! After such a long wait and much anticipation, the trip was even better than you expected. Leo and Javier certainly are talented members of our team, along with the cooks, porters and office staff - always ready to go above and beyond for every trekker. :) One of our main goals, as a company, is to create unforgettable, life-changing experiences in the country that we love so much. We love to share it with visitors and feel so proud when they leave feeling impressed, surprised and fulfilled - like you! These mountains certainly have something special about them. Like you said, the beauty's in the journey! We'll be excited to receive you once again whenever you decide to come back to Peru for another amazing excursion! See you soon!

Salkantay Trekking is a very organized Company. My wife and I Just finished Classic Trek and it was all that we had hoped! Very challenging and I’ve trekked around the world and this one was one of the best experiences. Leo was our guide who made the actual logistics very smooth no matter what concerns each of the trekkers had, he was empathetic but very scheduled Lori’s a natural at guiding as he loves his city of cuzco, the history of Peru and all about the history of the Incas!! He had a plan for all unexpected needs and situations and would give several different options as if he has been doing this for a while. You can’t go wrong with getting Leo at Salkantay Trekking. The food was good!!
The only concern I have with making reservations is that they offer for you to purchase tickets to actually climb Machu Pichu and Hyuana Pichu. But on our last we toured Machu Pichu as a group. We didn’t want to part from the group and make them wait on us to leave back for the bus and then train. So alittle up front understanding from the reps as we made reservations would have been better. We just threw away two tickets( excursions for that day) to climb those mountains. Our bodies were tired after the 5 day trek and so we chose to not use our tickets and thus did not get reimbursement. Other than that, we had a wonderful group of now friends!! Cheers!!

Thank you very much for leaving us your comment. We know that Leo is an excellent guide and always tries to provide attention and good information to all our travelers. We are very happy to know that you enjoyed this wonderful experience with us. We understand that it can be a bit difficult to do the Salkantay Trek and there is not much energy left for the end, but reaching the goal is really rewarding. It was a pleasure to have accompanied you on this incredible journey. We send you a big hug.

We opted for the Premium 5 day / 4 night Salkantay Trek package. I can honestly say that we had an incredible experience thanks to the Salkantay Trekking team! Our guide, Vigner, was very professional and knowledgeable, considerate of everyone's needs and fitness levels, and blessed with a great sense of humor. He kept us all on time and ensured that we had a great experience, repeatedly beating the crowds at the popular destinations (such as Machu Picchu and the Hot Springs).
Each aspect of the trek is really thought out and all the logistics are very well taken care of, which I really appreciated. I really loved our stays for each night, especially the incredibly awesome Sky Camp with phenomenal views of the lush green mountains, the night sky and the stars! The Jungle Domes were incredible too! I also loved the very delicious food that we were treated to all through our hike (kudos to the chef for pulling this feat even with such challenging logistics!) -- this was especially incredible given my vegetarian dietary preference, and this has also led me to have a deeper appreciation for the Peruvian cuisine (which really was a bunus since I wasn't expecting such a special culinary experience over a trekking trip!). Each day of our hike was different (and special in its own way) in terms of the mileage / physical endurance needed, the landscape (alpine, cloud forests, archeological sites, etc), the vistas and the highlights. These 5 days stitched together offer an experience of a lifetime. I really appreciated how flawlessly every logistical detail was handled all through (from our permits, tickets for different sites, pick up and drop offs, the food, transport, etc). All in all, I cannot recommend Salkantay Trekking enough, and am grateful to them for having enabled such a memorable experience for my group!

