This experience tour offers the opportunity to make your own miniature Gifu paper lantern, from creating the framework using higo (bamboo strips), laying the paper over the strips and finally to adding your own design. This activity is sure to give you great satisfaction, as you draw a design of your liking onto the paper lantern after completing the steps to make it—just like a craftworker would!
As the largest river port city along the Nagara River, Gifu is home to industries such as Japanese umbrella and paper lantern manufacturing from times of old. These industries use washi (Japanese paper), bamboo and other products that arrived from upstream. The Bon lanterns, Noryo lanterns and many other products that originate from Gifu are widely known as “Gifu-chochin,” or Gifu paper lanterns.
Wouldn’t you like to take home a softly-glowing paper lantern made of Japanese paper, made from ever-present traditional techniques?
