- amirsepehra0 contributionsUnforgettable Amazon Adventure at Chuncho Lodge! Our stay at Chuncho Lodge was absolutely phenomenal! From the moment we arrived, everything exceeded our expectations. The staff were incredibly warm and welcoming, making us feel right at home in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. Our guide Gabriel was the absolute star of the trip. With a lifetime of experience, his wildlife spotting skills were out of this world - he could identify animals just by their sounds! We saw an incredible array of wildlife including macaws, toucans, tarantulas, capybaras, monkeys, and caimans. The rooms were immaculately clean and thoughtfully designed, offering a perfect blend of comfort and wilderness experience. Each cabin provides privacy while still feeling connected to the incredible surrounding jungle. The lodge’s location is truly special - situated right on the banks of the Tambopata River, offering unparalleled access to the rainforest’s incredible biodiversity. The food was absolutely delicious - perfectly portioned and prepared to satisfy hungry adventurers after a day of exploration. Communication was seamless, and the entire experience felt personalized and intimate. Highly recommend Chuncho Lodge for anyone seeking an authentic, unforgettable Amazon adventure!Written 4 January 2025
- N261TDannas0 contributionsThe food was amazing! We stayed at the Chuncho Lodge in July 2024. Unfortunately the weather was cold and rainy during our stay and so we don't feel like our experience was typical. Nevertheless, our guide Carlos and the rest of the staff did their best to provide a good experience. We were travelling as a family of 5, with our three children aged 9, 11 and 14. In terms of the travel, everything was smooth. Our guide Carlos met us at the airport and stayed with us until the end of the trip, ensuring we got to the bus station on time at the end for the next leg of our journey. The lodge itself was comfortable and rustic. This was ideal for our family, but if you are someone looking for a luxury hotel experience you may be disappointed. The rooms are open to the air, and we found it cold at night but this may not be typical. On the second night, we were offered a second blanket which was welcome! The food was incredible - some of the best that we had in Peru. Our kids still talk about how great the food was at the Chuncho lodge. Kudos to the cooks, creating delicious meals without electricity! We went on a couple hikes through the jungle, and a boat ride to the Macaw Clay Lick, but we did not see much wildlife due to the cold rainy weather. The hike and canoe ride to Lake Sandoval was a highlight for us. We saw the otters playing and lots of birds and monkeys. Our guide Carlos was amazing at spotting things for us to see. Overall, we feel like we had an authentic experience in the Peruvian rainforest (it rained a lot!), despite the weather.Written 3 January 2025
- I2374CGpatrickk0 contributionsGreat trip and even better teamI did the 3 day trip and it was a blast. The team at the lodge around Raul (Guide), Mary (chef) and Climar (captain, support etc.) was soooo good. We felt very welcome and had a great time. The journey to the lodge is with Tuk Tuk, public speedboat, small boat and takes around 3 hours. Therefore at least 2 nights make sense. We did jungle walks in the night and during the day and saw turtles, many sloths, spiders, scorpions, monkey and birds. In addition we went fishing and ate our catch of the day. We did dolphin watching and saw pink and grey ones. We did a boat trip at night time to find alligators but saw „only“ their eyes. The lodge itself is nice but for sure don’t expect no luxury treatment…you are in the jungle. But there is a bathroom for every room, electricity for some hours per day and a very cool chill area. Thanks also to Walter and Joana who organized everything from reservation, pick up etc. Highly recommend!Written 18 December 2024
- sharpster080 contributionsSimply wonderful!!We visited on a 4 day tour and without doubt it was one of the highlights of our trip to Peru. We were met at the airport by Victor who turned out to be our guide for the whole trip and we were whisked off to the office to finalise the paperwork etc. We were then driven in the minibus to the harbour )lunch provided on the way) and took the short boat trip to Chuncho Lodge. We stayed here for 2 nights and it turned out to be a great experience. We had never really stayed in a rainforest environment before and it turned out to be an amazing experience. In summary, Victor was a superb guide who took us out on night walks where we saw huge tarantulas, frogs, snakes and countless other bugs....it was utterly fascinating. We climbed the huge canopy tower at sunset which gave us fantastic views and gave us an appreciation of the huge variety of trees there are here. The next day we took the trip to the clay lick to see the parrots and macaws, a wonderful experience! Our trip ended with a visit to Sandoval lake where we trekked through the rainforest, canoed on the lake at sunset and sunrise and saw so much wildlife such as cayman, howler monkeys, a huge variety of birds and even the elusive giant river otters. Chuncho Lodge itself was great, the accommodation was spacious, clean and although fairly basic it was more than adequate . The food was plentiful even if a bit dull but we hadn't come all this way for the food. The cold beers went down well and all the staff were so friendly! I really can't recommend this trip highly enough. It has provided us with such great memories. A special thanks to Victor for his expert knowledge and his friendliness. We enjoyed his company!Written 4 December 2024
