I was caught up in the Dubai flooding chaos of 17.04.2024. I was travelling alone & spent 2 nights in a hotel due to my original onward flight being cancelled. I received a voucher for the Chauffeur journey from Dubai International Airport to the hotel but Emirates didn’t give me a return Chauffeur transfer so, the I asked the hotel concierge to arrange this for me. At the time I believed the hotel concierge (Vikas) was really helpful, however, I’m not so sure now. Having checked the hotel accounts he found there was no return prepared journey to the airport. He attempted to contact Emirates without success. Eventually we agreed that my only alternative was for me to pay for the return journey. He told me that the general taxis were unreliable so I agreed for him, on my behalf, to arrange a private hire at an agreed price of UAE$170, this was confirmed in WhatsApp messages. I had ready checked out prices of Private Hire and saw that from my location to the airport prices quoted were approx UAE$110 - 130. However, by that stage I was keen to get to the airport to complete my onward journey with the least amount of stress. Driving to the airport I saw that many legitimate general taxis were driving on the main road to Downtown Dubai/Dubai International Airport road. There were also lots of signs advising illegitimate transfers to the airport attracted large fines. The driver pulled up at the airport & went to get out of the vehicle. I stopped him saying I need to pay. He said UAE$170 cash, I stated I had no cash and confirmed I was paying by credit card to ensure I could claim for the journey on my return home. He said he didn’t have a machine and wanted cash. I held my card up saying this is how I was paying. He then said his machine didn’t work and asked if I had other currency. Again, I said I was paying by card because I needed to claim and Vitas (the Concierge) knew this, I also said that I had no cash at all. I reiterated I needed to pay on card and get a receipt to make a claim (this conversation went back and forth a few more times but by this stage I’d had enough and maintained my stance). Eventually, he lifted the lid of the centre console and got his card payment machine out. Unbelievably he then had the nerve to say because it wasn’t cash the cost would be UAE$200. By this stage I was furious, I said no, that I’d pay the agreed price on card as per the messages from Vitas. Astonishingly, he then had the nerve to give it another go by saying the charges had gone up this morning! I said absolutely not, that the price quoted for today was UAE$170 and that was the amount I was going to pay on card. At that he activated the card payment machine. His machine worked, I paid the agreed price and got receipt.
