About
The Machame route, also referred to as the Whiskey route, was one of the most popular routes and crowded on Kilimanjaro. But now many people have been choosing Lemosho as altenative to avoid crowd which makes the route less populated compare to Lemosho. This is one of our favorite route due to its scenery and success rates. Machame route is one of the highest summit success rates given the topography and nature of the route which allows climbers to “trek high & sleep low” hence making it a more favorable route for acclimatization. This route offers some of the most spectacular scenery while on the mountain. The Machame route starts in the south west side of the mountain and proceeds steeply north, traversing the Shira plateau and eventually joining the Shira and Lemosho routes just after the Shira cave camp. The Machame route can be climbed 7Days to allow climbers been well rested and acclimatized before making the final ascent to the summit.

Incredible 7-day Machame Climb and 3-day Safari
Feb 2020
Had an incredible experience with Popote for our 7-day Machame Hike and 3-Day Safari. They took care of all travel logistics for the entire trip and we didn't really have to worry about anything. They were waiting for us at the airport, carried our bags, transported us to the hotel, clearly told us our start time for the hike, transferred us back to the hotel after the hike, picked us up for the safari and took us back to the airport. Nothing was missed!

The hike was awesome! We felt like kings the entire time. The guides and porters carried our bags, set up camp, made our food, filtered and provided water for us to drink; literally all we had to worry about was walking up the mountain. Our guides, Dixon and Dulla (aka Dolla' Dolla'), were great! They had fun with us and changed the pace in the last few days to accommodate our fitness level (three 20-something year olds). Also, Crazy Willy, our host at camp was a funny guy and always joking around with us. They were helpful the entire time!

The food on the hike, made by Joseph (our stomach engineer), was top-notch and there was always a TON of it. I probably gained weight while hiking a mountain. Two of us were gluten-free and accommodated the entire time for us. For breakfast every morning we had porridge (oat, millet, etc.), eggs, sausage, some gluten-free biscuits or flatbread. For lunch we fries, chicken/fish, fruit. For dinner, we always started with a hot soup, and then finished with rice and tasty stew and fruit. For every meal there was hot water for tea/coffee/hot chocolate. Overall, very impressed with the food and there was a lot of it! They made sure that we ate and drank a lot so that we were ready for each day.

Summitting Kilimanjaro was stunning! The guides got us there right for sunrise and the view was like nothing I'd ever seen. We did the 7-day Machame route and the scenery was beautiful and varied each day and it did a great job of acclimating us for the final day (none of us took diamox).

They also had a small award ceremony back at the Popote headquarters for us after the hike where they sang for us, gave us our summit certificates, and celebrated!

The hotel we stayed at, Parkview Inn, was really nice too! For the three of us on the trip, they provided 2 rooms. We stayed there the night before the hike and the night before the safari.

The safari was awesome as well. Would highly recommend to anyone who is already there to climb Kilimanjaro! Our guide, Tuma, spoke great English and answered all of our questions really well. I was also impressed with his driving skills on the safari when many of the roads had horrible potholes but he made the ride smooth the entire time. We did a 3-day safari and visited Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara (FYI, doing a 4 day safari brings you to Serengeti as well). The number and variety of animals was stunning. The only animal we didn't see was a leopard/cheetah which is really rare anyways and we would have had a much better chance at Serengeti too. We saw a pack of lions hunt a few warthogs, a hyena eating an antelope, a jackal eating a bird, and literally thousands of animals.

We chose the 'basic' option and stayed in tents at a luxury campsite each night. The view from the campsite overlooked Lake Manyara and was gorgeous. There were also showers at this facility which were great. Once again, our stomach engineer Joseph, made great meals and we never got sick of the food over the 10 total days we were there.

Overall, I would definitely recommend Popote and the high class of service that they provided the entire time! They are constantly looking to improve their experience and asked us several times after the hike if there was anything they could improve upon. Honestly, I didn't have a response for them. It was awesome!

P.S. On the day after our hike and before our safari, we started walking to downtown Moshi for lunch and a couple people on the street noticed one of us wearing a Popote shirt and were genuinely excited to see us and asked about the climb etc. One guy in particular, Jamaal, was another guide for Popote and ended up walking with us to lunch, showed me how to eat traditional Tanzanian food (aka eat Ugali with one hand and use it as a spoon for the meal), showed us around a local market, and walked us around town. He never asked us for money, but genuinely wanted to engage with us. It really showed that the people Popote hires are caring people.

