    Perfect Guide, Perfect Trip
First, a few words about Paul: I’ve never experienced a more professional guide than Paul. Booking was seamless, and he was very clear in communicating prices, the itinerary, and deposits (looking at you, 1-star Jens). To say he knows his island inside-out is an understatement—he can discuss any topic about Flores as lightly or as deeply as you wish, and he appeared to be well-known and well-liked everywhere we went. He has a very comfy car and he’s an outstanding driver—don’t underestimate the importance of this on the twisty narrow roads of Flores! Most importantly, Paul is just a great person to be around. He has a wonderful sense of humor. He is also a man of admirable character. He is active in his community, a great father and husband (we got to meet his family), and just someone you can trust (again, important on those Flores roads). Paul took us on the 7-day itinerary from Labuan Bajo to Ende, and it was one of the best weeks I’ve ever experienced traveling. The hike to and overnight at Wae Rebo was awesome, and I really appreciated Paul’s patience and kindness during the hike as I was scheduled for a knee replacement two weeks later. I don’t want to give away too many details of the trip, because you can read those in other reviews or just jump into it like we did. What I will tell you is that Paul is flexible and accommodating, and his knowledge and planning will guarantee you have a great time.

Paul let us down by making double booking without telling us.
In September 2024 we made agreement with Paul to be our guide & driver for an overland tour in Flores on 19-27 November. We agreed on the price and then exchanged extensive information about the itinerary through many e-mails and text messages. However, during the late part of October the replies from Paul started to fade out. I’m familiar with Indonesian culture, where no news are usually bad news, why I chased Paul for reply. Finally Paul replied that he had actually booked another group of tourist for the exact some dates as he had confirmed to be our guide, why he suddenly cancelled. At that time we had relied on Paul as our guide & driver and we were less than one month from the start of our holiday. It thus put us in an uncomfortable and stressful situation to suddenly being without a guide & driver. When I asked Paul how it could happen, he was quite clear that it wasn’t a mistake but rather a calculated move from his side. He explained that he would usually turn down a client if someone else would book with advance payment; which is something Paul had not even mentioned to us during the extensive communication we had with him during more than a month. We wonder whether Paul would have remained quiet if I hadn’t chased him for reply. We could likely have arrived in Flores and waiting for Paul to pick us up from the Airport, while he was actually already traveling with another group of tourists. Fortunately we managed to find a good and honest guide and we had a wonderful trip through the beautiful island of Flores. However, we would rather have been without the dishonest experience with Paul and have had a bit more time to plan the itinerary with our final guide.

    Trip of a lifetime
Highly recommend Paulus 'Paul' Akaput's overland Flores tours. From first contact he was helpful and responsive, tailoring an itinerary for our schedule, interests and needs (I was travelling with my almost 80 year old father). Our 7 day-6 night tour started in Labuan Bajo with pick up from their airport, with nights at Ruteng, Aimere, Bajawa and Moni. Many highlights on the way, but loved the ever changing landscapes, stunning volcanos and crater lakes and visits to the villages. Paul is an extremely skilled and safe driver on Flores' windy roads and had excellent restaurant recommendations. He is very knowledgeable about all aspects of Flores, and his thoughtful insights on the culture and economy was a real highlight for us. Paul also really assisted us when our tour was over and our flight was cancelled from Ende due to volcanic ash, enabling us to still make it to Labuan Bajo to enjoy the last 2 days of our trip. It was a trip of a lifetime for both of us and we feel privileged to have had this experience of wonderful Flores.

10/10 Best Driver/Guide in Flores Island
We did a 7-day road trip with Paul in early May 2024 and it's one of the most enjoyable overland trips we've ever experienced. Paul is a well mannered and caring driver/guide. His car is always clean and presentable. He's very knowledgeable and resourceful, reliable and punctual, nothing is too much trouble for him. We had the opportunity to meet with his lovely young family, we wish them well and hope we can meet again in the future. Thank you Paul!

