About
Hidden high in the mountains of central Japan, far from the hustle and bustle of metropolises like Tokyo and Osaka, lie the quaint and well-preserved townscapes of Takayama and Shirakawa-go. Once a direct land holding of the Shogun, Takayama will enthrall you with its beautiful woodwork and traditional streets that offer a more relaxed beauty than cities such as Kyoto and Kanazawa. Shirakawa-go, on the other hand, offers a great example of the village-life experienced by Japanese farmers of ages past, and still experienced today by those lucky few who call it their home. Led by a locally-based and English-speaking guide, this experience will enthrall you with visions of life in Japan during an era very different from our own.

- 466daenac0 contributionsWe had an exeptional tour with Jens!We had a wonderful day with Jens and Umematsu. Both were professional and full of great information to share. In addition, they were extremely patient and flexible, and accommodated us in every way. Our time with them exceeded our expectations, and we could not have been happier with our tour. Thank you, Jens and Umematsu, and we hope to see you again on our next visit to Japan!Written 23 March 2025
- LisaTravels8080 contributionsEdo Period tour worth the splurgeWhat a lovely tour with Joyce, our knowledgeable and professional guide. We had our own private transportation to Matsumoto Castle, Frog Street and Narai-juku, a unique Edo Period village. Joyce narrated for us the whole time and recommended a delicious Okinawa restaurant and the best ice cream shop for dessert. We walked a ton and learned a lot. Narai-juku is a bit more off the beaten path, a period village set in the mountains. It was so magical!! After the tour, Joyce and our driver dropped off us at a train station closer to our next destination. They helped us buy tickets and set us off. Highly recommend touring with them!Written 23 March 2025

Our driver, Iwasaki-san, was very kind. The trek is very manageable, the views are incredible, and closing at Magome was a perfect end to a great tour. Would strongly recommend.Written 22 March 2025

- 613aimeem0 contributionsNot to be missedBeth was the perfect guide to show me the gems I other wise would’ve missed in Ueno Park. On my own I might’ve skipped a national history museum, but she pointed out the beauty of the building as well as some items of historical relevance. We saw several temples and shrines in the park and she spoke to their age, history and uniqueness. There was time to just sit in a beautiful spot, or grab a cool drink as she share more about the Japanese culture and history. The second part was as interesting as the first as we explored a neighborhood of Yanaka and a captivating museum/house/workshop of a Japanese sculptor who had a center of the home peaceful water garden. More gems I would’ve missed if not for our guide. The itinerary works well with lots of interesting destinations but with ease and flexibility. Highly recommend.Written 22 March 2025
- Kathleen Y0 contributionsExcellent TourWe specially enjoyed Dae’s expertise and history of the tour and allowing us to wander around and rejoin when we wanted to around the Zenkoji temple. It was super special we even got to see the highest priestess monk, who blessed us. But what a fantastic and well organized package! I compared other tours packages from other companies and this was the best for the price! Great times and a good crew of people to meet and hang out with.Written 21 March 2025

- yuhuio7750 contributionsA Must-Try for History and Ninja Fans! This tour is a fantastic off-the-beaten-path experience, away from the usual tourist crowds. The guide brings ninja legends to life with fascinating storytelling, and the ninja shooting experience—throwing shuriken is an absolute highlight. With hidden historical spots and an intimate setting, this tour offers a truly unique and authentic adventure. Perfect for those looking to dive deep into Japan’s secret past! - Nicole K0 contributionsA great tour in Nagano! It exceeded expectations! We thought we’d only be trying 3-4 different sake but we ended up trying at least 8! Both Joyce and Takeshi were welcoming, informative and friendly. And we were given enough time at each attraction we went to! Also, they gave us a great recommendation for dinner after the tour finished! Overall would recommend.Written 18 March 2025
- yuhuio7750 contributionsBreathtaking view of the stunning cliffsThe breathtaking cliffs of Tojinbo were a true highlight, with dramatic coastal views and fascinating geological insights. The visit to the spiritual island of Oshima felt serene and mystical, while the historic port town provided a glimpse into Fukui’s maritime heritage. It was an adventurous visit to the Oshima island which we definitely wouldn’t have done it without our guide (Kudos to Garrett) ! The guide’s engaging storytelling and expertise made the journey both educational and immersive. Highly recommended for nature lovers!Written 18 March 2025
- yuhuio7750 contributionsInsightful and enriching experienceDespite the rain, this tour was an insightful and enriching experience in Fukui. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, providing deep historical and cultural insights that brought each location to life. Eiheiji Temple, with its serene atmosphere and stunning Zen architecture, was a highlight, offering a glimpse into the traditions of Soto Zen Buddhism. Walking through Fukui Castle Town was equally fascinating, with well-preserved sites and engaging stories about the region’s samurai past. The guide’s expertise and passion made the tour both educational and enjoyable. Highly recommended for history and culture enthusiasts!Written 18 March 2025