6 day Machame route with the best
Dec 2019 • Friends
Recommended by friends. Extremely professional! Gear check on arrival, health status every day (oxygen levels, pulse, side effects of altitude all registered). It was a fantastic experience! Unforgetable! To climb Kilimanjaro with Popote Africa’s crew was outstanding! Everyone was so kind and caring with us! We never once felt neglected, unsafe or even just clients! Everyone was important and extraordinary throughout the whole 6 days and we will never forget them! They really outdid themselves and made dreams come true! All was appreciated. Their company, endless help and motivation. Even in the hardest hours, they just say that you can and you will make it...and you do, thanks to their experience and taking the time to know each and everyone they take up the mountain, just because safety is always first and they know what we’re up against! Special thanks to Imrani, MJ and Johnson, our most recent friends in Tanzania!

Acclimatization went great, along with everyday briefings, food was excellent, portable shower and toilet tents were terrific!

Sabino and Redeem, thank you for making things easy during planning this huge adventure!

The Gold Standard for Tourism Companies
Dec 2019
I was teaching in Tanzania for two months and decided to spend my holiday break hiking the Machame trail of Mt. Kilimanjaro. I was a little hesitant to hike the mountain by myself, but I was extremely lucky to find the very best tour company and hiking campions: Popote I can't thank you enough.

I found Popote through a fortunate recommendation. It was from a local who is in the tourism business themselves. They told me that Popote was the very best tour company hiking Kilimanjaro today, and I will happily attest to this being the case. Everything from the start of my initial inquiry to the completion of my trip was smooth, comfortable, and easy. Popote was extremely responsive and went the extra mile (literally) to coordinate travel from where I was living to the mountain. My arrangement was much further than their regular pick-ups. They did not ask for more money or make it seem like an inconvenience at all. That is rare and made a terrific first impression.

When I arrived at the hotel, I was greeted by my tour guide, Thadeus, who helped me check into the hotel and then came to my room to check my belongings. Thadeus was knowledgable, experienced, and fun to be around. He knows everything about the mountain and made me feel very safe and comfortable with the acclimatization. We became fast friends and I was very appreciative that I got to spend the hike with him and the porters. There was plenty of food and water on the trip. If anything, there was too much food, which is not something to complain about, but I did have trouble finishing my delicious meals. The Popote team made sure I was eating enough food and drinking enough water.

The majority of the climb was pretty moderate. Each day had a different terrain: rainforest, moon land, boulders, rivers/waterfalls, and snow. This kept every day fresh with breathtaking beauty. My hike was at the end of December. It rained heavily every day except for summit day (Thank goodness!), but it usually cleared just in time for sunset. The views at every campsite were incredible, each one being very different.

The summit day was challenging and was the only day where the altitude got to me. Thadeus managed the tough day perfectly. I had a tendency of going too fast and he was there to keep our pace in check. He also timed our summit perfectly. We hit exactly at sunset and were fortunate to get incredible pictures from the top. My summit picture is my most liked Instragram post by far!

I really could not have asked for more from Popote. Their execution should be the gold standard for tourism companies. You will not go wrong with them. Trust me, it is worth the extra bucks to go through Popote. In future years, you will not remember the extra bucks that you spend going with Popote, but you will remember the incredible experience with a company that you can trust is going to keep you safe, get you to the top, and make you feel as comfortable as possible every step of the way. Thank you Popote.

One team, one dream, nonstop to the top!
We used Popote for our 2 week vacation, and they helped organize and book everything - airport transfer, entire Kilimanjaro trek, lodging, meals, and our 5 day safari. Radeem was very responsive via email prior to our trip so that all of our questions were answered.

For kilimanjaro, our guides Mambo and Stanley were awesome, helping us the whole way. They made sure we stayed safe and healthy and that were having a good time. The porters and chef Chinga were great as well, making sure we were comfortable and very well fed. The team kept everyone very positive and we thankfully made it to the peak! The climb was overall challenging but definitely doable, and we felt supported the whole way. It's an amazing experience and so glad we did it!