Adventurous and not yet run over by tourists
This tour was a great experience of our life. The sites we visited were the most interesting places available on the island and with a lot of information from our guide Paul. It was a safe ride with him but also adventurous when you are looking for more genuine areas in this world. We learnt a lot about Indonesia except the 4- and 5-Stars you find all around the world of the same kind.

    Fantastic Flores
Paul was a very experienced guide who took us on a varied journey of Flores for a week. We criss crossed Flores so he could show us the most interesting sites from mountains, seas and traditional villages. We tried a variety of different foods and met some wonderful people. Paul is a local and has been doing this job for many years. His knowledge was great. He knew many people along the way and we enjoyed his company. If you are thinking about seeing the real Flores we highly recommend booking with Paul.

    Amazing end-to-end tour of Flores
We did a private tour with Paul, roughly (but not exactly) the same as the itinerary in the tour I listed. Paul was very responsive in listening to our preferences and structuring our itinerary around them, and the resulting trip was incredible - Flores is among the most beautiful places that we had visited (and we've traveled a *lot*). Paul is very knowledgable, eloquent and speaks excellent English, so he was able to provide informative and interesting explanations about all the places we were visiting, as well as about Flores and Indonesia more broadly. He was also kind and helpful in many other ways; for example, he helped us deal with a hotel issue that wasn't his fault at all, and to organize a wonderful private boat tour in Komodo, even though that was after our tour with him was over. I recommend him very highly for anyone looking for a truly private experience in Flores.

    10/10⭐
The tour with Paul was one of the best tours we ever did. As our flight changed several times we even had to change the tour direction and also the tour length. Paul was very understandable and helpful. By organizing the hotels he also gave us tips where to stay etc. On the tour itself Paul showed us his great knowledge about producing porcesses, the flora, the local people and also from the history of the ancestors in the several villages. He has a perfect English and was always driving safely. We felt comfortable the whole journey. We highly recommend Paul as a really professional, helpful and responsible guide!

impressive, authentic island with an intact underwater world
It was an impressive island tour.Very well organized by Paul. He speaks excellent English, knows a lot about the country and its people, and is very attentive and never intrusive. That makes him a great guide. We have already traveled to Java, Lombok and Sulawesi; Flores is unique in terms of different etnnic groups. Very authentic, almost exotic. Our expectations were far exceeded. We only had 7 days. I would definitely plan 2 nights for Riung and also 2 for Bajawa.Unfortunately, we only planned one night at Manulalu Jungle Lodge and would have liked to stay longer. We stayed in two traditional villages Belaraghi and Waerebo...a great experience. Paul can organize everything, helps with all questions, answers very quickly via Whatsapp. We definitely recommend him!! Thank you Paul for the wonderful time on Flores and for organizing the Komodo Tour!!

    WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS HOW AMAZING....
After 24 years of traveling to over 24 different countries, my week on Flores Island with Paul was by far one of my top 5 life experiences! He is so incredibly knowledgeable about the ENTIRE island; from the customs and languages of the local villages to the politics and history of the towns and cities. He had friends in every town bringing me the warmest welcomes possible in all the places we visited. He knew where to get the best food and helped me travel sustainably, spreading my spending to support as many different families as possible. I had never hired a driver like this before and was initially inclined to just get a driver stop by stop, and I'm so glad I didn't do that!! I met other tourists along the way that were using different drivers, and while yes, they were spreading their money out, they didn't get a fraction of the experience I had because the drivers you'll get at your hotels/homestays ARE NOT GUIDES and they have limited English and very little knowledge of the areas they provide transport to. If you are at all considering visiting Flores Island, I HIGHLY recommend that you do to get a true experience of an Indonesian Island that is still pure to it's roots and for sure the best way to visit the island is to hire Paul! Several of the travelers I met that were hiring different drivers or going solo on motorbikes regretted their choices because they were basically on a photo tour and were learning very little about the people and culture of the island. Once you get there, you'll likely wish you'd have brought something to support the locals (I wish I had). Paul will not ask you, but if you ask him, he'll direct you as to what might be best within your budget. I cannot wait to return to this MAGICAL PLACE, and you will feel the same when you spend your time on Flores Island with Paul 🥰

