Here the Orangutans are being nurtured to re-adapt themselves to the jungle life. It is also home to numerous baby orangutan, born in the wild to rehabilitated mothers, a further testament to the success of the program. You will have to chance to observe the semi-wild orangutans coming out of the forest for the feeding time. Before arriving at the feeding platform, you will have a brief experience walking through the amazing untouched rainforest. As a result of its success, Semenggoh's role has changed and it is nowadays a center for the study of orangutan biology and behavior. A visit to Semenggoh is a once a lifetime experience to see semi-wild orangutan, ranging from tiny infants and boisterous adolescents to dignified mature adults, enjoying life in a secure natural habitat. Enthusiastic, knowledgeable and very articulated. He made the visit so enjoyable and it was wonderful to see all the staff enjoying what they are doing. Certainly recommend this and special mention to Papoi ( not sure if I got it correctly but we joked that his name is similar to Popeye) We know that he is half Bajau.Written 21 August 2023

- ckdc20180 contributionsA little disappointed to what we were expecting due to nursery being closedLovely walk through the forest Great conservation work in their semi nature environment Feeding is on a table that you watch from distant At the time of visiting we had to wear face masks due to possibility of contamination The path down to the nursery was cut off due to fallen tree so we couldn’t access that which was disappointing Then after watching them feed that was the end and exited to see the sun bears which was lovelyWritten 1 May 2023
- Aussietravellers190 contributionsA must do in Kota KinabaluHighly recommend this tour - transfers to/from our hotel in Kota Kinabalu were on time in a clean and comfortable vehicle. Upon arrival organised into groups with a local guide (descendent from one of the indigenous tribes) to learn more about the 5 tribes of Sabah. Throughout the tour learnt about the long houses, making clothes, food, rice wine, starting a fire (without matches). The most fun was the trampoline in the long house and meeting a chief (descendent of a headhunter). Entertainment with local music and dance. Prior to leaving a cooked lunch (for those on the morning tour). Highly recommended for all visitors no matter the age.Written 24 April 2023
- QueenKavanaugh0 contributionsAn Unforgettable ExperienceThis was a wonderful day. I had the best guide ever. My guide was Antoni. He was very knowledgeable and gave me tips on how to take pics of the Orangutans. he made sure I was in the right place to see them when they come to feed. I got great pictures. When we went to the Culture Center, he explained all of the exhibits in each of the houses, and told me about his childhood experiences using many of the tools that we saw. I highly recommend this experience and I hope you get Antoni as your guide. Also he is a great picture taker!!Written 3 April 2023
- Victoria S0 contributionsBeautiful creatures great projectSuch a great place, the work they undertake to protect the species is fantastic far more than a centre. Learn around the work / the project and the care that goes in to this program. We were lucky enough to get close to a min inquisitive mother and baby. Such beautiful animals. Wear grippy shoes as the boardwalk can become skippy with humidity and the moss on floorWritten 23 March 2023

Very disappointing visit. Whilst there is no guarantee of seeing the gorgeous orangutans we sit through a 20 minute briefing on the do’s and dont’s and then it falls flat because no orangutan in site. Having been to Sepilok we felt this was a waste of time and money. All there was, was a small presentation video room and a few photos - not even a shop to buy stuff, though there was a stall seller in car park. They should make this a more interesting centre if you are unable to see an orangutan. Felt so flat and will not go again.

Dear Sir, Madam,
Good Day
I am very sorry for your disappointment. Semenggoh Center has been establish since the 1980's , dedicated to rehabilitating Orangutans. having visitor such as your good self contributes to the upkeep of this center. We are truly sorry they were no Orangutans although the Fruit Buffet was set up daily. As the orangutans mature from the rehabilitation program , they are release to the Semenggoh Forest Reserve. Freely to roam the forest canopy and return to the center for a fruit buffet. Fruit trees in the forest with it's scents of different fruit trees may have the Orangutans swinging from tree to trees searching for the fruit.
On your next trip to Borneo , please visit Sandakan . Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary.
We look forward to serve you again.

Stunning experience! We saw 5 oerang oetans including a young babe (born in Jan-22) at the morning feeding. You can get really close and see them grab/eat fruit laid out by the staff. Staff btw are very friendly and really teach you about the the oerang oetans. Would definitely recommend: 10/10.

Dear Sir
We are so happy you have enjoyed this short tour we have compiled on Semenggoh. The center goes way back when it was a center for rehabilitation for Orang Utans. Many have graduate and return to the wild but still return to the center for the fruit buffet.
Please share your experience with others , until we serve you again on your next visit.

One can take grab from the city. After buying ticket, shuttle will take you to the feeding area. If you go in fruit season then orangutang go deep in jungle to feed them self, they do not come to feeding station. Ranger do their best to call them to feeding station. From shuttle drop off point take a little difficult path to viewing platform, to watch orangutang.

Truly not in the days plans as we strive to provide clients with the best experience at Semenggoh Orangutan Center. The center has since see many Orangutans graduates , thanks to a successful programme that started since the 1980's. If there are fruits deep in the forest , sometimes they don' come to the feeding platform. A indication the Orangutans have adapted well into their natural habitat.
We wish to see you again on your next visit.

It wasn't a good experience, we didn't see any orangutans, I suppose that it was because of the fruit season, but I don't know, so don't go when is fruit season because you will be as dissapointed as us.

Despite the heavy rain we were lucky enough to see 3 of these amazing “old men of the jungle” in a semi wild environment. We could have just sat and watched them for hours however viewing time is understandably controlled so that visitor impact is minimised.
Now a have an even greater respect for all efforts to protect the habitat of these wonderful creatures to ensure they don’t disappear from the planet.

We spend about 2 hours just immersed into the environment and enjoyed the orangutan activities. The guide actually know the orangutan by names and we further can narrate the relation which give us better in depth knowledge of their naturally habitat. Was told that there are days when none will appear so we count ourselves lucky to see a whole family that day. Definitely a location not to be missed which in Kuching

Possibly the highlight of our trip to Borneo. An incredible experience - one that I would recommend everyone does. A really great interaction with the animals. The carers are really conscious about keeping the animals separate from human contact. The animals aren't wild, but they clearly aren't domesticated either - they are free to come and go as they please, and have full reign over a huge jungle with no limits. This was really important for us because we hate zoo's and fake wildlife experiences - this is far from that. 100% would recommend and go again.

We went to the centre for the afternoon feed, and it did not disappoint. We had tried to see Orangs in the wild, but had failed and so this was our last chance. As the rangers called out, a mother and baby came to feed and stayed for almost an hour. Excellent experience

We had a great trip to the reserve, which was only half an hour outside the centre of kuching.
David our tour guide was amazing, he explained all there was to know in our time with him about orangutans, other animals in the area as well as the surrounding forest.
We were lucky to see an orangutan not long after we arrived, he was the dominant male "Ritchie". He fed for half an hour whilst we managed to take some cool photos of him and observe him in the wild.
Great trip, great guide!
