The Hermitage is considered to have been founded in 1764, when Empress Catherine the Great acquired an impressive collection of works from the Berlin merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky. The collection of the State Hermitage includes over 3 million works of art and world culture artefacts. It contains paintings, graphic works, sculptures, works of applied art, archaeological artifacts and numismatic objects.

Skips the main line, but still expect a large line at this "skip the line" entry. Get here early, and it will move a lot faster. Still a better option than lining up in the general entry line.

Much better to get a ticket ahead of the visit and avoid the groups of tourist. Some rooms are quieter and more enjoyable. The collection is wast, so come prepared and discover and don’t compare it to the Louvre.

Hello, It is not necessary to book ahead for the Hermitage but advisable as queues can be 2 hours in length. Book online if you can. Cheers Ray Roberts