For safari, we did 5 days with our guide, Tuma, who was also great. He was very knowledgeable about the wildlife that we saw. We got to see the big 5 and several others! The jeep was new, comfortable, and clean - equipt with icebox and outlets. We did the luxury package, and our lodging and food accommodations far exceeded our expectations.

Popote is a local company, so you support local industry by using them. The price is less than other companies we looked at, but the quality is still excellent and we would recommend them!

Just Book it!!!
Oct 2019
Myself and my boyfriend did the 7 day machame Kilimanjaro climb and 5 day safari with Popote in October 2019. I had been dreaming about doing this trip for 3 years and in December 2018 I finally pulled the pin and decided to start planning. I was SO overwhelmed by the amount of tour companies and information out there especially for the Kilimanjaro hike. I am usually fairly carefree with who I book with but this trip I knew I wanted to spend the time and make sure I was going with a reputable and safe company while also not blowing my entire life savings. After about a month of researching I came across Popote and wow am I sure glad I did. From the beginning Sabino was so helpful and very responsive to all my questions (and I had a lot). They really thought of everything and my entire trip I felt very well cared for and safe. The team of 11 that took us up the mountain were great, as well as the meals and all the gear. We made it safely to the summit while having a great time. The safari was no expectation, the food and accommodations were excellent. We did the mid-range and were very happy with all of our accommodations and had so much fun in the "glamping" tents.

I really can not say anything but good things about Popote. They fit in my budget (which was important to me because you can easily spend your entire life savings in Africa), the staff was wonderful, the food was great, the owner and office team was very helpful and attentive. Basically the sum of the story is book with Popote and you will not regret it.

One thing to add: If you are doing the hike on the last day when they have the tipping ceremony, ALL tour companies (not just Popote) will read out how much you tipped each person in front of the whole group while they all stare at you. Thankfully we did not cheap out on our tip but just a word of advice to budget for a large tip unless you want to be shamed in front of your entire team that just helped you climb a mountain. We found it quite an awkward experience and we walked by multiple camps with other hikers from other companies having the same experience.

Yiiew Popote!! Highly recommended!!
Oct 2019 • Friends
I recently climbed Kilimanjaro with 3 friends and the Popote crew and the experience exceeded expectations in all respects.
The climb was tough but the Popote team were super encouraging and did everything they could to ensure we were well taken care of and that we all made the summit!! Our guides Florian, Paramba & Sanka were awesome leaders with a strong focus on safety and kept us well paced to ensure we acclimatised well.

The porters were absolute legends, charging ahead of us to ensure at each stop, we would arrive to dry tents, hot drinks and popcorn!
The food prepared by Sadik was excellent and plentiful with waiter/‘client liaison’ Willy making sure we ate plenty and had enough water, dry socks and gloves and everything we could possibly need - not to mention being around for a pep talk when the day 5 exhaustion tears set in.

I would highly recommend Popote for your Kilimanjaro adventure as they had the climb strategy nailed whilst making the whole experience super fun. We went with them for Safari too - which was also seamless.

My mate did most of the organising/ communication pre-travel and Sabi & Redeem were always super prompt to respond to our multitude of questions.

I could not have asked for anything more of Popote. It was an experience I will never forget and best of all, they are a local company!

Best Experience Of My Life Thanks to Popote
Mar 2019
My husband and I climbed Kili in March 2019 (a season that is not normally recommended but was cheaper and easy to make happen with work schedules) and I was somewhat nervous about it as I haven't climbed before - Popote made it a breeze! They helped with ALL logistics, were so much fun to be around, very supportive - physically and emotionally, and truly felt like family by the end of the trek. I was most impressed by our porters, cooks, and guides outlooks on life and they seemed to truly love what they do and working for Popote which was very important for me. We learned so much about Africa, Kili and the Swahili language, and I truly feel like I left my heart on that mountain thanks to Popote. I did TONS of research prior to choosing a company to trek with and I'm SO glad we went with Popote. I'd recommend them to anyone - experienced or new to climbing...they will also give you the best experience of your life if you let them!

Thank you Popote for everything - I love you all so much!
