Great hike and an awesome guide. The hike is not too challenging and the views at the top are outstanding. The spa afterwards was wonderful. Perfect day! Highly recommend.

We had a lovely morning hiking up Volcán Pacaya. The highlights of the trip were the views (especially seeing plumes from Volcán de Fuego), the heat from the vents at our destination, and the dogs that live at the volcano. One thing to note is that the hike is not “easy”. It is rated moderate on the sign at the trailhead, and I think that’s a fair assessment. The hike is a constant ascent for about 1 hour, with a total elevation gain of 1000ft. However, practically anyone can do this tour because there are horses for rent at the base. In addition, they sent a horse with our group as an “ambulance” in case it became too much for anyone. One tip: remember to bring plenty of water!

Our group of 10 clients was hosted by 4 knowledgeable Old Town guides.

On the hike up, we learned about different plants. Once closer to the summit, the views were very impressive, even if there wasn't much active lava flow to see.

This hike is great because its close to Antigua and the city, easily accessible and not too difficult. Great for families and people of all ages and abilities.

Would recommend!

With my family, 2 adults and 4 teenagers we went with Lukas on this fantastic hike
It is not a very easy hike but a real challenge especially as you have to bring at least 4 liters water and carry this on your back. The climb us was aprox 6 hours, half way Lukas prepared a wonderful lunch
On top our tents were ready, unfortunately it rained so we have to stay on our tents and adjust to the height. At the moment we thought that we had to go to sleep without dinner Lukas managed to make a pasta meal in his tent...amazing
We went to sleep and woke up at midnight again and had a great view on the Fuego as the sky was clear...wow !!!
At 3.30 we climbed to the summit...this was even more a challenge but absolutely worth while...you feel so small being part of this overwhelming nature, the active volcano, the clouds, the cold....
Going down took aprox 2,5 hours. Thank you Lukas for being the perfect guide and sharing all your experience with us and prepare the most wonderful food!
Thank you Old Town Outfitters for the good gear ( the tents kept us dry at night) and for storing the luggage.
It was an amazing experience and for some of the family members the best experience ever

We had an amazing time with Old Town on this adventure!! They were extremely accommodating... we were running a bit behind schedule and they were completely flexible.
The guides were great!! Easy to talk to and very knowledgeable.
Delicious lunch was provided.
We took our 3 and 4 year old children... yes we did a lot of carrying them, but it was well worth it!!

Great work!! We will definitely book with Old Town again!!

We took this day trip with Old town outfitters a few days ago from Antigua.

The email communications with them was very smooth n responsive as I planned the trip two months ago.

The guide on the day of the hike was Louis; along with a local guide called “monkey”. Both were very nice and helpful. We roasted marshmallow from the heat of the lava rocks; n had simple lunch prepared by the guides as we appreciated the beautiful n peaceful surroundings on the mountain.

A highly recommended day trip organized by a highly recommended operator, Old Town Outfitters!!

Our hike up Pacaya Volcano was great from beginning to end. We were two families with 4 kids total between the ages of 6 -12. Everyone enjoyed the experience. Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. He even ran down parts of the trail when the children wanted to run. The lunch exceeded my expectations. A fabulous picnic spread at the top. Lots of options for everyone to pick from. The guide also paid attention to the weather and we picked up the pace towards the end of our hike to avoid getting caught in a downpour. Great experience and highly recommended!

This was by far the coolest thing I did while in Antigua. The guides were super friendly, on time, and taught me a lot about the area. I felt totally comfortable as a solo female traveler and can’t stop thinking about the incredible volcanos. Thank you!!

We were pleasantly surprised when our group of 5 (2 adults, 3 teenage boys) showed up to Old Town Outfitters and discovered that we were the only ones on our tour. I cannot say enough good things about our guides. They really connected well with the boys and us. We also had a local guide that shared many great details about the volcano. The burrito lunch was much appreciated. It's at least an hour drive depending on traffic back to Antigua and the food choices are limited in the parking area.
Here are some helpful tips before you go:
Plan your hike for a couple of days after you arrive so you can acclimate to the altitude.
Wear hiking shoes. You will need the grip and sturdiness of the shoes on the hike and for climbing on the lava flow at the top.
The day we went it was sunny and hot. I froze Gatorade the night before to bring along and it was a nice treat along the trail.
Don't be afraid to ask the guide to stop so you can catch your breath. There is only one way in and one way out making it very difficult to get lost.
Enjoy the views! It's a great hike and being prepared will help you enjoy it!
We felt safe and enjoyed our day with the guides from Old Town Outfitters tremendously.
