Itinerary
- 1You will descend into the underground where you'll completely be surrounded by salt. Walk on a man-made gallery, visit three mining chambers, learn about mining techniques and local urban legends and, nevertheless, take a boat or a Ferris-wheel ride. The visit of the mine involves climbing and descending some stairs. Most of the stairs can be avoided by taking two different elevators.

Greta was very knowledgeable about history, culture and was happy to answer our questions. She knew many people in the area which allowed us to meet them and see them at work. She took us to many different spots and was very flexible and considerate.Written 17 September 2024

- MysteryGuest700 contributionsWonderful sights, incredibly knowledgeable and cheerful guide! This was a fantastic and informative tour! My friend and I booked it two days in advance and they were very accommodating, hotel pickup included. Our guide was exceptionally knowledgeable and made the whole day wonderful, explaining to us many sides to Romanian history and culture. Sighisoara is a lovely town and very worth visiting. Unfortunately Biertan fortified church was unexpectedly closed, but our guide made other arrangements on-the-fly to take us to another nearby historical church which was also lovely to visit. The short stop at a gypsy coppersmith's house to browse his wares was also a great experience. Overall, I can't recommend this tour enough. It is a big day, but if you are interested in the history of Cluj and want to know more from a local's perspective, then this is the tour for you!Written 7 June 2020
- TheOneAndOnlyCMC0 contributionsGreat Day Learning About the History of RomaniaI greatly appreciated this tour from Geta. From the beginning of the tour she was friendly, helpful and full of useful facts. Being that she was from the local area helped immensely. We started off the day at the Turda Salt Mine - very interesting tour about the origins of the mine. I even got to row around the mini lake in one of the mines. Next we drove to and stopped at Rimitea Village. It was very insightful to learn about the blended history of this quaint town. We drove a bit further to have lunch at a B & B with an authentic Hungarian atmosphere. I especially enjoyed the good recommendations for food and local Transylvaninia beer. More driving took us to the final destination of Alba Iulia. What a wonderful place full of historic buildings, landmarks, and even an Orhtodox church. All in all, a wonderful experience with a great guide. I highly recommend this tour!Written 15 December 2019

