Panama Canal and Gatun Lake Jungle Eco Cruise
From US$70.00
Overview
Cruise the Panama Canal to Gatun Lake on a 3-hour nature tour from Panama City that includes round-trip transport from central Panama City and time to explore Gatun’s wildlife-rich shoreline by boat. Visit jungle islands that were cut off from mainland Panama by construction of the canal, which protect a thriving population of monkeys, birds, crocodiles, and mammals.
What to Expect
Meet a guide and group at a central location in Panama City, then travel to the Canal-side town of Gamboa in an air-conditioned minivan. Built to house Panama Canal workers in 1911, Gamboa has preserved early 20th-century homes and landmarks, and marks the point where the Chagres River flows into the Panama Canal.
Board a covered boat on the Panama Canal, and cruise alongside commercial and private boat traffic making the trip between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Emerge into Gatun Lake, and continue to the islands created by the construction of the Panama Canal: Gatun Lake formed when engineers blocked the Chagres River with Gatun Dam, once the largest earth dam in the world. Watch for wildlife along the shoreline of the Monkey Islands, and try to spot capuchin, howler, and tamarin monkeys in the foliage. Gatun Lake is also home to a diverse range of tropical birds, while coati, agouti, capybara, and iguanas forage in the understory.
At the end of the 90-minute boat trip, make the return trip to Panama City by minivan, where this tour concludes with drop-off at a central location.

Disappointed

Gatun lake obviously depends on the wild life making an appearance....... Panama Canal was interesting to view but I would imagine the experience of travelling through on a ship far outways the views. There is an informative film shown alternatively in English and Spanish. We...More

Unforgettable

Trip starts out on the mighty Chargres River which is the reason why the Panama Canal is not a sea-level trench like the Suez. From there you enter Gatun Lake which was made by filling up the jungle with water. You will be transported to...More

We did this tour on Friday, April 6 at 7am. My husband and 2 sons complained relentlessly about getting up so early, but their griping ceased immediately once things got started. From the minute we were picked up by Jerin, who led our tour, we...More
