Great Tour Company and Value For Money
I did: Full Day Kuang Si Waterfalls, Hmong Village Afternoon: Mekong Sunset Cruise (Downstream), Pak Ou Caves, Whisky Village Tour.

The guide (named Thin), van driver, boat captain, and the van itself were all great! Great value for money!

My friend and I chose the full day tour that started with the waterfalls, which meant they weren’t as busy with tourists as they apparently get later in the day. Everyone on our tour agreed we were happy we chose this option. And it also meant we enjoyed the sun set while on our boat cruise back from the caves/ whiskey village.

Kuang Si Waterfalls: They were beautiful! Totally worth it. My friend and I went as part of a group, so we were picked up from our hotel in an air conditioned van. I saw people driving the long (under construction) road in tuk tuks and on motorcycles- and I wouldn’t want to do that myself. None of our group swam as the water was cold. Pro tip: we walked up to paved road to the top of the falls, beating most other people to the top, since the route was direct. So we had a few minutes of the place to ourselves- which was awesome. Then we took the longer main route on the way back down. There is a bear rescue on site as well. I was opposed to the idea of the bears being in a zoo-like environment for tourists to see before going (I don’t even like regular zoos for the same reason).... and I’m still a bit conflicted after having seen it. But on the other hand, they were saved from a much worse fate....

Hmong Village: It was nice to learn a bit about the locals. The village felt like it might be a bit of a tourist trap, but... I’m not really sure about the details (i.e. if the money goes to supporting the people of the community). The baby girls were wearing makeup, which bothered me... but then maybe I’m judging from an uniformed perspective.

Unmentioned stop to water buffalo icecream/ cheese shop: The whole van full of people enjoyed this!

Lunch: The lunch place was beautiful! Stunning location and there were elephants wandering by the river. There were also elephant rides- using wooden baskets- which I am opposed to. There were no chains on any of the elephants- which was good. And they seemed to have free roam, which was good. Elephant sanctuaries are my charity of choice - so I’m very picky about elephant treatment. Please don’t ride them.

Pak Ou Caves: We took the boat to the caves. They were nice. There are lots of stairs! There are two options: one cave has less stairs, so I took that option since I have knee problems. My friend went up to the cave that had more stairs. She loved it. I’ve seen caves like this before, but it was her first time.

Whiskey Village: Quick stop to a local whiskey village. Nice to learn a bit about how they make it, and taste it.

Sunset on the boat: The views were lovely! And coming back along the river was great... we were definitely all tired by this point. It was a long but beautiful day.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your recent day trip with us. I'm pleased to hear you had a beautiful day with Manifa Travel team (tour guide, minivan driver, boat captain) and found our tour value for money. I understand that there are objections in Western countries about elephant-riding tourism, led by animal rights activists. But the negative campaigns by animal rights activists are not true. A recent academic study looking at the stress indicator level (fecal glucocorticoid metabolite) in captive elephants conducted by researchers from the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Unit, Chiang Mai University, and National Elephant Institute Thailand showed that captive elephants interacting with mahouts and performing daily exercise through riding had lower stress levels than elephants in passive viewing camps. There are some excellent articles introducing the latest elephant tourism problem on "skift.com". Our company homepage also has a good elephant FAQ written by a professional team supported by EU and Laos officials. Please read them for furthher information. Thank you for choosing Manfa Travel, I hope you had a wonderful onward journey from Luang Prabang.

Disappointing
Nov 2019
I really want to give 9/10’s of this tour 5 stars. We loved the kayaking we relatively enjoyed the caves and were blown away by the waterfalls. However the reason I can’t give this company 5 stars is because Viator who we booked this trip with didn’t mention it included an elephant ride. Being confronted by an elephant sanctuary where the guide admitted they used whips was too much for us. Additionally on the kayaking not enough attention was paid to health and safety with no safety briefing provided for an activity on a fast flowing river. The single guide for a group of 6 was a bit reckless in not guiding us through danger areas in the river.

Dear completerandomer, I investigated your tour. There were 6 participants in kayak tour, 2 from your group booked through Viator and 4 from another group booked through our partner hotel. The two groups have the same itinerary. Kayaking ends and lunch places are elephant camps, but elephant riding is not included. The reason why elephant ride was conducted was that one of the four groups strongly requested it after seeing elephants. Operation team could not refuse his request and offered a short time elephant bath for free. We are sorry that this is miss judgement by operation team. I apologize for hurting your feelings. As for kayak safety, there are no rapid current in the Nam Ou and the Mekong rivers. It is very safe even for beginners. We think that one tour guide can lead 6 tourists. We are responsible for offering a safe kayak. We have created an emergency manual for kayak, and the tour guide and other operating teams are trained to collaborate to ensure the safety of participants in case of an accident. Elephant keeper (or Mahout) are allowed to use whips or bull-hook. They not made to be a weapon against the elephant as Animal Rights Extremist groups portray it as. It is a GUIDE and serves the same purpose as a Dog's leash or a Horse's reins. It helps communicate with the animal and positively reinforce taught behaviors. One of the most common propaganda claims by Animal Rights Extremists is that The Guide is used to cause harm, that Elephants are taught to fear it and make the Elephant "submit" to its trainer. It is a highly misleading claim and Lie. If mahout use instruments for fear, elephants will constantly refuse and will attack, or kill easily their mahouts. Please read elephant FAQ in our homepage if you are interested in sustainable tourism and elephant experts' opinions rather than the sensational and mass-conversational discourse of animal rights groups. These were created by a team of experts organized by German and EU officials. Best regards, Yuki

Great day of activities and sights
Sep 2019
We were a bit hesitant about how hard the kayaking and cave trekking portion of this tour would be, but any doubt was eased by our wonderful guide Sai, who really made the entire day so special. He provided for any need or question we had, whether it was for guidance, rowing tips, history lessons, nature lectures and the occasional joke! We can't say enough about him!