He was incredibly knowledgeable about the history, the geology, facts regarding miners, horses, salt particles in the air and the salt in natural light versus artificial light. - OlgaJ82020 contributionsFascinating day in Carpathian MountainsDay 2 (see my review on Day 1 - Cluj walking city tour) As yesterday, Joseph picked us up from our hotel and we headed towards the Turda Salt Mines where we spent amazing 1,5 h. The drive to Rimetea was a joyful journey with astonishing views on the Carpathian Mountains. We've learned about local village life and had a yummy traditional lunch at a local restaurant. I loved visiting Alba Iulia - cultural heritage left by Romans. I would recommend Get a Cluj Tour to anyone coming to Romania as a tourist or to anyone considering moving to Cluj.Written 5 December 2019
- OlgaJ82020 contributionsMore than just sightseeingGet a Cluj Tour provided us a tour on just a 12 h notice, which we were truly happy about. Our guide Joseph is an extremely knowledgable and passionate person who knows Cluj and its history in-depth. When he figured we are of Jewish descent he has kindly re-routed our tour and shown us synagogues, the Jewish community, Jewish cemetery, a kosher restaurant and many other places we wouldn't be able to find on our own. We would also recommend Joseph as a Relocation Consultant. When we told him about our plans to move to Cluj including the concerns about how and where to live/shop/eat/walk/seek medical and veterinary (for our dog) care, he was so kind and drove us around the different neighborhoods. He explained the differences between living in the different parts of Cluj and advised on the best options meeting our criteria. He was able to give detailed answers to all the abovementioned questions, thus proving us a clear picture of how living in Cluj would be like. Joseph exceeded all our expectations but that was on day 1. Day 2 see under Turda salt mine, Rimetea village & Alba Iulia (1 day, from Cluj) review.Written 5 December 2019
- yehudaveshomron0 contributionsPerfect dayOur tour guide Geta picked us up from our hotel in Cluj and we were the only people who booked that day, so it was a private tour! Geta is a superb guide, very knowledgeable, personable and made us feel very welcome and comfortable. She was fully familiar with all the history of Turda Mines and the picturesque Rimatea Village . We finished with a hike in Turda Gorge where Geta hikes regularly, which is very beautiful in Autumn. She also accomodated a couple of special requests, the synagogue in Turda and the Holocaust memorial in Cluj. Highly recommendWritten 12 November 2019
- lozvenus240 contributionsExcellent Tour!I did this tour with my friend back in July 2019. It was our first time in Cluj, Romania. The tour was ment to be for 8 or more people, but as my friend and I were the only ones who had booked on this particular day we had a tour with just the two of us and the guide, Joseph. Joseph had great knowledge and went above and beyond to share this with us. He even provided us with rain coats as it started raining on our hike through the gorge. He picked us up from our accommodation and returned us there aswell. Excellent day trip from Cluj and would highly recommend it to anyone who is visiting Romania. An absolutely beautiful country!Written 1 November 2019
- apytka0 contributionsPhenomenal ExperienceWe had an amazing time! Our guide, Geta was knowledgeable and friendly and just generally made this trip completely worth it. She picked us up exactly at 8:30 right outside of our hostel and we were on the road — our first stop was the Turda Salt Mines, which are absolutely spectacular. The history is fascinating and the sheer size and brilliance of the place is awe-inspiring. It looks like something out of a science fiction novel. We had some free time to ride the ferris wheel and look at souvenirs, but unfortunately the row boat area was closed. After the mines we had a lovely lunch at a restaurant nearby where we talked about Romanian/Hungarian history and food and sipped local wine. The next stop was Turda Gorge — there's a zipline option (an extra 50 lei a person) which was quite the thrill — from there we hiked through the gorge and our guide explained the geology and showed us some native plants and then guided us up to a view from a fortified cave. The gorge is spectacularly beautiful but be warned, sensible footwear for a hike is important as the going is quite slippery. Rimatea was the last stop — it's a quiet little village a bit of a ways away from Turda and so picturesque. We heard some more history and had a walk around the town before heading back to Cluj. Without a doubt worth every penny.Written 22 October 2019
- Marchje0 contributionsGreatest tour!We had an absolutely amazing day! Especially the Alba Lulia is so worth the visit! Exellent guide with enormous knowledge of the history of Transylvania and very well organised trip. We had all the time we wanted in each location and felt safe and well taken care of the whole day!. It has given us a much broader knowledge of Romania and the whole trips was worth every dollar spend. Only small thing you might want to be aware of (and that has nothing to do with the tour) is that what is advertised by the Salt Mine as an underground amusement park... is at best a recreational area with bit of table tennis, billiard and a very slow Ferris wheel. On the other hand we loved the scenery on all of the day and all the great information about places visited and history told by our most competent guide.Written 16 October 2019

Interesting experience to have if you pass near Turda.
The natural part of the mine is really very beautiful, it's a shame that they wanted to fill the place with tourist attractions and recreational activities that have little to do with the surrounding environment.
The part of the lake is very nice, where it is possible to sail by renting small rowing boats, at 30 Lei for 20 minutes
It was worth it, especially for the initial impact of the salt chasm seen from above

We had a great time at the Turda salt mines! My 7yo absolutely loved it and our guide explained everything so knowledgeably and patiently. We didn't have any Romanian Lei on us so she helped us with cash for the attractions at the mines. Highly recommend!

A must for every trip to Transylvania, which in itself is a must for anyone who has not been there, is the disused Turda Salt Mine, a first-class attraction. It is advisable not to "take" this visit with you on the way to other destinations, but to plan it as a day trip from Cluj. The amazement at the method of former salt production will be as great as the admiration of the museum presentation.

A huge underground space with a lake, and a Ferris wheel, there are also playgrounds; croquet, tennis. A good place for a selfie. This is a "place of strength". After an hour and a half stay in the salt mine, you can freely climb the stairs of 14 floors.

We had a great time here as two adults. There’s a lake which is further down than the other attractions which you can get a row boat out on, this is definitely a different experience and something I’d recommend.
We went on the Ferris wheel and had a go at the crazy golf. They’ve tried to keep it as authentic as possible whilst putting these attractions in which adds to the grand feeling of the place.
It would be a great place for the kids once they’re 4ish and can be trusted not to completely wander off (as there are stairways that it would be easy to disappear through if your eyes weren’t on them the whole time) as there’s lots to do, and areas where adults can sit whilst the kids amuse themselves at the golf, bowling and playground like area.
There’s a little stall down there selling souvenirs and market type stalls outside the place selling a greater range of general Cluj & Romania souvenirs.
I’m really pleased we decided to visit here for a few hours as it was definitely something different to experience and I’d recommend it to anyone who hasn’t been there before!

