Great visit and certainly an experience
Feb 2020
We took this tour with tour cruise line and had a great trip our to the island on our catamaran. The day was windy but we saw loads of penguins on our walk around the island, some young ones, some changing their feathers and many adults. Our only issue was the return trip as the weather had changed for the worse and the sea had large waves. The boat had to turn back at one point for an hour to see if the wind abated. Unfortunately it didn't so we had a very rough ride back with a number of passengers being ill. However, the crew were brilliant and reacted very quickly to those who succumbed and must be praised.

Cute penguins!
Dec 2019
My friend and I enjoyed seeing the penguins, but the timing was very off.

Since we weren't coming from a cruise or staying at a hotel, we were told to arrive at the Terminal by 9:20 am. We waited in the waiting room for quite a bit, where they had free wifi and souvenirs if you're interested. We didn't get on the catamaran until about 10 am. The tour description said that the boat ride to Magdalena would take about 90 minutes, but it was closer to 2 hours. One of the two bathrooms on the boat was not working, which was an inconvenience when we were told about 20 minutes before landing that there was no bathroom on the island, and about half the 52 passengers lined up to use the loo. The catamaran was really just for taking us from the mainland to the island, so if you want snacks or coffee, you're out of luck.

When we arrived at the island, we were docked next to another ship, and the captain determined that we couldn't get on the dock safely. They had a group of 10 get on a Zodiac lifeboat from the back of the boat to go around the other ship. There seemed to be communications issues because those 10 people sat in the boat for a while, and by the time they got around the other boat to the dock, the other boat left and our captain decided it was okay to disembark from the front of the boat.

On the plus side, Catalina was a great guide. She was very knowledgeable and spoke English well. There were two other guides, but they didn't really do much. We were told to stay 2 meters from the penguins. The island was full of penguins and seagulls. There is a circular walkway marked by a rope from the dock, up to the lighthouse, around the other side of the beach. We saw so many penguins, including down-covered babies, that it was a real treat to see them. We were on the island about an hour, which was plenty of time to walk all the way around and take pictures.

I would give 5 stars for delivering on the penguins, but 3 for the disorganization of the company. We thought we would be done by 1 or 2 pm, and we didn't return to the mainland until 4:30 pm.

Great Christmas Present
Dec 2019
We were picked up at our lodging and delivered to the departure area where we had a short wait to board the ferry. Although the water was a little rough the ride was smooth and comfortable. Getting to the seating area requires some stairs so if that is a problem, this is not the trip for you. The island is wonderful with lots of penguins and their babies and seagulls with their babies too! Once on the island you have 1 hour and MUST follow the path UP to the lighthouse before returning to the ferry. No place to sit and catch your breath and not a lot of time for pictures but overall it was a good experience. Upon return we were taken back to our lodgings. We were with our son, his wife, and their 2 daughters ages 12 and 10. If you really want to see lots of penguins then take this trip!

Magdalena Island Penguins

A million penguins! Fantastic! But what could go wrong did with this company. Wanted us there at 9 am, to wait for 10:30 shuttle??? Supposed to be 1 hr 40 min boat to island, nope. About 2.5 hrs. 1 hr on island with penguins. Total tour supposed to be 5 hrs. Was 7+ hrs without food. Ouch. Seemed like problems with boat driver. Lined up to pier very poorly. Stuck on boat. People then had to climb out a front window onto pier.

Disaster
Dec 2019
This has our worst experience using Viator to book independent shore excursions. We booked and paid for PM excursion to Magellan Island. 10 days later we were told that afteroon departure was sold out and offered a morning departure. On December 20th said we wanted to see the penguins and would plan on going on tour knowing we could cancel up to 48 hours in advance in case we heard ship would arrive too late. Ten days later we get an email saying afternoon trip is sold out and they are cancelling our reservation. Our credit card is not showing the credit at this time. Total waste of time trying to book this excursion throught Viator.

So far bad horrible experience
Dec 2019
I don't fully blame the company. Our cruise ship was on time, but the port was closed down for several hours due to rough seas. You have to tender in no matter what cruise ship you are on. We knew we would be late and tried to call multiple times and no one would answer. We ended up being about an hour late and there was someone who was suppose to meet us at the pier. We travel a great deal on cruise ships and have had other weather related problems, but the company always know this and still has someone to meet you. On this one excursion no one was there. Any American traveling should be aware English is not well spoken in South America. In the agreement we are due a full refund if you can't make the trip due to weather. At this point we have e- mailed the company and called them-, but no one answers the phone and we have not heard back about the refund from the company from our email. We are right now out six hundred plus was a very disappointing day. We booked through trip advisor so hopefully will be taken care of.

Dear Carri, you couldn´t do the tour because port was closed and you can´t take a tender from the ship to the port on time. Then you sent as a message explaining what had happened and I accept inmediatelly the full refund, so I can´t understand why you qualify with 1 star a tour that you never did !! Fernando

How to actually book the tour--and always confirm departure time!
Mar 2019 • Couples
The tour to see penguins was definitely worthwhile. It mainly consisted of around 30 mins of bus transportation from downtown Punta Arenas to the dock, and then a 1.5 boat ride to the island. The crew provided some information on the available wild like, we saw two types of dolphins during the boat ride.
The difficult part of this excursion is the booking and confirmation. I initially contacted Solo Expedicion via their website, but never heard back. I then booked through 'Top Private Tours' on Tripadvisor and received confirmation. (I believe this was a third party that helped Solo Expedicion book clients, the tour itself was still through Solo.) However, the company contacted me 3 days before the trip via Tripadvisor to tell me that departure time has changed from early morning to noon due to low tide. Since our flight was in the early afternoon, this meant that we would miss the trip. Luckily our tour guide called the office and moved the reservation a day earlier for us. I had also messaged the company via email to change the date, but never heard back.
I would advise you to check the actual departure time before you book. The time change was a huge surprise last minute.
Lastly, the boat ride is quite bumpy for those prone to sea-sickness. My husband did not have a good time on the boat.

Walk amongst the birds
Feb 2018
The huge number of birds on the island is extremely impressive. One has to walk along designated paths but the birds share those paths with the human visitors and are totally unafraid. Seeing the penguins in their natural habitat is a great experience for young and old alike.
