Best Cooking Class!!!

I absolutely loved this experience. It was a pleasure to have the meal and the traditions explained to me thoroughly and to meet our wonderful hosts who were so hospitable! I felt as if I was having a warm hearty meal with family. They truly make you feel at home and of course the food was amazing! I highly recommend this beautiful experience!

Great way to experience local food and culture
It was a great way to experience local food and culture. We made some popular dishes— pepian, arroz con verduras, tortillas and tostadas. The teacher was very pleasant, knowledgeable and funny. After we made dinner we ate on the terrace with a view of the city lights

Great experience learning to cook an authentic Guatemalan meal.
What a wonderful experience! I definitely would recommend taking this cooking class. We learned to cook an authentic Guatemalan meal with Ingrid and Joaquin. They were great instructors and very fun to learn from. Thank you Joaquin for salsa dancing with me!

Beautiful Experience
Sep 2021 • Friends
This cooking class and market tour was a phenomenal experience! Our tour guide Pampa was amazing at showing us around the market, letting us buy fruits and vegetables that we’ve never tried and taste tested them while cooking. He shared a lot of history about Antigua and answered all of our curious questions. The ambiance of the class itself was amazing. We made a hearty Pepian stew, homemade tortillas, tostadas, a plantain dessert, and fresh hibiscus tea. The menu was very fulfilling and delightful. Wine was also served and was a great addition to the social gathering. I was amazed with how personable the experience was and breath taking views. It was the highlight of my vacation.

Must do in Antigua
We knew we were in for a fun day the moment we met Joaquin and Fernando! They were fun, friendly and very personable. Fernando spoke perfect English while Joaquin spoke only Spanish but somewhat understood English. They picked us up, on time, from our hotel and we were on our way to the market in Antigua. The market was nothing like anything we had ever experienced in the states! Joaquin led us through a maze of different sections containing produce, meats, herbs, spices, clothing and a food court. They showed us their favorite place to eat and introduced us to the owner and chef, Jaime. He let us into his small cooking area where he had many pots full of delicious smelling concoctions all cooking at once! As we made our way around the market, Joaquin expertly picked out items we would need to prepare a traditional Guatemalan dish called Pepian. We also sampled various fresh fruits and a delectable treat made with fresh figs, vanilla and cinnamon. We left the market and headed to Jocotenango. Joaquin set up the cooking school, Cuscun, in his home which was a very short distance from the market. He had a cooking area downstairs and one upstairs on his beautifully decorated rooftop. The view was spectacular! We could see Aqua Volcano and the surrounding town of Jocotenango. We met the third person of their team, Ingrid, who got us started on making Pepian. We also made tostadas with the fresh ingredients from the market. Ingrid spoke Spanish and Fernando expertly translated everything into English. We had done a couple of other tours and activities before the cooking school, and by far, it was the best experience of our whole trip! It was just the two of us in the class so we had a very personal experience and made 3 new friends! We will do this again when we go back to Guatemala and we can’t say enough good things about Joaquin, Fernando, and Ingrid! The whole experience was muy bueno!!!!!

Best Cooking Class I’ve ever Taken!
I truly enjoyed this class! I can’t say enough about the hospitality that Joaquin, Fernando and Ingrid provided! I felt like family the entire time. From the beginning, with trip to “The Mercado”, to the amazing teaching of the meal preparation and the eating of the meal together, in the end made it a perfect day! I would absolutely book this cooking class again! If you are thinking of taking it, do not hesitate! Great conversation, great laughs, great food, great wine and and all in all, an amazing time!

AMA ing local experience in Guatemala
What a fantastic day we had! There is nothing like spending time with locals and really shopping, preparing and eating a meal together. We were picked up at our hotel and taken to the open air market where we learned about and tasted new fruits and vegetables. After buying what we needed for out cooking class we headed to Joaquin’s house and up to his beautiful terrace with covered outdoor kitchen and amazing views. We chopped, mixed, cooked and made homemade tortillas all while drinking a delicious local red wine! Once the meal was complete, we all sat down together and enjoyed an amazing meal and wonderful conversation! Such genuine people! It will certainly be one of the highlights of our Guatemala adventure! You will be missing out if you pass this opportunity by!

Cultural and fun time!! Highly recommend!
Feb 2020
This is exactly what we were looking for; something small, intimate and cultural. We were picked up on time and taken straight to the market where everything was explained in detail and we were encouraged to ask questions and participate in the experience. After an hour or two we rode a few miles to the next village where we started prepping and cooking to music and wine on the roof. From the beginning till end we felt like family.

I would highly recommend for the intrepid, fun traveler. The weather was beautiful and we loved traveling in the back of the pickup truck. The market was so interesting, we re-visited the next day.

A super enjoyable experience that we will do again when we re-visit Antigua with friends.

Just What We Wanted
Feb 2020
Three of us (60-somethings) were picked up, with our translator, and then toured the amazing Antigua market - I've been in markets all over the world, but this was the most vibrant, colorful, and interesting. Then transported to a lovely cooking classroom - on the rooftop with a view of the volcano! - where our teacher gave excellent instructions and helped us prepare a fabulous lunch. We hit it off with the other 4 women in the class - we were on similar service trips - and the whole day was perfect. Thanks so much.