We visited mid-week, it wasn’t too busy. It’s amazing to see and very large inside. You can take the lift the 13 floors down or use the stairs if your feeling energetic. The walls are stunning the way they’ve been cut out. The lake is lovely to go for a row on on and relax. It’s hard to put into the words the beauty inside.

Picked up from the hotel by Gita and given a history Estonia on the way to Turda. The mine is easily navigated but Gita gave it the edge with her depth of knowledge. The mine itself was beyond mind blowing with the sheer size of it housing a ferris wheel, golf course, table tennis tables and playground. Lifts and stairs available floor to ceiling. Consider Gita as a guide, she was superb from start to finish.

Very pleasant visit, Tudor is an excellent guide, we were lucky enough to have only two for this visit and it is all the more pleasant. We were able to visit the mines, the monastery and the best being the hike, certainly physical but very enjoyable! A big thanks to him !

Unique and definitely worth a visit. It is difficult to put into words the uniqueness of this place, especially its grand space when you take the lift down. I also enjoyed learning the history of the mine which is linked to the history of Romania. Do go there if you can.

I didn't know what to expect from the tour, mainly because I didn't think salt mines would be that interesting. Yet, many online reviews seemed to have recommended it, so I decided to give it a shot. Was originally planning on taking public transportation but figured I also wanted a guide to explain things, so picked this tour.
I had Joseph as my guide, who was SO knowledgeable and kind, catering to all my needs. Also very on time regarding pick up, which is always commendable. Tour itself is quite flexible, in terms of how much time you want to stay in the mines. Would definitely recommend to anyone in Cluj!

Husband has mobility issues would this tour be suitable?
Written 16 August 2019
Hello, stairs are unavoidable in order to get to the elevator. If you enter through the old entrance (Strada Salinelor), you'll have 43 steps on the stairs, and about 720 meters of walking through a gallery. If you enter through the new entrance (Aleea Durgau) you'll have 150 steps on stairs and about 250 meters of walking through the gallery. Sorry our answer comes so late.

Do I get picked up and dropped off from hotel in Bucharest with this trip?
Written 28 July 2019
Hello,
This tour is operated from Cluj. Salina Turda is about 425 km away from Bucharest. If you are in Bucharest and plan to visit the salt mine, we can also pick you up there, but keep in mind the driving would take some 8 to 10 hours, depending on the traffic. That's why we would suggest a 2 or 3 days long trip from Bucharest to Salina Turda / Cluj, so that to discover a little bit more of the country, including some of the most beautiful medieval cities of Transylvania, UNESCO enlisted fortified churches, charming villages or some of the most astonishing Byzantine style churches in Romania.

Hello, if you don't feel comfortable with heights, that might affect the quality of your experience on at least one instance. When you enter into the salt mine taking the new entrance, there is a stairway going obliquely downwards for slightly over 100 steps. If getting down such a stairway is problematic for you, there is a way of avoiding all this by taking the old entrance - we would walk for 1200 meters more on both ways, but we'd only walk on a flat and horizontally going gallery.
Once inside the mine, there is only one instance in which is not possible avoiding seeing a huge space opening just a meter away from your feet: entering the trapezoidal hall (Rudolf mine) is only possible from above and in order to get to the elevator we'll have to walk for about 5 meters on a balcony dug in the salt wall on the top part of the mine.
The elevator which will take us to the bottom of Rudolf hall has a transparent wall on the mine's. But in the elevator you could eventually turn your back to the mine side, in order to avoid seeing the void.
All other instances which might be problematic if you don't feel comfortable with heights can be avoided without affecting too much the quality of your visit.

How far away is from the city center?
Is there public transportation reaching the mine?
Is it open at weekend?
Written 13 April 2019
Turda salt mine is 34 km away from Cluj city center. There are several buses a day from Cluj to Turda and you can take them at the main bus terminal in Cluj, which is situated just behind Cluj train station. Each one of these buses can let you somewhere in downtown Turda. There you should look for local bus no 17 which can take you to the salt mine. The mine is opened all year long, with very few holiday exceptions.
In order to avoid all the havoc and hustle & bustles of bus finding and bus changing as well as to let you have not only a pleasant experience of the mine, but also an informative and insightful visit, we can pick you up from your hotel in Cluj, drive you to the mine in a comfortable car, guide you through the mine and explain everything you'll see and answer all your questions. You can get all these services for just 166.55 lei / person (the entry ticket to the salt mine is included into this fare).
