About
A town in a town, a state within a state. Explore the largest island in St. Petersburg, a home to a crazy mix of sailors, industrial workers, academics, artists and students. Probably, the best area for local eats too. Key features: 1920’s semi-defunct Soviet factory, University area, one of the finest embankments in town with its imperial palaces and exotic monuments, Academy of Fine Arts, the narrowest street in St. Pete’s, German quarter, St. Andrew’s church, local market, students’ hangouts.

I had done the bus and boat tours so seen all the major sights when I joined Vera for the walking tour on a beautiful late summer Sunday morning. I was the only one who showed up so Vera kindly suggested some "off the tourist trail" sights especially around Petrograd island. She speaks wonderful English, is very knowledgeable and shared some personal stories of what her family experienced during the siege. It was like a pleasant stroll with a good friend, engaging in entertaining and intelligent conversation. Highly recommended - Spaceba Vera!

After several days of walking, walking, walking - between museums and palaces, and inside them - it was a great relief to simply sit on a boat and enjoy the sights of St. Petersburg's canals and palaces as they passed by, accompanied by interesting commentary from our guide, Denis, in fluent English. Sunshine helped of course, not always in plentiful supply here (we had intermittent heavy showers for four of the five days we spent in St. P.) There were only four of us on board and we had plenty of room to sit on the loose chairs outside on the deck, but the tables and chairs in the cabin below did seem to be crammed in - I have no idea how people would squeeze into the small spaces if the boat were full. No on-board catering either - it wouldn't take much to provide basic tea & coffee facilities (a thermos flask, some cups and tea bags/coffee sachets would already make a difference, and some on-board basic nibbles would be very welcome!) As it is you have to make do with the coffee vending machine on the dock before boarding, or - even better - get some tasty Russian warm buns filled with cabbage/egg/meat from the snack shop across the road! The tour itself takes you through various canals and then emerges onto the wide Neva, and goes round the Peter and Paul Fortress island, before returning to the canals of the historic quarter. Excellent views of St. Petersburg landmarks.

We did this tour on a cloudy cool day and thoroughly enjoyed all 90 minutes of it.

St Petersburg has so very many beautiful buildings and more than 300 bridges connecting its 42 islands and the views from he boat were spectacular.

Mike, our guide and commentator was outstanding and the boat just fine
The English language tour costs more than the Russian tour at15 Euros a head but is longer.

St Petersburg has many Russian tourists so finding a boat tour in English, with a real guide and not an audio guide, is not easy. The price of 1000 RUB is more than the Russian tours (about 700) but worth it even without the English commentary since you get to go around the St Peters and St Pauls fortress island and the tour is thus 90 mins instead of 60 minutes.

The guide spoke clearly with only a faint accent and the content was interesting, if a little dry. It could have been better with a bit more energy and perhaps some witty anecdotes.

Volume was acceptable but in retrospect when she asked at the start "Can you hear me okay?" we should have asked for the volume to be turned up to hear her even better over the diesel engines.

If you found my review helpful, I would appreciate your vote.

We took the tour on a warm & sunny day in July and it was a very positive experience. Our guide, Vera, spoke flawless English and it was easy to follow through the loudspeakers (we were seated outside). Yes, when passing under the bridges the noise of the engines was multiplied and our beautiful guide would have been difficult to hear, but she simply & smartly kept quiet during those moments. The tour itself was well planned and included also a part where we went around st Peter's and Paul's island.

This is a 90 minute canal and river cruise where you are able to view many of the sites from the comfort of a canal boat. Blankets are provided if the weather is cool. We had Vera as our guide. She provided well understood English commentary about many of the outstanding monuments, museums, gardens etc. The boat goes in close to the island of the Peter and Paul Fortress, under many bridges and provided lots of photo opportunities. We had a trainee guide sitting behind us who was very helpful in answering questions for us. The tour is 1100 roubles, slightly cheaper for students.
