Highlights
A great choice for visitors wanting an authentic local experience
Learn how to make mochi rice cakes with a guide to translate for you
Visit local towns like Ogi that would be difficult to get to alone
Lunch and taxi ride is included
What to expect
Take the train from Kyoto to Ogotoonsen station (own expense) and meet your guide at a pre-arranged spot. Then, travel together in a taxi to Ogi village, set in the Japanese countryside. Learn about the local agriculture, as you walk through the rice fields, which date back 1,300 years. Understand the importance of Shintoism to Japanese people by visiting the Ogura shrine. A highlight of the day is visiting a local rice farmer’s house. You are handed a giant mallet, and take part in a mochi rice cake making lesson. As you bash steaming sticky rice, it begins to form into a dough for rice cakes. Learn about the local way of making mochi (with fermented soybeans), and also watch some other cooking preparations too. The local farmer makes sukiyaki (a type of hot pot with meat and vegetables) and tell you about local Japanese life. The tour will end at the train station.

A Warm Welcome and Great Food
Mar 2020
My wife and I had a wonderful time visiting this charming couple who are traditional famers living in the hills opposite Lake Biwa. We enjoyed the process of mochi-making - quite energetic wielding the huge wooden hammer to soften the rice! Watching sukiyaki being made was memorable and the results were delicious. Mistako is an excellent guide and we enjoyed the company of the Kosakas through her skilful and sensitive translation. Osaka San likes to shock his guests with the offer of some snake wine after the meal, but if you don't fancy that there are more palatable plum and quince alternatives!

Highlight of our trip!
Feb 2020
We had a wonderful tour through the community’s Shinto shrine, and then a walk through the town before going to our hosts’ home to learn how to make mochi (SO MUCH FUN!!!!). Then we shared a delicious meal together in the congenial company of our hosts and guide. This was a special opportunity, and one we will not forget. Make a plan to include it in your trip plans!!!! Not to be missed!!!!!!!

An Unforgettable and Intimate Experience
Jan 2020
My brothers and I just spent two weeks in Japan, and this was our favorite experience. Simple, yet incredibly intimate, engaging, and we all felt we like we took away a new found appreciation for Japanese culture at the end.

We toured with Misako and met the Kosaka family. Not only do you get to make mochi rice cakes but you also enjoy a wonderful lunch made with vegetables and chicken. Mr. Kosaka didn't speak much English but this made it even more engaging and authentic as we could laugh and smile while making the mochi and still communicate through Misako.

Having been throughout Kyoto, Hiroshima, Tokyo and a number of smaller cities, I can't recommend this experience enough.

We can't thank you enough for trusting your boss' recommendation and choosing us! You were the first guest for us in the year 2020 and the tour was so much fun. We truly wish your bright future and hope to have an opportunity to show you more of what Shiga offers if you have a chance to be back here again. Thank you! Misako, Miki and Hiromi

Phenomenal Experience
Oct 2019
This by far was one of the most memorable experiences my wife and I had while traveling in Japan. We were greeted by Ms. Saori-san who took us on a very interesting tour of a local Shinto shrine followed by an absolutely incredible mochi making and lunch by Mr. Tsuji-san and Mrs. Kitagawa-san who were beyond welcoming.

This experience was one of, if not our most favorite experiences while visiting Japan.

A personal insight into Japanese traditional life
Nov 2019
Our guide Saori gave us a deeply personal and touching experience of the Shinto effect on rural Japanese life, though our historic Shrine visit, walk through the rice fields and acting as translator for our farm home visit. Otsu-Oji is a peaceful village not far from Kyoto by train where the pace of live really slows down. Our host Mr Tsuij opened his home to us and with Mrs Kitagawa, my wife and I had fun making Mochi from rice from his fields. We then shared a traditional lunch of may dishes around a freshly cooked Sukiyaki and enjoyed great conversation translated by our guide Saori. We left feeling that we had shared some Japanese traditions with new friends.

Fun and informative excursion
Nov 2019
I thoroughly enjoyed this tour with guide Saori and mochi-making and lunch hosts Mr. and Mrs. Kosaka, who have a terrific sense of humor and made me feel welcome in their home. The mocha and lunch were fantastic! The gardens and temples in Kyoto are wonderful, this was a change of pace that was every bit as memorable in its own way. My tour agent suggested this, and I'm happy I went.

Thank you so much for the wonderful review. In fact, a lot of our guests didn't even know what they can experience here and were so happy that they followed the agent's advice (haha). We were glad that you chose this tour and shared a lovely time with Saori and Kosakas!

Plenty still to learn from a tour like this, after 20 years living in Japan!
Nov 2019
I thoroughly recommend this tour, whether you are visiting Japan for the first time, looking for a unique insight on Japanese customs and a glimpse of what it means to live by and for the land here, or whether you've been here ever since, but are still ready to learn more from experienced guides ready, willing and able to explain all those things you may have looked at, without ever truly seeing them. We had a lot of laughs while learning about spirituality, culture and community on the tour, and it was perfectly paced, leaving us plenty of time to absorb everything, and ask any questions we might have. This is a sensitive and well-thought out tour, and makes for a brilliant day out. Just make sure you bring an appetite, because the fresh mochi and home cooking are out of this world!
