What to Expect
Visit: Astrophysical Observatory, Observatory 23 Astrophysical Institute, Almaty 050020 Kazakhstan

The Observatory of Fesenkov Astrophysical Institute is located in the city of Almaty, on the altitude of 1450m above the sea level (plateau Kamenskoye). The institute was founded in October 1941. The history of the observatory started from the expedition to observe the total solar eclipse of 21 September 1941, in Almaty.

The expedition consisted of scientists from Moscow and Saint Petersburg. During the World War II, the expedition memebers could not return home and it was decided to establish the Research Institute of Geophysics, Astronomy and Physics in Almaty due to the conductive geographical location of the city.

The Observatory itself was built later in 1948, it is an excellent example of Soviet time architecture. Now Observatory operates 4 telescopes, one of those is 120 years old and was received by Soviet Union from Germany during reparation.

FAPHI conducts both observational and theoretical research. The prime objects of observations are the Sun, outer planets, comets, Herbig Ae/Be stars, and active galaxies.

Interesting facts about the Observatory and the Research Institute:

▪ The comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko, famous for the Rosetta mission, was discovered at Fesenkov Astrophysical Institute.

▪ FAPHI was one of the first institutions where a new branch of science - astrobiology - was born in the middle of the twentieth century.

Observatory conducts regular excursion, where you can hear interesting lectures and look at the celestial bodies through the telescopes.

The Observatory at the plateau Kamenskoye is the only Observatory open for the tourists in Kazakhstan!