- K S0 contributionsIncredible experience, don’t miss Sandoval lake!We did the 4 day, 3 night tour including Sandoval Lake and it was an amazing experience! The entire experience from pickup from our hotel to the very end was smooth and well planned out. Our guide, Gabriel, was incredible and was able to identify every animal just by sound. We saw macaws, toucans, tarantulas, capybara, monkeys, caiman, and more! Chuncho lodge was very nice and the food and staff were great. It’s also closer to the Macaw clay lick than most other lodges which was really nice since you have to get up early to get there and see them. It was HOT at the lodge but there is a nice hammock area that gets a breeze for your downtime and the main lodge has fans and electricity at all hours and also has WiFi. You have a fan in your room but there is only power from 6-10pm in the rooms to use it. Definitely use the mosquito nets as there are a few bugs in the rooms.. you are in the middle of the jungle so it makes sense! For the last night we were at a lodge on Sandoval lake that was more rustic.. it was very hot and there was nowhere really to hang out that was comfortable and no fans in the room so you are roughing it a bit.. but that was only for one night. You also need to walk two miles then a canoe ride to get there so make sure to pack a backpack, not a suitcase. We saw soooo many animals at the lake, sadly no giant otters, but this reserve was incredible and a can’t miss. Bring bug repellent, long pants that you tuck into your socks, and long sleeve shirts that are lightweight for sure. Overall we couldn’t have asked for more and are so grateful for our time with the Chuncho lodge staff!Written 3 December 2024
- Venture367723883730 contributionsAmazing experience! We had a great time at Chuncho Lodge! We did the 4D/3N trip with one night at Sandoval Lake. Everything was well organized - transfers, meals, activities - we didn't have to worry about anything. Chuncho Lodge itself is so beautiful and peaceful. I would have loved to stay there longer! The lodge at Sandoval was a bit more basic. All meals during our 4 days were great. Our amazing guide was Gabriel. He was very kind and patient and amazing at spotting and identifying wildlife! We saw tons of birds as well as a few capybaras, otters, monkeys, cayman and all sorts of insects.Written 23 November 2024
- Z2838BVsylviaa0 contributionsSo many birds!Wonderful trip to the Amazon rainforest. Our guide, Gabriel, was great. He was able to name all the birds we spotted on Lake Sandoval, and was very knowledgeable about the snakes, monkeys, and macaws. So glad I brought my binoculars — saw lots of capybaras!Written 26 October 2024
- rimgail_m20240 contributionsI want to come back!We really enjoyed the stay! Everythings was excelent: pick up at the airport, transportation to the lodge, lodge itself, all the jungle tours. The lodge exceeded our expectations! Delicious food, clean, speed Wifi, amazing people working there. Our guide Raymond was super awesome! He is an expert at the jungle life and showed us many increadable animals. Thank you so much! I highly recomend thia lodge!Written 25 October 2024
- OriginalUB0 contributionsChuncho was a wonderful jungle experienceWe had a great experience at Chuncho lodge! Two couples (all in our 50s) went for 3 day/2 night stay. The experience was excellent. Our main guide, Daguer (not sure of the spelling), was very good at spotting wildlife/insects/plants and explaining (facts &/or how they are used). The facilities are lovely and comfortable... despite it being quite hot outside, and despite not having electricity during the overnight (as they use a generator only at key times), we all slept well... that was a concern I had going in, but it was not an issue. The clay lick, the tower, the night hikes, and Lake Sandovol were all highlights. We also ran across a group of monkeys 3 different times (which was a lot of fun). The food and drinks were all very tasty as well (although that was our experience throughout our Peru trip... not just here). Overall, I would definitely recommend Chuncho Lodge to those looking for a jungle experience.Written 25 October 2024
- donbV6417XJ0 contributionsAmazing, wild experience! We had a great time and saw a lot of diverse wildlife, including at least ten kinds of parrots and macaws, giant river otters, tons of birds, so many monkeys, some tarantulas, a snake, and caiman alligators! We also glimpsed the rare tapir! We did the 4 day / 3 night package that includes the Chuncho parrot clay lick and Sandoval Lake. Chuncho Lodge assigned a guide, Carlos, who led us on all of our experiences and ate with us at all the meals. He was great to work with, very knowledgeable, experienced, and helpful. He really made sure this trip was special and successful for us. The main lodge room at Chuncho Lodge has chargers for phones and electronic devices all the time, games tables, and a lounge area. In spite of the hot, humid weather during the days, the nights were comfortable and less humid and good for sleeping.Written 6 September 2024
