Tahir provided my favorite Indian tourist experience thus far! The evening before I met Tahir, I was in a bit of a funk - feeling a bit aimless, exhausted, and overwhelmed by the complicated dynamics of India despite being amid Udaipur's beauty. A morning bike ride all over the region with Art of Bicycles proved to be just what I needed to get me back on track. Tahir was one of my guides as we cruised through India's White City, exiting the hustle of town for the beautiful lakeshores and out into the countryside farms and rural villages on the outskirts, nestled in the mountain valleys. I spent a large portion of the ride alongside Tahir as we shared our personal backgrounds and had a really organic cultural exchange - unpacking politics, love and relationships, religion, social behavior, and more in our respective homes. Later that afternoon, I took him up on an offer to venture out to Bahibali Hill for some hiking a panoramic views for a very reasonable rate. I hopped on the back of his motorcycle as he led me on a scenic tour of the city, passing by the locals’ hangout at Fateh Sagar Lake and a great local bakery (Celebration), where we stopped to grab some refreshments for our hike – shoutout that grilled paneer sandwich. Tahir skillfully traversed the countryside mountain roads until we reached a small dirt parking lot, guarded by a local matriarch. The hike itself was much shorter than I’d imagined – only about 15 minutes to the peak—but the views surpassed my imagination. Along the way Tahir and I talked more about our personal lives (families, hopes/ dreams) and cultural topics like sports, food, and what young people do for fun. Atop the mountain, there were several couples doing pre-wedding photo shoots, a handful of local folks, and a few tourists. It was an active site, but not over-crowded by any means. We enjoyed some masala chai from the mountain-top concession stand and our snacks from the bakery. We snapped a few flicks and befriended a stray dog who was more interested in our food than our personalities. We walked down as the sun was setting and were greeted by a trio of langur monkeys before hopping back on the motorcycle and taking a new, equally beautiful route back into town at dusk. The experience felt like the most genuine friendship moment and deep cultural connection so far and I'm super grateful! Great guy. Very helpful. Wonderful bike tour outside of city. So nice to see farms, local villages, lakes and palaces. Good bikes and easy cycling. Stopped at a really local cafe for chai. Really great experience.
