What to expect
Take a deep dive into Japan’s culinary traditions as you learn to prepare home dishes which are not too familiar to you but are popular at home or casual restaurants in Japan. During your course, you’ll have the chance to learn preparations of typical izakaya favorites from a master chef before trying your hand at making (and eating) some of your own. Start your izakaya cooking experience at 2pm at the designated cooking studio located in beautiful traditional wood house in Kyoto, the location of which will be provided at the time of booking. Begin your izakaya session with an introduction to the history and origins of this lesser-known Japanese culinary tradition. Many historians believe the origin of izakaya dates back to 18th century when rice had been taxed to brew sake. The culture of izakaya evolved in Edo era when sake bottle shop started to serve dishes as well as sake to promote their sake. Now, izakaya is often used as a venue to have small parties at a reasonable budget throughout Japan from young adult to elderly. Continue your cooking lesson with an introduction from your chef to the ingredients and techniques that define the izakaya tradition. After following along with the instructions and demo from your English-speaking chef, grab your knife as you try your hand at making some authentic Japanese home dishes of your own. Learn how to make dashi, the typical Japanese soup stock, before learning to prepare a variety of dishes. Some typical izakaya favorites include spinach with sesame sauce, teriyaki yellowtail, vegetable chowder, mushroom tempura and rice with vegetables. Please note that your class menu may vary from the above, as the dishes are adjusted based on the availability of seasonal ingredients. Finish your izakaya cooking session by sitting down with the other participants to enjoy your dishes for dinner. Leave your session with the recipes so you can prepare them for friends and family in the future. Click on View Additional Info for cooking studio location.

Cooking with Chef Chiaki is a highlight of our Kyoto stay!
Mar 2020
My husband and I wanted to not just eat good Japanese food, but learn the skills to recreated them at home and this class delivered on this promise and more. We realized that the food we made in this class, though not as beautifully crafted as the Michelin star restaurants due to our lack of "shaping" skills, it tasted just as great.

Chef Chiaki speaks fluent english, is incredibly personable and patient, and we enjoyed every moment of the class with her. I would highly recommend asking to see if she is available to teach if you have the option to do so.

Living in the bay area, we can source all the ingredients easily, so we're definitely going to be making again what we learned and explore more internet recipes.

Cooking a Traditional Izakaya Meal
I had so much fun at Cooking Sun Izakaya class! We made 6 different dishes including dessert using traditional Japanese ingredients and seasonings. Our chefs spoke very good English and were engaging and easy to follow.
The space is very clean and everything is convenient and easy to access.
Recipes are easy to replicate and are very diverse: from something I would cook for a party appetizer to a plate that can be an easy meal on a weekday. I think cooking is a great way to learn about local culture and customs - this class was no exception.
Definitely recommend if you have some time in Kyoto.
Thank you!

A great class!
Jan 2020
I did the afternoon class and loved it. The delicious dishes we prepared are remarkably simple to put together, and you get a hardcopy of the recipes to take with you. Note that you make a substantial amount of food and eat it in three rounds. I would encourage you not to eat a big lunch before coming here, because you will be too full to eat everything that you make!

Cooking in Kyoto
My 11 year old daughter and myself joined this cooking class- it was wonderful. Learnt a lot about Japanese ingredients. We cooked many dishes and all of the recipes will be able to be cooked easily at home in Australia. A thoroughly enjoyable experience. Thanks Cooking Sun.

Great intro to Japanese cuisine
We LOVED our izakaya cooking class with Cooking Sun. We arrived a bit late (chose to walk from Gion, bit of a hike) and it was no issue for the hosts, they settled us right in and were so lovely throughout. The whole experience felt so authentic, they really want us to use these recipes again! We enjoyed all the food, especially the variation of sauces that are so easy and we can definitely make on our own. I didn’t partake in the sake but my husband did and we were definitely advised of the small extra fee for that so it was completely our choice. This was such a great way to break up the temple and garden sightseeing in Kyoto! Would do it again in a heartbeat.

Very fun and learned a lot
Dec 2019
I did the Izakaya Cooking class earlier this month. It was fantastic. We really cooked a lot of dishes, and I learned about the basics of Japanese cuisine. It was all very tasty and I have some recipes to try at home. The instructor was very patient (even when I had to re-chop some veggies I had chopped wrong) and kept things moving along. Lotus root is my new favorite vegetable!

Such a fun experience!
Dec 2019 • Family
We loved our cooking class at Cooking Sun! Our instructors made the experience really fun and easy with great tips and a relaxed environment! The two things I wish we could have done was eat throughout ( they had breaks built in when we would eat the food we prepared, but we would cook something and they would set it aside and it about killed me to see my food getting cold while I drooled!) secondly I wanted to have sake while we cooked! They did offer us sake at the end, but I cook when I drink!! Haha! But the kids (10&14) loved it and overall it was a great experience!

Loved the experience.
There were two instructors that were both friendly. One was very much more organized and prepared than the other.

Lots of delicious and easy recipes. Would definitely do again.

Note: The saki that is offered to adults at the end is not included, though they don't tell you that until you leave.

Overall, well worth the experience.

Great experience
Nov 2019 • Couples
This was awesome! We were given the recipes shortly after arriving so we could check them out while everyone was washing and getting aprons on. We got to keep them too. There was 6 of us total and we shared grills between every two people. We did everything together with great explanations and examples. Our hosts were so nice and informative. All the food tasted great and they cater to dietary restrictions too. We loved this class.