- M2697DBkatec0 contributionsBrilliant stay in the jungleWe went on a five day, four day trip with Chuncho Lodge. It was awesome. The lodge is in the middle of the forest and from the lodge we saw monkeys and many birds. The staff were warm and friendly and the atmosphere was great. The activities were brilliant. The river trips to see macaws, night walks and wildlife sighting walks were awesome. We saw so many birds and animals from capybaras to tarrantulas to howler monkeys. On the last night we stayed at Amasisa Lodge on Lake Sandoval. An ox bow lake. Although the accommodation was pretty basic it was totally worth it to see giant river otters, black caymans and so much more. Our guide Esau was the BEST!!!Written 27 August 2024
- familyhols650 contributionsQuick jungle visitWe did the 2night/3 day trip including a day trip to lake Sandoval. Family of 4. Collected early from airport and waited at office for 2 more to join our group. Car trip to the river after this. Didn’t see any animals on the journey. I was concerned about the building work comments but it wasn’t a problem as no construction noise was heard in the hours we were there in early August. They are renovating and rebuilding a few of the bungalows. We were a family of 4 in 2 bungalows that shared a roof so we could hear each other in the rooms but fine for us as a family. The bedroom was ok with 2 double beds and a new mosquito net around it. We did get quite a few bugs in the room by morning so glad of the nets. I don’t love not having electricity during the night but knew this when booked. It does feel very basic. The bathrooms were the worst bit - outdated with a bit of a whiff from the toilet and insects getting in. No hot water and only a curtain for a door and mesh so low that not much privacy for tall Europeans. A think they are renovating them though. We had a standalone fan for a few hours each day and it’s hot. The main lodge area was very pretty and nice gardens. Food was simple but decent with snacks and water/tea/coffee available. We had drinks from the bar. The main lodge was all screened so minimal insects. There were only 6 of us there when we first arrived. It was actually my birthday but the lodge hadn’t noticed that. It didn’t feel like a very personalised service considering the small group they did however cater for a vegetarian and nut allergy. We had a group of 6 with 2 lovely fun Mexican ladies (so everything in English and Spanish) but others seemed to be in smaller groups depending on arrival day. Maybe better for wildlife viewing. The activities were interesting but we didn’t see that many animals/birds compared to other countries we have visited and cost. There was gold mining going on in the area and they are making a lot of noise by the river. We saw a few coatis on first arrival and lots of butterflies but nothing else around the lodge area. Macaws do fly over the canopy and you can hear birds. We didn’t see much on our first walk, the canopy tower was interesting but a little scary as it’s quite wobbly. Lots of insects buzzing around. It was a nice view of the canopy but birds far away. Saw a tarantula and butterflies. Next day we went to the clay lick early by boat and did see lots of parrots and some macaws but as others have said they are far away. Our guide got us to look through other guides scopes to see close up and tried to take a couple of pics. He didn’t have one himself. Lunch was simple but good picnic style although no plates provided and battling wasps. We did enjoy this day as the boat was fun and he also took us to see another clay lick with more macaws briefly still far away until a boat scared them away. We had binoculars. We had a lovely view of capybaras. Later we went on a boat trip and it seemed just for swimming - we didn’t want to swim but others did so we just stood around and it was a bit boring. We would rather have more time on the river looking for wildlife. We did see capybaras again. Next morning we decided not to go back up the wobbly tower and were looking forward to lake Sandoval but had to wait until 10.15 to leave the lodge (with 2 others who also didn’t do the walk). . You then go by road back to the office and sit around there. We then had to walk about 5 mins in town and clamber down a bank and join a shared taxi full boat to lake Sandoval. The Madre de Dios river was good to see. We then sat around eating a takeout rice dish before starting the easy boardwalk to the lake. When we got to the lake it was already 2.30 and no boats were available. The guide said it was peak holidays and local families had them. With that in mind it didn’t seem well planned to wait til 1015 to leave the lodge. Whilst waiting around for about 45 mins we did see monkeys near the boat dock close up which was lovely. Finally on boat at nearly 3pm and we did enjoy this and saw birds, caiman and monkeys. The lake is very pretty and nice that it is quiet apart from other tourists as no motors. Didn't see otters. We had about 1 hr 15 mins on the lake. On the walk back we saw more squirrel monkeys jumping near the boardwalk close up. We then waited around for taxi boat to come back for us but got dropped off at our town hotel for the night which was great and they brought our luggage to us. Overall we enjoyed it but did feel it was quite expensive for what it was (vs other Peru prices) for our family of 4 as the lodge rooms are simple/no hot water and the Sandoval lake trip wasn’t well organised and felt just like a public trip rather than a private trip for our group of 6. We didn’t see many animals however must have been unlucky. We enjoyed being on lake Sandoval, seeing monleys there and the macaw trip/capybaras the most. Would have liked more time on river. Staff friendly. Sent from my iPhoneWritten 18 August 2024