Flores Overland with Paul: a great experience
We had the chance to see Flores accompanied by Paul, a professional local guide. Starting from Maumere, ending in Labuan Bagio, we toured for 6 days visiting local villages, markets, beautiful beaches and vulcanoes. The island is incredibly beautiful and combines stunning landscapes and welcoming people. Paul was trustworthy, professional, punctual and flexible. Communication pre and during our trip was excellent, as well as the clarity regarding fares (i.e. no extra cost occurred during the trip) and professional use of English language. The program can be tailored according to preference (for example we booked accommodation on our own and skipped Riung), and, in contrast with other guides we met while touring, he was open to changes (if feasible) The island is generally safe and it is possible to travel on your own hiring a motorbike (tarmac was better than expected with the exception of the road leading to the start of Wae Rebo trekking). However, we felt that Paul gave a significant contribution to make our trip to Flores unforgettable. He was knowledgeable about history, traditions and culture; Most importantly, we really appreciated his respectful attitude towards both local people and visitors. He gave us the impression of caring about the local communities and the need of a fair distribution of resources. Moreover, he did not limit his explanations to the standard "tourist guide-like" definitions, but showed us different view points adding to the complexity of local realities (for instance, showing us how an outcast of a typical village lived, ignored by tourist coming for an idyllic memory). Flores Overland tour (i.e. not limiting a visit to Labuan Bajo) is something we would suggest to those who intend to come to Indonesia. At the end of August we were lucky enough to see places without the large crowds that you would find in other parts of the country, hence we could really enjoy both landscapes and local people with only very few people around. In conclusion, Flores deserves a visit if you come to Indonesia; if you are lucky enough to meet a person like Paul your experience will benefit greatly!

    5 days Maumere to LB
Paul arranged a great trip from Maumere to LB. We were short of time so rushed in 5 days instead of 7. Added Hot Springs and 'Hobbit cave' which were both well worth the extra effort.

    Paulus Tour - Highly Recomend
Our tour with Paulus was amazing. And we highly recommend him. His English is excellent. He will guide you to the best areas on Flores, and allow you to add stops to your individual needs. Even though the roads are extremely windy and often rocks and dirt, the car is comfortable. Paul booked our accommodations in the best affordable hotels and Guest houses. He will accompany you on hikes and not just drop you off. We felt so well taken care of every day. Our tour was from Laban Bajo to Mauremere in 7 days. A 5 star trip with Paul.

Do youself a favor and book this tour with Paul!
In January we had the pleasure to travel with Paul over the beautiful island Flores. We had an amazing time! We started in Labuan Bajo and the trip ended in Maumere after 7 days. Paul is truly the best guide I ever had on a trip. He told us so much about the nature and culture of Indonesia. We asked him over a thousand questions and he was always happy and told us everything he knows about Flores. He showed us everything which is in the itinerary and so much more. The trip is fully customizable. Paul will always find a way to fulfill your wishes. Besides being a very good guide, Paul is also a great/ safe driver and speaks English fantastically, we had a lot of fun during the trip. I can highly recommend you to take this adventure with Paul as your guide, I would love to go back one day.

