I have never been to a cooking class whilst travelling, however after attending this class I will be trying to find them the next time I am on holidays.
The hosts were friendly and spoke English very well. They demonstrated each dish in the bento box before we made them, ensuring that we succeeded along the way! They also offered to take pictures with our phones of us cooking.
At the end of the class we were able to enjoy our freshly made bento boxes for lunch! We also received a card with the recipes so now we can try them when we get home!
I would highly recommend this if you enjoy Japanese cuisine and are interested in how it is made. Good for individuals or groups

This was so good!! Tasted amazing and we learnt so much about Japanese cooking. We were 8 people age 18-64 and everybody enjoyed it so much! One vegetarian and that was no problem either. The ladies who held the class were so kind and great teachers!

We had a really great time preparing bento. Our teacher was very patient and knowledgable. A good range of different Japanese cooking techniques and tips to use at home. Don’t eat a big breakfast though as you prepare a lot of food!

Cooking Sun was very accommodating when we wanted to make a last minute switch from the market tour class to the bento box class, and we had a fantastic time. The bento box class is great as you get a chance to try a number of Japanese cooking techniques (tempura, rolled omelet, etc.). The variety of items within one class seemed fairly unique vs. other cooking schools. Our instructors (Maya and Keiko) were really friendly and more than happy to answer questions about the cooking as well as Japanese culture.

I am not a cook and as I’m just retired I thought maybe I’d better learn something new. The teacher has lovely English and is very patient.

She taught us so much in the 3 hours we were there and I was able to eat everything for lunch - I was very full.

The recipes are so good and the results are delicious. The teacher is very informative. I am now able to understand some of the basics about Japanese cooking. For example I didn’t know light soy sauce doesn’t colour the egg roll and is more salty than dark soy sauce!

I highly recommend this as a great way to spend a few hours. The kitchen is well equipped and a lovely atmosphere, with no washing up!

We spent 3 great hours in the Bento class, thanks to the Cooking Sun team who perfectly explained in English all the recipes, cooking techniques, products used, etc. Their team was composed of 3 people to take care of our group of 8, and they were all very available to answer our questions!
During the class, you learn to cook lots of different dishes (that you can easily do at home), and you get to enjoy the meal with all the participants. Then you leave the class with both paper and electronic versions of the recipes.
We really loved it and it was one of the best memories of our trip in Japan.
In summary, great class with a great team, so don’t hesitate to join one!

When we decided to go to Japan on our family holiday we asked the kids what they wanted to see and do. Our 9 year old son asked to visit all things Pokémon and our 7 year old daughter asked if we could learn to cook some Japanese food - mainly sushi.
We found and booked the bento box class at Cooking Sun via Cookly. We were excited as the audio was a 2 minute walk from our hotel however as soon as the class was confirmed we were informed that we would be at a different location, closer to the markets.
Yuka was our chef and teacher and expertly taught/showed/helped us make miso soup, rolled egg, sushi, gommae, teriyaki chicken and tempura. Our son is vegetarian and there was no problem to cater for him with a few changes of ingredients.
We all loved the class and enjoyed the food that we made. We learnt some interesting facts about the food and culture and Kyoto itself. Would highly recommend this class!

We did the class in Kyoto. The place was easy to find with google maps and pretty central.
Nice little building, well laid out and comfortable.
There were two ladies doing the teaching ( Coco and another lady who’s name I forget - sorry!!). Both were very friendly, polite, encouraging and overall knowledgeable about Japanese food. Their english was also excellent- the best I’ve come across in our trip in Japan.
What a fun and interesting way to spend the morning!
We made our own Bento box for lunch. Sushi, tempura prawn and veg, teriyaki chicken and sesame spinach. The end product then become our lunch. I was amazed how tasty it was given my lack of cooking skills 😂
I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to experience something a bit different from seeing yet another temple!