My friend and I booked this 5D Salkantay Trekking Tour + Machu Picchu around one month in advance. We contacted the agency Salkantay Trekking via WhatsApp and Email. The costumer attention was ok but they would sometimes forget about the conversation and reservations we already made which was confusing sometimes.
They also asked for a prepayment that demanded an extra fee ($10)..When we came to the office in Cusco to pay the remaining amount the payment with credit card could only be made with another 5% extra charge. In cash the conversion rate they demanded was really bad so it got more expensive any way..
Also they were no very transparent concerning the circuits they offer you if you book Salkantay Trek and Machu Picchu. Better be sure to read the official website and make sure you get the circuit (and guiding tour) you want. The classic Machu Picchu view is obtained in circuit number 2.
Anyways..the tour itself was very well organised!! The evening before departure our guide Jorge gave us a very informative and detailed briefing! He was very experienced and was able to answer every question in detail and would give very good advice how to prepare and what to bring!
On the tour, everything went just perfect!! The infrastructure was just perfect, every transportation on time, meals ready when we arrived to the camp sites, duffle bags accessible when we needed them.
But since mist tour operators offer similar itineraries, the group and the guide make the difference!! Jorge our guide was JUST THE BEST!!! He made us grow together, looked after each one of us, would make sure that everybody was comfortable on the way and at each campsite. He was very interested in each group member and made sure individual needs were met(physical status in the trak or alimentary issues). Since he is very familiar with land and culture, he told us sooooo many interesting things on the way that we felt like we learned so much of flora, fauna, Inka culture and Peruvian lifestyle- just amazing!!

The 5 day experience was everything I was expecting. The price is very much worth it including everything that you will need. Ticket to Machu Picchu, transport (hotel transfers, train, bus), accomodation, all meals and of course the amazing tour guiding of the super helpful and professional tour guides at Salkantay.
We got assigned the most caring, friendly, supportive, patient and knowledgable guide: Karol Joset. We had challenges along the way, not only physical ones but emotional ones too, when the paths and trekking were endless and you felt like giving up there was Karol giving us advice, a friendly encouraging word or a nice pat in the back for motivation. He was very clear about everything that we will encounter in the trails and his briefings the night before each trek day, were clear and at times daunting but it gave us a clear understanding of what was to come to avoid surprises. He prioritises safety at all times so I always felt confident that he was prepared and at all times waited for each of us so we won't be left behind.
Aniceto and Evaristo as the chef and assistant chef were amazing and delighted us with the most tasty and authentic food, super nutritious and healthy, getting us ready with all we needed before long days of trekking, always with a smile. Considering that most days we started having breakfast at 5am it was amazing to see everything ready by then, this always made me appreciate them even more as probably they were cooking since 3am.
Our duffel bags arrived safely and dry each day at the camps thanks to the horse men Casimiro that also assisted some of our trekking friends to travel by horse to some difficult areas.
Lastly the accomodation was very pleasing bordering glamping but still with a touch of nature and rusticity. I loved waking up super early with a cup of coca tea and soak in the nature around us.
All in all I wouldn't hesitate in doing this experience again with Salkantay trekking. They think of everything and make a plan for every request you can come up with. Very accomodating and above all professional. Thank you Salkantay and to all the staff for making this experience a once in a lifetime!

We had a great experience with Salkantay trekking doing the classic 5d hike. Although the trail is a bit more crowdy/touristic (and expensive) than the hike we did in Huaraz, it has amazing scenery and is much more luxurious and better equipped. Each camp site was great (even including a shower and WiFi at some), and three times a day we got an amazing and abundant buffet by our cooks Andrea and Joseph. Amazing what they are able to make whilst also hiking, including pizza, a whole cake,... Our hike would have not been as great without our guide Felix. Felix pushed us just in the right way, often making us the first ones to arrive at a site, making sure we could admire it before others groups would arrive, and got us to our camping site early every day, where he further entertained us with stories about his childhood, love and horror stories from other hikes,... His passion for his culture and country were also contagious and I am grateful to have learned so much about Peru, the Inca empire and Quechua culture. He was also very helpful if people weren't feeling great with the altitude. Our team of mashed potatoes would definitely have been the crashed potatoes without him. Thank you Salkantay trekking and Felix for the amazing hike!