We have been on a wonderful trip in Indonesia. The finest part of the tour was a round trip on Flores.  We had 9 day round trip on a wild and beautiful island that is still unexplored by tourists. On this tour we were driven and guided by Paul. A wonderful person, positive and knowledgeable and who seemed to know “everyone” on the island. Paul has a knowledge of everything: the flora, local people with their traditions, politics, stories of ancestors and ethnic villages. We were recommended the best places to stay and eat. Paul had the focus that tourists should spread their travel expenses to support as many families and places as possible. Paul has perfect English and always drives safely. Together with Paul we visited ancient villages, hot springs, volcanoes, amazing beaches, and snorkeled on the finest reefs I've ever seen. Local fishermen grilled fresh caught fish, and we were served fruit from the trees. If you are considering visiting Flores, we recommend contacting Paul to get the best experience of this amazing island.

We had a truly wonderful trip with Paul! We did a 6 day tour from Labuan Bajo to Ende and stopped in Ruteng, Bajawa, Riung and Moni.

Before our trip, communication with Paul was prompt, kind and informative. The quote he gave us was very precise and in our opinion, very fair. We had a few hiccups (mistakes with dates on our side, and a sickness just before the start of the trip), and Paul far exceeded our expectations when organising around this: He seemlessly adapted the trip and made sure we could have a great time in Flores.

Paul was an excellent guide and driver at all times. His English is very good, so communication was very easy. He knows a lot about Flores and provided very insightful informtion about the culture and nature of this beautiful island. He tailored the trip according to our needs and arranged special trips and guides whenever necessary; e.g. for mount Inerie, he recommended an excellent mountain guide (thanks to Santos!) to take us hiking. Additionally, Paul took us to several cafe‘s serving locally grown and roasted coffee, which we enjoyed immensely.

We felt very safe and comortable with Paul. Whenever there was any issue or any concern, Paul was there to help and take care of us. He was always perfectly on time, kept the car spotless, provided us with plenty of snacks and water and he had also a great sense when to respect your privacy.

Overall, we couldn‘t have asked for a better experience on our Flores trip and would like to say THANK YOU for an incredible tour!

Wow! What a great week we had exploring Flores Island. Paul was the perfect person to lead the way. He knew, not only the roads, but the people, in every town we visited. It was such a treat for us to have a guide who was able to communicate in English without ever a glitch and who was able to translate for us so we could communicate with the locals. Thanks to Paul, everyday we were immersed in the local culture.

Our travels took us on roadways that I would think were closer to a towpath but he had the skill, the patience and the perseverance required to navigate the roads of Flores. There is a reason you cannot rent a car on the island without a driver. We now understand.

Paul shared his knowledge of the culture, the history and the plants with us, even pulling over to point out specific plants and telling us interesting facts about them. He even shared his family and his farm with us as we stopped by his home along our journey.

Paul was respectful and courteous and very interested in not only sharing with us, but learning from what we had to share. Making conversation with Paul always felt organic.

I highly recommend booking your trip with this amazing guide. I guarantee he will send you off with many wonderful memories from Flores Island.

I could not recommend this trip highly enough!! Please do yourself a favour and book with Paul. He has a wealth of knowledge about Flores and is happy to share this with you. He was also very attentive to any needs and generally making sure that you're okay along the way, which was no small detail as a solo female traveller. At no point on this trip did I feel unsafe and the trip was loads of fun. Paul is very clearly well connected to people in Flores and does what he can to help the local communities as well as other guides with their clients. You will see the beautiful landscapes of Flores as you drive along from destination to destination. As we talked along the way, Paul would pick up on things that I was interested in like hiking which he did not hesitate to ask then if I wanted to hike Mount Inerie one morning as an add on. This was a stunning addition to the trip (although not for the feint of heart. If doing mount Inerie please be prepared with good hiking shoes! Standard runners will give you a hell of a struggle on the way down) and an experience I'll never forget. He was also happy to make some changes to the itinerary when booking such as hiking to Wae Rebo Village. The trip was well balanced with time for chit-chat and time for comfortable silences to sit back and enjoy the view. Overall I have learnt so much, got some epic photos, and all round had a great time. Thank you Paul!

We, a couple from Germany (35 and 40 years old), had the opportunity to go with Paul on a 7 days trip around Flores in November 2022. - To sum it up: it was an amazing tour and experience with Paul as an excellent guide and driver!

