What to expect
This half day tour takes place along the eastern part of the major dune belt which lies between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. Here the ecology of the dunes is concentrated on explaining the evolutionary aspects and the uniqueness of these adaptations. The theory part is dealt with in an informal way and the various desert adapted creatures are then searched for and the various interesting adaptations are pointed out to you. The main animals looked for are the Namib Sand diving Lizard, Web-footed Gecko, Namaqua Chameleon, Peringuey’s Adder(Sidewinder), Namib Sand Snake, Namib thick-tailed Scorpion, the fog basking Tenebrionid Beetle and several other insects only found along the dune belt. From the dunes we walk through a place known as ‘The Horse Graveyard'. Here, the mass slaughter of South African military horses marked the turning point of Namibia's (then South West Africa) involvement in the First World War. This area, holding some 1,600 carcasses, signifies the key role that Swakopmund and Walvis Bay played in the development of Namibia.  A brief description of the minerals found in the dunes is also explained as well as the formation of the dunes and the importance of the coastal fog to all the living organisms and vegetation found along the dunes. The only birds that may be encountered here depending on rainfall are Tractrac Chat, Red-capped Larks, Gray’s Lark, Stark’s Lark, Burchell’s Courser, Ludwig’s Bustard, Rock Kestrel and Rufous-eared Warbler. Excellent photographic opportunities.

Half a day out in the sand dunes
Mar 2020
We did the tour recently with our guide Buzz. That was a great experience in the sand dunes!!! We got lots of information from Buzz and he found all those little creatures sometimes deep in the sand: chameleon, lezard, gecko, snakes and scorpion. Learned a lot of interesting things about these little animals. Thank you, Buzz, and we highly recommend the tour.

Best tour of our vacation
Oct 2019
We spent four hours in the desert being shown how all the wild life coexist. Our guide (Collin) was so good that he could spot the smallest hole in the sand, dig down a little and come up with a gecko. Who knew there was so much wild life in the desert. Well worth the money. Can not recommend this tour enough, it should be a must do for those who don't want to 4X4 over dunes.

We can not recommend this more highly. Amazing knowledgeable guide took us on the Desert Tour. Explored the hidden gems of the desert. Very different experience. Amazing what Guide could find in seemingly barren desert. Lots of surprises. Heard their birding safaris are excellent.

Not Just Birding but Everything Namibia
Jun 2019
From my first contact, Berenike Behrens was instrumental in planning an 18-day guided Namibia safari, working out the itinerary I proposed, finding the best accommodations throughout, and often being able to confirm the specific units I requested. Our guide, Sean Braine, met us on our arrival at Hosea Kutako Airport and presented us with a detailed trip portfolio, including bird and mammal checklists. He pointed out mammals, birds, and plants while driving to the Kalahari. On our first night in the Namib, he used a UV light to reveal a tiny scorpion between the bricks of a walkway at our lodge. He found a Namib web-footed gecko at Sossusvlei and showed us the endemic dune lark. He located desert-adapted elephant and black rhino in Damaraland and showed us isolated rock engravings. He found Cinderella waxbills at Kunene River Lodge. In addition to a number of black rhinoceros, several with calves, he found a white rhinoceros in Etosha where we also saw a cheetah, an African wildcat, and honey badgers. I doubt that we could have found a driver/guide more familiar with Namibia and its wildlife than Sean Braine.

Superb morning's herping in the Swakopmund dunes
Aug 2019
Excellent morning being guided around the smaller inhabitants of the dunes near Swakopmund. Our guide Colin was excellent: friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We saw a legless lizard, a Namib Sidewinding Adder (truly an excellent spot), a web-footed gecko and a Namaqualand chameleon, with lots of extra info about the various bits and pieces lying around the desert. A really enjoyable trip and well worth the money.

Namibia At It's Best tour
Jun 2019 • Family
We wanted to organize a self drive trip to Namibia with a combination of rooftop camping and DBB to mix it up and found it hard to make specific bookings and we had no real idea where to go . We were recommended Batis Safaris by colleagues and I am glad we went with them. Right from the first contact with Berenike to last minute changes everything went smoothly and nothing was too much trouble. The sites we booked to camp were amazing and the driving distances to each location were well thought out and easily achievable with two young kids. What separates this company from all the rest is their attention to detail. The website they create for your itinerary(which is also printed out and sent to you as a hard copy) is amazing so relatives can also see what we were upto, importantly it has all you need such as background info on venues things to do and prices of side trips including specific Google Maps directions is great as often you don't have cell coverage in remote areas. The desert eco tour they ran out of Swakopmund was a highlight and one our kids are still talking about.
We have used many agents over the years and if you want a hassle free trip to explore the amazing country of Namibia do yourself a favour and go straight to them and you won't be disappointed.

Great Tour
Apr 2019 • Couples
My husband and I took their Living Desert tour while in Swakapmund and were not disappointed. The guides were very knowledgeable with the desert species in the local area. We saw Desert Chamelians, Adders, several species of lizards as well as the flora. It was a great tour and I highly recommend it.

Amazing discovery of the desert’s wildlife
Apr 2019 • Family
My family (including our two teenager sons) and I very much enjoyed the desert tour organized by Batis safaris. The guides were extremely knowledgeable and incredibly gifted at spotting desert animals (including snakes, chameleon and geckos) in the dunes. The explanations provided were both precise and interesting. A really amazing, very enjoyable and highly stimulating experience!

Superlatives! Awesome and Informative!
Apr 2019 • Family
I cannot even begin to write how amazing this tour was for myself and my 7 year old daughter. No guarantees of wildlife they say but our amazing guides saw tiny footprints, slither lines, tracks and found us a chameleon, two snakes, a skink, and shovel headed lizard, in addition to a very inquisitive and hopeful little bird who followed our trucks. Our guides - it kills me I cannot remember their names - were top notch. I’ve been in countless tours, visited about 100 countries and territories, and this tour is one of the best!
