Not far from Bucharest, the small town of Targoviste played a monumental role in the history of the country. Apart of its royal past when the city served as the capital of the great Wallachia country for a couple of centuries (between 1418-1659), it is also the site which made international headlines back in Christmas Day,1989, when the communist party leader Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife were executed.
The bullet-grey building looks the same as it did 16 years ago: the execution walls are still embedded with the marks of the projectiles and with the white outlines of where the two were laid down.