To give you more details:

- Tour: After our Komodo tour, we started with Paul from Labuan Bajo on our 7 days tour. The following stops were e.g. included: Wae Rebo village, spider rice field, Tengku Lese waterfall, Puncak Golodepet (rice fields views), Liang Bala beach, Aimere (alcohol destillery), Mount Inerie, Bena village, Riung (17 Islands Marine Park), Blue Stone beach, Kelimutu lake, Wuring floating village, ...

- Guide: Paul is really the perfect guide for a Flores overland tour. The communication before our trip was very easy via Whatsapp. Paul was always extremely responsive, planned the trip carefully and was always open to small adjustments or extra stops. His English is excellent and a clear advantage is that he is originally from Flores and speaks the different dialects. He takes enough time to explain you everything: from the local culture, traditions and history over the various plants, trees or animals to the local food.

We highly recommend to hire Paul as your guide and driver. His prices might be a bit higher than others, but be sure that it will be worth it. We have seen other guides during our trip, but nobody with such a good level of English and an extremely high motivation to make the tour really special for the clients.

We contacted Paulus to organise a trip across Flores, from Maumere to Labuan Bajo. What impressed us immediately were the fast answers to our mails and the flexibility to adapt to our requests. Although Paulus was busy during the period when we planned to travel, he managed to find a driver/guide, Vincenzus, who proved to be simply exceptional. We had plenty of occasions to appreciate Vincenzus’s and Paulus ability to cope with unexpected situations and their competence in every respect, from driving skills to the explanations of cultural aspects. A huge thank you to both!

Wonderful tour! We thoroughly recommend it. Flores is a beautiful cosmos of different cultures, amazing nature, delicious food and kind people. Paulus is a very professional and attentive host. He shared with us his large knowledge of the island, his culture and traditions, and we enjoyed his company a lot. We appreciated the flexibility in the tour, both in the planning phase and during the tour. Paulus made a point of this being 'our tour', and we have now wonderful memories of Flores and of the people we met. Our highlights were spending the night in Wae Rebo traditional village, getting a glimpse of the local way of living, and climbing Mount Inerie to reach the top at dawn. The latter was specially arranged for us by Paulus as we like mountaineering. We highly recommend Paulus and this tour!

What can we say Paul your kindness and knowledge and gentle nature made us feel safe and looked after for our trip across Flores. I'm not good at words so I'm going to post some photos and you can see for yourself our smiles. We left feeling like we had really seen 'all' that Flores can offer. Our particular highlight was the Warerebo Trek and I have wanted to see the Kelimutu lakes since I was small and found myself looking at travel photos of amazing places to visit. We can thoroughly recommend Paul and are delighted to recommend him to others x

Paul is a wonderful guide, we highly recommend him. He is friendly, interesting, knowledgeable, intelligent, kind and accomodating. We discussed and learnt so much about Flores and Indonesian life. The trip was varied, fascinating, exciting and fun. We loved how he stopped if we saw something we liked and also stopped to show us interesting plants along the way. His English is superb and he is a safe and careful driver, which is important on the sometimes bumpy and twisty roads! We loved every part of our trip but especially hiking up to Wae Rebo (2 hours but not too challenging) and our 17 Islands boat trip. We feel very lucky to have had Paul guide us across this magical island that (apart from Komodo) has yet to feel the impact of mass tourism.

I had met Paulus last year when he accompanied me to Komodo coming from Bali, also adding a short excursion to Flores while waiting for my return flight to Bali in the afternoon.
This year I decided to return to Indonesia and complete my knowledge of the incredible island of Flores and naturally I relied on Paulus who organized a spectacular tour for me, perfect in timing and methods. When traveling alone, safety is also important and with Paulus it is maximum in all aspects!
If you decide to come to Flores contact him, in addition to a guide you will find a friend
