Incredible Experience
May 2021 • Friends
We didn't get to go on the Balkan ride as it was not available but the company was able to accomidate us and arrange an alternative ride for us elsewhere and they arranged it all the day before! Our guide Lobo was amazing. Spent an amazing afternoon riding through the countryside. The horses were all well mannered. We had an inexperienced rider with us who was very nervous however the skill, personability, and demeanor of our guide and the incredibl horses put her quickly at ease. I would highly recommend any ride you can do here!

Great Family activity to enjoy the Balkans outdoors!
Oct 2019
Me and my daughter (13 years old) had a great time with this activity, the place is about 1 1/2 hours from Sofia. Vlad our guide was really nice and on the way on nice private car we learned a lot about Bulgaria history. We are not horse riding experts and still it was really easy and fun, as the horses are really gentle and easy to ride, and Alex was always with us and always watching. The scenery is amazing and you get to see a monastery at top of the mountain with a real monk! that otherwise would be really difficult to get to. Perfect day trip to do something while in Sofia, Highly recommend.

Bulgarian horse riding.
Jun 2019 • Couples
Myself and my partner booked our first get away holiday to Bulgaria to trek over the Rhodopi mountains. The trek was a three days all accommodated and food inclusive.
On the first day we were greeted by a very friendly gentleman, our tour guide for the duration, Lubomir Gatev. who took us to collect and tack up the horses, before getting off on our adventure.
All the horses were well looked after and very friendly towards the riders.

While trekking on the first day, even though it was pouring with rain, this didn’t dampen our spirts. Lubo was extremely knowledgeable about his country and about the horses we were so eager to rider and learn about.
The first night we spent in a beautiful large house within the mountains. Toilet and shower facilities were available with hot water.
I was a little worried about meal times as I am a vegetarian, however, I was more then catered for with alternative foods from the other group which left us all stuffed after each sit down meal.
The second day we continued to trek with the weather looking a lot brighter then the day before. Stopping half way for lunch near a little Chaple was a great place to fill our stomachs while looking out on the stunning scenery. Lubo provided packed lunches for us, again accommodating for my diet.
reaching the second accommodation for the night, toilet and showering facilities were provided with hot running water. The owner of this property was super friendly and made us a three course meal, which was delicious after a long day of riding. There was an open fire set a lovely atmosphere for the rest of the evening.
The third trip was traveling back down to the stables in the sunshine. Full of trots, canters and a final gallop in a big open field, your heart was left racing and wanting more. Returning back to the stables, Lubo then provided us with a delicious three course meal within his own home for a final goodbye.
He then drove each member back to the accommodation of which were were staying in Sofia.

The tour was full of beautiful scenery, challenging adventures and great company.
The horses were well behaved and well cared for by all staff involved.
Lubo, our tour guide, was an absolute joy to met. He wasn’t only super knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his country, the company he works for and all the horses but he made us all feel extremely welcome and made the tour a 10/10.
I would throughly recommend this trip. Young and old can appreciate the experience and no matter what level rider you are, you can enjoy the adventure. Thank you Lubo for making our trip fantastic. Hopefully see you soon. Katie and Rafi x

Exciting, scenic and informative ride!
May 2019 • Couples
An amazing ride, completely suitable for beginners. Although a little playful, the horses were well behaved and could also be controlled verbally by the horse handler, making us feel very safe. Riding helmets were also provided.

The horses are very well looked after, they have a rota to ensure that the horses only go on tours a couple of times a week so that they get sufficient rest. They also spend the summer months in the fields/mountains, instead of being in a stable which is nice.

The monastery was small, however, a must see! There were some stunning view of the mountains from there too. Also there were a few cats and dogs which belong to the monastery, which was great for an animal lover like me.

A big shout out to our tour guide Vesislava (Vesi). She was very knowledgable, and was a pleasure to talk to. She picked us up from our hotel without any problems, followed by a drive to the mountains, during which she told us about the tour, local life, recommendations in Sofia, and also answered any questions we had. Once we arrived, the horses were already waiting, meaning we were able to quickly begin. During the ride, she told us all about the horses, surroundings and locals. A lovely touch was that she took photos of us during the trip and sent them to us once the tour had finished, to ensure we had lovely memories.

We requested to stop for our lunch break after we had returned from the monastery. We had a nice picnic in the local village, Vesi even gave us the opportunity to try a Bulgarian drink which is traditionally drunk with Banitsa pastry (if I remember correctly).

Thank you for making the tour so personal to us, very much appreciated! Definitely the highlight of our time away.

Fun, but not as advertised.
Sep 2018 • Solo
I should start by saying I thoroughly enjoyed my ride, it just unfortunately was not the ride I expected to have. I was picked up in Sofia on time by a very nice driver, and taken out to the ride location. While my driver was a horseman, he was not working for the company and did not come on the ride (which was a shame). I was the only rider booked, and was given a very nice Arabian stallion who was impeccably well-behaved, except when passing other horses (at which point he behaved like a stallion!). Not a big issue, but an inexperienced rider would have struggled to keep him going. My guide spoke adequate English but spent almost the entire ride on the phone. He asked early on if I was a good rider (I have a lot of experience) and then we trotted, cantered and galloped nearly the whole way. It was exhilarating and I really loved this, and I'm sure he would have catered to a rider preferring to go more slowly if asked. The main downfall was that I was not taken to the monastery (or if I was it was not pointed out) and there was no stop for lunch, as advertised. I was disappointed to not have the chance to explore the monastery. However, the riding itself was very good, very fun horses in nice condition, nice countryside scenery. Five stars would have been easy to give if I'd seen and explored the monastery and my guide had spent less time on his phone.

2 Days horse riding at the Teteven Balkan mountains
Oct 2018 • Solo
The experience was great, our guide was Lubomirr (which speaks English fluently), and he made this trip amazing, fun, and a great experience.
since I couldn't find too much information about the company that I booked the trip through (Penguin Travel) I hesitated a little before, but at the end I can say only good things about them.
I must say that the horse stable is not a well developed one, as well as the whole area of the riding, also the guy that guided us at the first day (It wasn't Lubomirr) did not speaks English at all, but it didn't interrupt the experience to be great and positive.
The logistic of the trip were well organized, the pickup and drop-off, and the accommodation, all worked perfect.

Best holiday because…. Best guide ever
Aug 2018 • Solo
Just got back from 1 week of horse-riding in the Rhodopi montains. I have a huge smile on my face, despite being back at work!!
We felt very welcome in all hotels, especially at the U Niko, where Nicolaï and his wife were wonderful hosts.
Our guide Lubo spoke very good English. He made this trip one of the best experience of our lives. So much enthusiasm and will to please… he did his job effortless and we were all very impressed!
This trip was such a wonderful and unexpected surprise, amazing landscapes, friendly people and we were very sad when it came to an end.. you can book with your eyes closed!
I will definitely use Penguin Travel for my next horse-riding trip. Great organisation, all went according to schedule! I just hope there is a Lubo guide at every destination they offer.
Thank you thank you thank you.