I was in Takayama for one day and initially did not plan to book a tour. As a solo traveler I’d usually like to explore things independently. I made a last minute decision to book for the tour solely because of the history of Takayama and Shirakawago, and to minimise stress of finding transport. It was one of the best decisions I made for my Japan trip. Hemi led the tour in a way that made me feel like having a knowledgeable local friend throughout. It’s great hearing stories about the places as you walk by them, got introduced some of the best local spots in Takayama. We ended up having lunch together (not part of the tour) at a nice Takayama Ramen shop.

We had a great tour of the historic Takayama government building followed by a walk through the old district. Our guide recommended a really great Ramen restaurant for lunch. We took a bus to Shirakawago and toured the old village. It was a great day. Our guide was enjoyable to talk with and gave us great information about the history of the sites we explored. It was like touring with an old friend.

We really enjoyed our day out with Hemi. We had been in Takayama a day already and had already walked through the town so Hemi was flexible showing us other parts of Takayama we hadn't already seen - the visit to the Jinya in Takayama was excellent - we got so much more out of this visit with Hemi's knowledge and interesting facts. we enjoyed lunch with Hemi's recommendation at a traditional local restaurant and the afternoon at Shirakawago was fantastic. This was probably our favourite part of our Japan trip and really appreciated this day tour helping to bring these most interesting and beautiful towns to life. Thanks Hemi for the experience.

It was the best tour I've ever experienced. I've met various tour guides around the world, but Hemi stood out as one of the finest—knowledgeable not only in guiding but also exceptionally attentive and pleasant in nature. Thank you so much. As a Japanese, I appreciated receiving comprehensive information from Hemi about the newly visited Takayama city and Shirakawa-go, ranging from historical contexts to the current status as popular tourist destinations, including tips on where to find delicious local food. Thanks to Hemi, I was able to enjoy and understand the local scene on a much deeper level. This tour is highly recommended even to Japanese visitors.

We only had one day in Takayama, but we wanted to see both Takayama and Shirakawago. So this guided walk around the old town in the morning and another guided walk around Shirakawago in the afternoon was perfect for us. The tour included transport between both places. Devin, our guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. A thumbs up though to future trippers: if you’re going in cold weather, make sure you wear warm socks as part of the tour was inside with shoes off, and with snow on the ground outside, our feet got very cold! A great day though - thank you Devin and our friendly driver.

Devon is a very knowledgeable tour guide that blew us away with a ton of interesting information that really enriched the experience in takayama and shirakawago. One of the best parts is his breadth of knowledge and passion when discussing Japanese history and culture. We were asking him questions that went beyond the tour locations themselves and learned so much. If you want to have a very educational private tour and have all the transportation arranged for you, then you should book this tour. The only thing is that food isn't included, but they chose a restaurant in shirakawago that was excellent.

Our tour was well planned with a guide who knew the significance of the cultural experience we had hoped for. The overall experience was good. We were fortunate to not only benefit from an English speaking guide, but one who understood the Japanese.

I took their Takayama to Shirakawa go tour for first day. And then for 2nd day is the Kanazawa Tour. The tours they offer are good value for money. I strongly recommend to join their tours to maximize your travel time. Their tour guides are very good also. What I like about them (so far) are their English speaking guides. You can actually understand them (their accent) because its really their first language. But I hope in the future they would accept more solo travelers.