- victoriajoanne930 contributionsExperience of a lifetime! We had the experience of a lifetime on our 3 day/2night trip to Chuncho Lodge. Right from the moment we were picked up from the airport the organisation was seamless. We were extremely lucky to be the only group arriving on our arrival date, so got our guide all to ourselves. Victor was incredible, and really went above and beyond to ensure we had the best time and saw everything we wanted to see. Once he found out it was my dream to see a sloth, he went out of his way to make sure it happened. His enthusiasm for the wildlife and natural environment really showed and made our experience even better. The macaw clay lick was a highlight and truly unmissable, as was seeing 5 giant river otters in Sandoval Lake. Victor was an expert at getting the best wildlife photos, even through binoculars on a moving boat! We will treasure these photos and memories forever. The lodge itself is beautiful, the staff are so kind and friendly and made us feel so welcome. The food is plentiful, at breakfast, lunch and dinner - you certainly won’t go hungry! There is a bar from which you can buy soft and alcoholic drinks and a recreation area with a mix of games such as table football and table tennis. One of our favourite places was the hammocks on the raised platform overlooking the river, and we really enjoyed our free time here with a cold beer and a book - just be sure to bring plenty of insect repellent, this is where we encountered the most mosquitos! Finally, our room was very comfortable and spacious, with an electric fan that was so welcome to cool the room down a little in the evenings. We didn’t have hot water but this actually didn’t matter - cold showers were very helpful in the high humidity. I think they are getting hot water soon though. We want to thank the staff at Chuncho for an absolutely unforgettable experience. We would recommend this lodge to anybody wanting an experience of the Peruvian Amazon.Written 17 August 2024
- Sharon N0 contributionsA Special Place in the JungleWhat a special place. We really loved our stay at Chuncho’s ecolodge. And we knew it was going to be great from the exchange between Daniel. Our flight from Lima was delayed, but Chuncho’s was there for a pick-up and a Peruvian lunch. Then when we got to the lodge-about a 15 minute boat ride from the port in Peurto Maldondo, we were greeted by friendly staff including Alvarez who was a standout staff member - always willing to help. We then met our amazing guide Gabriel. He took us to the tower for a sunset view of the canopy and then a most interesting night walk, where we looked for insects. Gabriel and the guides are very knowledgeable about the jungle and was a great storyteller also. From a practical perspective, the food was incredible. They always have snacks and tea and coffee at the lodge between meals. Our cabin was nice and rustic. It’s more of a glamping experience, but with running water and electricity. Wifi is only available at the lodge, but that is more than fine, given the lodge is in the jungle. We did experience some cool weather, so pack accordingly. Layers are key. Also there is a pair of binoculars you can rent. But for the claylick, the guides bring heavy duty telescopes to see the birds. We were so impressed! Thank you to Gabriel, Daniel and all the staff at Chuncho’s. And also thanks to Jorge who picked us up at the airport. Chuncho’s is top rated, and I surely experienced why.Written 11 August 2024
- J E0 contributionsClay lick big disappointment, very basic accomodation/ house to be shared with strangers, staff very nice and friendlyWe stayed in the Chuncho Lodge for 2 nights/ 3 days in July 2024 with our family of 4. We did enjoy our stay, which was due to the knowledgeable guide and the friendly staff in the Lodge. The food was also home made and excellent. The accomodation was however very disappointing and unpleasant. Our family of 4 was lodged in two rooms (8&9), which were in the house together with room 10. We had expected basic accommodation, and it was very basic or one could say run down, although that was not the problem. But what we had not expected was to share a house with strangers when there is no complete wall to the next room, the house e shared one roof and is basically open above the two meter wall, which means one could hear every word and noise from the neighbours including during the day, night (squeaky bed) and bathroom noises. We found this really disturbing, but given the lodge was full the first night there was no other option. Not satisfying when paying $600 for that night. The tower is ok for adults to climb as you can hold to in the inner part of the tower, but the sides are apart from some large crosses entirely open, with no security. So by European standards this would not be considered safe at all. The clay lick was the biggest disappointment, as the pictures show macaws from close by. However, you will only see them through really strong binoculars or telescopes, and you will be away 100+ meters and see the parrots or macaws only from the other side of the river. When we were there additionally there was only one macaw at the clay lick, probably due to cold weather. We felt the clay lick is being sold in a way that gives wring expectations, although that is not only an issue with the Chuncho Lodge. We continued the boat tour and with great effort from the great tour guide saw some white alligators, capybaras and many turtles which was great. We also saw a group of macaws in the trees and flying which was beautiful.Written 2 August 2024