What a trip! If you are not aware of harder hikes or the altitude, this trip could get a problem for you but if you are fit, this is just awesome. It was well organized. Never had the feeling that the guides Carlos and Felix had no idea what will happen next. They took well care of the slower hikers and let the faster ones go their speed (at least from time to time, so the group does not split too far). Both of them got along with everyone in the group very well and that lead to a whole family feeling during these days. The food was not first class but on such a trip you canot expect that or you have to pay way more. But honestly, I do not need upper class tours for thousands of dollars to have a great experience. Till now this was one of my highlight hikes I’ve done so far and can highly recommend this to people who like to be outside for days and like to challenge themselves a bit, or a bit more.

We were looking for an outdoor hiking adventure that displayed the beauty of Peru and I am so glad we went with Salkantay Trekking. While the hikes were challenging, the company has put a lot of thought into the pacing so that each challenging day is bookended by a relatively light day. In addition, the first day starts with a trek designed to acclimate you to hiking at elevation which really helped to make subsequent days easier. I haven’t had much experience with hiking prior to this trip, yet I was able to climb to an elevation of over 15000 feet.
The hikes around Machu Picchu were truly breathtaking, and the experience was really made special by our tour guide, Carlos, the Mountain King. He educated us about the Incan culture and the spiritual relevance of Machu Picchu the whole time we were on the trip. His infectiously positive personality kept us going even when we were tired. He made sure we started the day early to get to sites along the way before the crowds. In addition, he made sure to connect with each and every one of us individually in a way that few people can do, especially in a group of 10 people.
The food along the way was a welcome surprise. I brought 10 pounds of snacks for the trek and ended up eating virtually none of them because the food was plentiful, safely prepared, and extremely good. Alejandro and Alfredo, the two chefs who traveled with us, did an excellent job ensuring we stayed well nourished and hydrated during the trip. Don’t go overboard like I did with the snacks: the carrying weight is not worth it.
Speaking of carrying weight, the company provides you with a duffel bag that you can fill with the majority of your gear so that all you have to carry is a few necessities for the hike itself, like water and a rain jacket. That duffel bag gets transported for you by either horse, car or train between camp sites which makes the trek much easier. The accommodations were stellar; my favorite were the sky domes on the first night, but honestly, all of them were great and certainly beat bringing and pitching your own tent.
All in all, I had a blast with this trip. If you’re looking to challenge your body and expand your mind, while leaving all the complicated logistics of trekking to the experts, look no further than Salkantay Trekking. ALSO, make sure to request Carlos, the Mountain King as your tour guide 😃

To be able to explore the trails of the Peruvian Andes and receive the best explanations from our great guide Carlos, is undoubtedly the perfect combination to have a wonderful experience. Also, we reinforce this wonderful journey with the best accommodations that only you deserve. Our exclusive Sky Camp, Mountain Sky View, and the other camps are exceptional. Each accommodation is made with the purpose of making our passenger feel as comfortable as possible around the mountains and enjoying the best views of the landscapes. Not only a good rest requires the traveler, because we think about your food and we know the interests and the different tastes of each one, we offer a diverse, delicious and abundant gastronomy for each traveler, because we know that you must recover the energy to continue on route and reach the goal. We send you a big hug, Marko and thank you for leaving us this beautiful comment that fills us with pride to read. If you decide to return to Peru, do not hesitate to look for us. See you soon.

How many guides did you have on the trek and what is a good tip amount? We want to make sure we have enough cash at the end to take care of our guides.

Are the hot springs on the trek hot? I am seeing past reviews that they are luke warm.
Written 2 June 2024
They are not hot, there’s a few different pools and they vary but none are hot. It is also an hour drive from the resort.

Hello! Are sleeping bags included in this tour? If not, how much do they cost?
Written 17 March 2024
Salkantay Trekking charged us US$25 for sleeping bags. They were in great condition and clean. We thought it was worth it not to add to our luggage.

Hi,
What hotel/ hostel is recommended in Cusco that the guide picks you up at? I want to make sure the hostel/ hotel is accessible for the company to pick us up at.
Thanks

the tour buses pick you up from any hostel or hotel, however close to the central square is the best place to be as the pick up & drop off is the most convenient.
